  1. But just think how much he'd be worth after a big year at the plate a la Nelson Cruz. I like the return based on his present value but as with segura and Rogers before him were in solid positions to improve their stock while minimum risk at lowering it. As has been payed out elsewhere there was no rush to trade any of them. and while I am excited about adding a top 100 prospect I have an anxious feeling that stearns is going to make one trade too many
  2. I've seen this before listed in the discussion forums, but not sure if anyone ever posted this here. you've probably already considered it, but just wanted to throw out there in case you haven't - about have a "like" or "heart" or "thumb up" option for each post, maybe located at the bottom of their post next to "quote" and "reply". I have no idea the feasibility of something like this, but would definitely appreciate and utilize that option. many times I am sitting nodding my head in avid agreement to something with no way to affirm the poster or add extra weight to the idea without having to add an additional post that is redundant to the discussion or just say, "great post", because that is awkward at times to the flow of the board- and I'd be doing it all the time. I think a thumb down option could also work, but don't like its negative connotation which could be used to bully or create anxiety, discouraging someone from posting, which I think goes against the atmosphere that this board aims to create.
  3. I like the idea of creating a new wing on brewerfan for WI sports- and a subforum for each one. I think that would be well frequented. I just came across LL.com for the first time in January after trying to find a similar, knowledgeable, respectful approach to the packers as I get here at bf. I was delighted to find it and see its relation to this site, as during the season- I would have had lots of comments/content to contribute. however, was equally dismayed to find such few posters. it would be nice to just have everything right here, personally. but, will start to add traffic to Lambeauleap in the mean time and see what happens.
  4. yes- whatever it is that keeps this forum alive and vibrant I am all for. whether it is continuing as is or merging another site- whatever, but this forum is something I value deeply and check often. There are lots of sites to receive brewer info, articles, and interviews. However, there is NOWHERE that provides this respectful, knowledgeable, data driven argument based, insightful, welcoming, fun, and engaging forum for discussions. Especially surrounding the minor leagues and great linked resources like alumni trackers, transactions, link reports, and the community prospect list. although I have only started posting regularly in the past year, I've been here since the ESPN forum days (if some remembers that) and can credit Brewerfan for satiating my brewer obsession with endless hours of procrastination and providing a community of people who affirm my (dare I say) more comprehensive understanding and perspective of the brewer organization than others I talk brewers with who are more concerned with how many "Ribbys" braun knocked in last night mentality.
  5. one guy you can take out of that crowded mix at AAA is unfortunately, Brooks Hall. had a disappointing year as he fell out of the rotation in Huntsville. as he'll be entering his age 26 season he would have to have a huge preseason to break camp in the AAA rotation. and with a crowded bullpen to boot, he is most likely the odd man out. in assuming pena and jones make the MLB bullpen, all of these guys will be looking for a roster spot as well: Jaye Chapman Jim Miller Junior Guerra David Goforth Cesar Jimenez Yhonathan Barrios Austin Ross Jacob Barnes Damien Magnifico Mitchell Lambson Nick Hagadone Chris Capuano Tim Dillard Pat Misch Jed Bradley Drew Gagnon
  6. A+ and up look like solid roster projections. but, I think A ball and R+ will look a lot different than you have. first of all, often times they platoon starters, so although not all may "start" perhaps 8 pitchers might be regularly throwing 4-5 innings per outing. with that said, not sure Rodriguez and Benoit would be starting in Aball after subpar seasons in the DSL as 20+ year olds. Luna would be a very aggressive move, in spite of his impressive DSL numbers- I expect him down in Arizona. I think Miguel Diaz will be in full season ball to give him more innings after missing all of last year. I also think you might see Daniel Missaki and Christian Trent starting in Appleton and even Yamamoto- despite his horrid numbers so far, he's got great stuff. Victor Diaz might even end up in Brevard County in the bullpen. Also jon perrin would have had to have taken a major step back to start off in rookie ball as he held his own last season in Appleton- expect him to pitch in A+. Some notable guys you left off were some people picked up in trades, notably Trey Supak, Carlos Herrera, Freddy Peralta, and Missaki (mentioned above) who will factor into this picture. And over Nattino Diplan I'd put in Joan DeLa Cruz, who's coming off a season long injury. Hard to project- and who knows what guys take huge offseason leaps ie last year with Burkhalter, Earls, Woodruff that few outside of the organization anticipated. any way you look at it a lot of talent up and down the system.
