  1. I think Sandberg will be the next Cubs manager.
  2. Well, good luck to him if he's offered and takes the job. There is no shortage in this world of young, eager play by play announcers who would love to have a job with a major league baseball club. Especially one that won 96 games and their division, going deep into the playoffs. It's fine by me if the Brewers are a springboard to a bigger market for a broadcaster. If Cory leaves there will be tremendous demand for his job, as Ueck will probably be on the air for a only a couple more years.
  3. Salary cap won't work in baseball. Team by team revenues are too disparate.
  4. He's like Jim Thome, just a decent, normal guy. Did you catch the post game interview on Fox? He was pretty humble and took the time to compliment the pitcher on his game tying hit in the 10th. I like this quote too:
  5. Refresh my memory, what happened? Did he see an opening in the organization after Jeffress left and seize the opportunity? I have no problem going through arby with Parra and giving him a long look in Spring Training. He's been effective at times out of the bullpen, and even as a starter lo, those many years ago. If he's healthy he'll make the team.
  6. I agree. From what I've seen in the past, it seems skin color often plays a role in how these stories play out. Maybe you disagree.
  7. Well, I assumed Edwin Jackson is African-American. I see he was born in Germany and went to high school in Georgia. So, maybe he's an Army brat? Arthur Rhodes was born in Texas. There aren't a lot of African- Americans in MLB anymore. Not compared to the 1970's and 1980's. Since the arrival of Hall, Weeks, Prince, the Brewers have had an unusual number of black players on their roster compared to other teams. It has been a prominent part of their identity. The typical starting lineup for this year's playoff featured 4 African Americans, Prince, Weeks, Nyjer, and Hairston. My point is not who Chris Carpenter was swearing at. It's that Morgan is labeled a bad guy and Carpenter a "tough competitor". Why is such a big deal that Morgan is swearing at Carpenter or talking it up with Giants' fans, but when Carpenter is caught cursing on the field, national media "pundits' run to their twitter accounts to defend the guy? White players tend to get a pass more readily than African Americans.
  8. I don't understand the point you are trying to make.
  9. gregmag1 hit the nail on the head. I don't believe it's an overt racism. It has more to do with a predominately white media and fan base that more easily identifies with players of the same background and ethnicity. That's why a Brewer team with a lot of vocal, fun-loving African-Americans in recent years, is often seen a "not playing the game the right way", or showing up the other team. When white players do fist pumps, mob each other after game winning hits, scream and curse on the field, it's because they are fierce competitors.
  10. Oswalt, if healthy, looks to still be a damn fine pitcher. Will he sign for a two year with a 3year option? Where's C. J. Wilson going to end up?
  11. Nyjer is African American and Carpenter is a white, born again Christian. But we aren't a racist country.
  12. The Brewers were down 4-0 in the top of the 1st due to poor outfield play by Kotsay and Hart. The pitching was good enough to win that game for the Crew. Games 5 & 6 were equally poor defensive games which they buried themselves early. Better defense and the Brewers win at least one of those 3 games. The Cards offense is very good, The Brewer rotation was disappointing, but it was Brewer defense that kept the series from going to game 7.
  13. On what exactly? If you had three years remaining, sure. But he's off the books in 2013. The Brewers really shouldn't have salary issues next year with the money for Fielder, Yuni and Hawkins already coming off. And its not like $9m on a one year deal will really add much to teh Brewers who really don't have that many holes to fill (given 1B is a big hole but not one where $9m in 2012 will make a difference). A lot of the comments posted previous to mine revolved around next year's budget and that with raises the payroll in 2012 will be about the same, so there isn't much flexibility. My point is, if you think the Brewers need to enter the free agent market to replace Prince or get an upgrade at SS or 3B, then trading Wolf is quickest, most efficient way to payroll flexibility. I don't necessarily agree with that but unless Mark A intends to substantially increase the payroll from 2011, then trading Wolf makes some sense. I think the team will be just fine with Gamel at 1B, Green at 3rd and some kind of upgrade at SS to start the year. Then at the deadline in July they can look to expand payroll if they are in the hunt. I don't see much value in trade for Narveson. He's basically a LH Dave Bush and is of more use on the team than in a trade that wouldn't bring much more than a low level prospet in return.
  14. Trading Wolf will free up some real money. He'll probably regress a bit next and is in his final year. I'm not sure there is a big difference between and average Randy Wolf season at age 35 and Chris Narveson. Wolf next + 2013 option is $11 million. He's done a fine job for the Brewers but it seems that money can be better spent next year.
  15. I doubt they keep both Hairston and McGehee, especially since McGehee is about to get a big raise in arbitration. Hairston will be a more useful player and see a lot of regular ABs backing up Green. I want to see Gamel at 1B. Maybe they (gulp) bring back Kotsay as backup 1B/OF? I will not be surprised when YuniB has his option picked up.
  16. You might want to look into that remedial math class... I think the runs/win can differ year to year. I think Fangraphs had it at ~9.4 this year. So that is really 17.5 wins, or about 90% of the difference in those teams. Oops. typo on my part. Fixed it. Thanks for making the argument stronger!
  17. The 2010 pitching staff gave up 804 runs. The 2011 staff, 638. That's a difference of 166 runs! If you follow the guideline that 10 runs=1win, then the difference in runs from 2010 to 2011 is equal to 16.6 wins. So, yeah, I'd say the addition of Greinke and Marcum + improved bullpen + slightly better seasons by Yo, Wolf, and Narveson, do account for the additional 19 wins.
  18. Manny Ramirez' original 8 year deal with Boston worked for the length of the contract. At least from the perspective he was still hitting at a top level in all 8 seasons. I'd have to go back and check, but depending on how you look at it, Arod certainly played HOF caliber during the 10 years of his original 10 contract with Texas. Jeter and Rivera maintained their level of play for their multi year deals.
  19. I don't think this is intrinsically true. There are worse hitters in the NL since there is no DH, but I doubt see what factors about the NL game mean there is weaker pitching.
  20. I wish he would accept arbitration and we could this one more year. Only with Taylor Green at 3rd and a different ss.
  21. It won't matter who starts if the defense keeps playing like a tee ball team.
  22. Yeah, I'm getting tired of daily posts that Rickie has been worthless this series. As I felt obligated to post twice yesterday, Rickie was bad in the NLDS, but he's been his good old normal self in the NLCS. If you don't see that then you must not be watching the games or studying the box scores. He has 4 hits in 15 ab's, 2 runs scored, 2 rbi's, a homer and a double. .846 OPS. And I agree with chadomac he was hitting the ball hard last night. This is about what you can expect from Weeks in a typical 4 games series.
  23. As posted before, Weeks had a crappy ALDS, but he's been pretty much Rickie Weeks in this series.
  24. Weeks is 3 for 11 with a walk in this series. He has 2 runs, 2 rbis, a homer and a double against the Cardinals. His OPS is .970. Yes he was terrible against the DBacks, but to say he's "failed to get a bit hit in the 5 hole" just hasn't been true in this series.
  25. Agreed. I know a lot of Cub fans. While we like to give each other a hard time during the season, I'm usually willing to cheer for a friend's team in the playoffs if "my" team is out of it. Unless that team is the Yankees or a Favre led Vikings team.
