  1. I think his CS% will go up as well, as the mullet creates more lift, so he won't be able to get under the tag as often. Good call. Bill James talked about this in his 1988 version of the Historical Abstract. Strangely he edited it out in the 2001 re-release.
  2. The shaggy effect increased Johnny Damon's production in terms of OPS, although his stolen base rate decline a bit. That's probably due to increase wind resistance. Hopefully by bringing back the mullet Braun will enjoy the same increase in OPS, but maintain his stolen base rate since the mullet is more aerodynamic than the full Jesus look.
  3. You could say this about any player, no matter their skill level, and be right at least 98% of the time.
  4. I will never boo the guy. In all my years of watching baseball, I've seen very few players who play as hard or get as much enjoyment out of the game as Prince. I guess a few years back he got a little surly about a contract renewal, but otherwise this guy is a joy to watch. He's a special player at the plate, a very smart hitter. He's not a great defensive player, but it's not because he's lazy or stupid, or doesn't care; it's due to his own physical limitations. Watching him leg out that triple yesterday just made me laugh. The guy is the heart and soul of this generation of Brewers. Despite what La Russa says about how the game should be played, this is one of the most fun teams to watch in the game today, or maybe in generations. Prince has had a lot to do with that. I know he won't be back, and it's probably not in the organization's best interest to try and bring him back, but more than any other person in the last decade he's made Brewer baseball fun and relevant. No matter what happens next, Brewer fans should always honor this legacy.
  5. From here:http://danagonistes.blogs...04/wisdom-of-weaver.html "Earl Weaver's Second Law: If you don't make any promises to your players you won't have to break them Weaver mentions that ideally he wouldn't have to talk to any of his players all season. He also notes that players, for example relief pitchers, who have to be told what their "role" is just don't get it. When asked such a question he would often retort "Your role is to warmup when I tell you and come in the game and pitch when I tell you." "
  6. I don't think he's as bad as the rest of you do, but he's certainly not much more than serviceable. Prince does play hard every minute of every game, and while not fast, he is good base runner for his size.
  7. Me too. How many times in the course of a season does any reliever pitch a random inning and not give up a run. The Brewers pen pitched 4-2/3rds scoreless innings last night. Axford clearly doesn't have his control down right now. So why make the team suffer by keeping him the closer? The Twins pulled Nathan out of the role. Let's win a few games, and in the meantime put Ax in low pressure situations while he works on his control.
  8. Braun has completely, unbelievably stunk up the joint in LF this year. Still, a bad left fielder won't (shouldn't) cost you as many runs as a bad SS. That's the crux of the argument here. A bad SS can cost you more runs than just about any other position. You're right, of course. And Braun more than makes up for it with his bat. Still, I've two horrible throws to the plate from him in the last week, the over shoulder bobble-"i've got it...I ain't got it", etc. In the same regard, Prince has made two horrible throws to the plate, in what, the last 2 (3?) games? Yuni may be terrible, and it's at a crucial defensive position, but a lot of the rest of the defense is similarly awful. A lot of the mistakes I'm seeing seem like stuff that should be correctable through better effort and experience. The problem is, this team isn't inexperienced anymore. They should be making better decisions. I'm not seeing any progress in this area.
  9. Well, that was an awesome catch/double play last night. Sure, it was mostly luck, but still it was awesome. Just watching the games so far this year, it's looks to me like Ryan Braun is much worse in LF than Yuni is at ss.
  10. His minor league career whip is 1.481. His MiL walk rate is 6 per 9. He's a hard thrower who has control issues. I think he can continue to be an effective reliever for years to come, but I have my doubts on him as a career closer.
  11. This from wikipedia, referenced to a 2009 radio interview in Pittsburgh: "Morgan occasionally refers to himself as Tony Plush, which he states is his "name on the field" [16]"[/sup]
  12. If this stuff annoys you, don't ever go to a La Crosse Loggers game. It's really annoying there.
  13. Punto is the very definition of a replacement level player. If you are going to go with someone like him you might as well just have handed the job to Luis Cruz. I'm not convinced either would add much different value than Betancourt, as both look like huge holes in the lineup to me.
  14. I expect Baltimore, Cubs, possibly the Nats, to put serious offers for Prince. Other possibles, depending on their finances, Florida, Dodgers, or Arizona.
  15. I guess I totally missed the real purpose of Almonte. I thought the point of him being on the 25 man was because he could play some infield. So he'd be the 6th IF/6OF on the team. So far he's only being used as the RH RF'er, not as an IF'er. Since Ron doesn't consider him viable in the IF, Counsell can seldom start at ss because he's the only backup IF'er in case of injury to a starter. If Almonte isn't going to play the IF, then when Hart comes back both he and Nieves should be shipped out and a 6IF brought up. Where's Iribarren or Heether when you need them?
  16. Didn't they release Carlos Silva at the end of Spring Training? maybe they can get him back since they are paying him 80 kajillion dollars.
  17. I think it was Narveson that Kranitz talked about the other day on the radio pregrame broadcast. He said in the past Narveson wouldn't throw his changeup early in the game. But Kranitz wants his starters to come out throwing their best stuff and get ahead of hitters right away to start the game. His first start Narveson was throwing changeups in the first inning. This strategy makes sense to me. Start the game with your best stuff, get the outs while you can and see how the game progresses.
  18. Bingo. If Wolf were making Narveson money there would be no complaints. Of course, in fairness, if Wolf were making Narveson money he wouldn't necessarily be assured of a rotation spot.
  19. Biggest rivalry for the Brewers; first game of the year against the Cubs. And Wisconsin baseball fans outside of Milwaukee will not be able to watch the game.
  20. I don't think it's on DirecTV for the second time this year when WMLW is carrying the game. This just stinks. I know there are some Bucks fans on this board, but trust me, outside of the Milwaukee and perhaps Madison areas, most of the rest of the state could not care less about the Bucks. I don't understand why DirecTV is not picking up the WMLW games this year. If it's on MLB Network it will be blacked out in Wisconsin because FSN holds the rights to the game. They just choose not to air it. A Spring Training game on MLB was blacked out a few weeks ago. Like people in Wisconsin are going to hop in their car and drive to Arizona if the game is blacked out. So, to review, if it's on MLB it's blacked out. But if it were on WGN everyone in the country with cable would be able to watch it. But if you try to watch the Cubs feed on the free preview of Extra Innings tonight, it will be blacked out. However, if you turn to Extra Innings mix channel it will probably appear in one of the little windows and you'll be able to highlight it and even listen to announcers. MLB is stoopid. I blame Bud Selig.
  21. Manny was always one of my favorite players. He was a great hitter, so I'm sorry to see he was cheating. He was never the sharpest tool in the shed, so I guess if someone was going to be stupid enough to get twice, it's not surprising it was him.
  22. Atlanta feed is available on DirecTV, but of course if you live in Wi, it's blacked out. I guess you're supposed to watch the Brewer feed, but you can't because DirecTV isn't picking up the feed. I hate baseball's blackout rules. Bud Selig trying his best to limit fanbase.
  23. Well it sucks to be 0-4 to start the season, but Sunday's game was really the only one they didn't have a legit chance to win. The bats need to wake up. I think the rotation and bullpen will be all right.
  24. OK, it's 4 games into the season and time to recognize that although bunting seems like the right way to play the game, it just creates and an easy out and doesn't increase the chance of scoring.
