  1. His career OPS is .727, which isn't bad for a guy who's mostly played ss and 2B. Is it possible they are going to call up Green, or maybe Gamel, and need Lopez in AAA for depth?
  2. Now you know that's not going to happen. Not with this manager. btw, If Counsell or Wilson are going to play everyday at 2nd then they should have called up Boggs or some other bat and left Ferris in AAA.
  3. I'm with you. Ferris doesn't affect the 40 man and is a weekend solution until a deal for a major league infielder can be completed. I'm not saying I agree with Doug on this one, but it's clear when he says "we're going for it", he's not going to try upgrading positions by bringing up rookies. He seems convinced he needs veteran grittiness to improve the infield.
  4. I fully expect Jackson to pitch like the BrewCrew version of CC Sabathia and Dotel like Brian Wilson. Because that's what happens when average talent is acquired by the Cardinals. Cardinals see this division is up for grabs and they've gambled a bit of their future to win this year. They won't miss Rasmus much if Jay keeps hitting like this. It's a good trade for the Cardinals in the short term.....unfortunately.
  5. Wow, Kaline is a good comparison, at least through age 27 or so. But I think Kaline deserves much more credit than "a solid guy who never led the league in much or won an MVP". Kaline was probably one of the 5 or 10 best hitters of his generation. Eddie Murray through age 27 season had a 142 career *OPS+. Braun's career number is currently 143. He's remembered now as somewhat of a steady, very good, not great player. But the 80's were somewhat of a pitcher's ERA and Eddie was arguably the most feared hitter in the AL for the balance of the decade. Although he never won an MVP, he received more votes during that stretch than any player in either league. There's no shame in Braun being remembered as similar to either of these players, when he hangs up his cleats.
  6. Well, Prince's OPS was over 1.000 just 8 games ago. He just needs top get out of his little slump.
  7. I've always thought this is because secretly FOX thinks baseball is boring, so they look for interest and drama by showing the fans.
  8. Looking at the fangraphs screen shots, I hate the Twins angle. It's like you're in a cheap bleacher seat high up and far away in CF.
  9. The Packers and NFL are great fun once a week during the season and playoffs, but otherwise it just doesn't hold any interest for me. Like a friend said the other day, football is more fun to watch, baseball more fun to talk about. (Frankly I'm not so sure about the "more fun to watch" part, but I understand football makes for exciting TV for casual fans.)
  10. Wait a minute, what about this? Link, please! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  11. Well, he has a 4 game hitting streak going and heading home, where he's riding a .929 OPS this year. We can hope the hot streak has already begun!
  12. YuniB did hit .284 during the arbitrary time period of June. Had a .409 slugging during that period too, (and a .281 obp--how does that happen?) Now he's been hot again for the last week or so. But as his obp indicates, even during hot streaks he's still a swing at every pitch type hitter. Most players like that will occasionally go through hot streaks where he gets lucky and the ball falls between fielders. That happens for every player, even those named McGehee. It's what happens when he isn't lucky that makes the difference between a bad player and a good one. Good players are still able to contribute during slumps by drawing walks and playing good defense. Yuni can't do that.
  13. I think it's clear the organization would rather acquire a mediocre veteran from another team than plug Green in at 3rd this year. In fact, if Gamel really has been playing 3rd since his demotion, it's more likely he's the second option if they can't find a slob from another team. Gamel either makes the team next Opening Day or will be out of the organization. So, perhaps they'd rather move him up in a couple weeks and get him some regular major league at bats. Then they'll take a long look at Green next Spring.
  14. I think he's just seeing the ball crazy good this season and taking advantage of the pitches he's getting. His career ba/obp is .289/.347, so it's not like he's some YuniB type hacker.
  15. Earl Weaver's Second Law: If you don't make any promises to your players you won't have to break themHis response to relief pitchers, who questioned their role: "Your role is to warmup when I tell you and come in the game and pitch when I tell you."
  16. Their offense isn't very good, but their pitching has been excellent.
  17. I agree if a change is necessary, then the sensible order puts Morgan 1st, Hart 2nd. If Braun is out I'd rather see Rickie 3rd and Kotsay 5th. In the end it probably doesn't matter all that much, as long as your 5 best hitters are in the 5 top spots.
  18. If Axford is to remain the closer than I would rather see K-Rod used for the most critical situation in the game, whether that's the 6,7,or 8th inning.
  19. Machado just turned 19 a couple weeks ago. He's probably two years at least from the majors. By that time they could move Hardy to 3rd, or if he continues to play well and stay healthy, he won't be too expensive to trade. In the end it's probably not a bad move for the Orioles. They are really short on major league caliber players, so the 3 year deal helps solve that issue.
  20. They really don't. They have 4-5 well rated pitching prospects and tried to plug them all into the rotation this year: Matusz, Britton, Arrieta, Tillman, Bergeson, Patton. Patton and Bergeson have failed. Tillman can't throw strikes in the majors, Matusz and Britton were recently sent back to the minors, though both look to be very good. Arrieta has been all right, but struggles with command as well. The rest of the minors is completely bereft of talent. Andy MacPhail is overrated at GM. I'm surprised Hardy would sign on with the Orioles. This team is at least 2 more years away from producing a winning record.
  21. MacFail will hold out for too much on Hardy and the deadline will pass with him still an Oriole. In the offseason he will sign with Seattle or the Mets or the Braves.
  22. A small market team often can't afford a star or even an average player at every position or role. I'm guessing Doug felt they could carry Gomez as the every day CF'er and live with his poor offense, while enjoying the excellent speed and defense he brought to the game. Hopefully he'd improve a bit with the bat. But when he had to give up Alcides and agree to take YuniB in order to get Greinke it became clearer they'd need more production from CF.
  23. I don't know. The HR Derby is one thing (it's basically just an exhibition for charity), but I think most of the players do care about playing in the All-Star Game itself.I think they appreciate the honor and are generally respectful of the game. But I doubt they care that much about who wins and after a couple at bats or an inning or two are thinking about the flight home and getting Wednesday off. After being selected for a couple years it's fairly evident a lot of players are bored with the entire debacle, judging from the number of veterans who drop out each year with various aches and pains. I calling you out, Derek Jeter.
  24. I'm concerned Marcum isn't 100% healthy. Probably nothing he can't pitch through, but maybe they are trying to give him an extra few days off so he stays strong through the summer.
  25. The whole All Star Break is tedious to me. 3 days in the middle of summer without real baseball or major league games that matter. I just don't care. It's pretty clear the players don't either, although they appear to have a good time.