  7. really like the trade. I think Villar will give us at least what Segura gave us the past 2 years and hope Hill plays well enough all over the field to be flipped at the deadline. and of course love the potential in Isan Diaz. and as people have stated Anderson for Wagner is a wash without the risk of wagner not making it at the major league level, which mitigates the low percentage risk that wagner exceeds his projected Anderson-level ceiling. in addition, potentially being another trade asset at some point in the near future. great trade all around from my vantage point. so what I also want to say, is not as a wet blanket but just to offer the other side of the token. first, I'll preface, as with Jason Rogers, segura netted more of a return than most thought the brewers would get. but, also like rogers there was no rush or immediate need to trade either of them. I still stand by that I predict a year of Rogers starting at 1B would have netted a much larger return as he already established a sturdy floor (good PH, reserve corner) that chances are he would not have lowered, but could have exceedingly increased. same with Segura- his floor is what he has shown the last 2.5 years- which is still a starting SS, even if slightly below average. however, he is still only 25! by no means has he hit his prime, and is still talented enough, like a Gomez or myriad others to reach it. he may never reach it, but the chance of one more year or even a half of year to show his stuff and net a much larger return is worth the risk of him continuing what he's done the last couple years, as there is still trade value in what he has produced. one more thing, re:Diaz: Hurricane Iribarren's rookie minor league season, where he hit a combined 1.106 OPS at short season and A-Ball (age 20), says hello.
  8. ok, good call on the clause. @brewcrewball- hold the press!
  9. Quick @brewcrewball write up an article about how the Brewers should trade the now expendable Guerrero because of the Kendrick signing! He'd be right in the same undervalued asset pickups as others stearns has targeted. Never really got a shot in la w still big upside.
  10. with this configuration, there's no real push to trade anyone (ie Davis/braun), unless you think their value is more now than it will be during the season or after. I think the real interesting thing will be spring training 2017 with young depth at OF and pitching. barring trades/injuries, which almost certainly will happen to the roster, you'll have all those guys at AAA, expectantly be fully ready for a MLB job. In addition, there is the potential for AA repeat guys Taylor and Roache to get brought up to AAA and be ready to compete in the MLB next year. All the more reason that if you aren't going to trade Braun, that he move to 1B next year to free up an OF spot. in 2017, if Braun moves to 1B and Khrush is traded, it would leave the OF in some configuration of Santana, Flores, Liriano, Phillips, Reed, Broxton. and one of the latter three will either have to stay in AAA or someone else will need to move. Love it- so many assets. and that's not even looking at all the young, controllable pitching. big pool to draw from.
  11. I always liked Peterson too, and I hope and think, given the opportunity, he'll sketch out a solid mlb career as a 4th OFer. however, low ceiling, adequate 4-5th OFs are plentiful, which is why opportunities are hard to come by. on the flip side, high ceiling athletes like Ramon Flores and Rymer Liriano are not. they have the upside potential to be solid starters for years to come, and are young and controllable assets. in the next two years, we have no need for quality PHers like shane Petersons or mark kotsays, we are auditioning for the team of our future, which hopefully a lot of these guys could be a part of. Here is the path that keeps our assets intact/in the organization, in my mind- barring future trade/injury: MLB OF: Santana, Braun, Davis, Liriano (no options left) & Niewenhuis (no options left) *60 Day DL: Ramon Flores- when he comes back- DFA/trade Niewenhuis AAA OF: Phillips, Reed, Broxton (don't burn service time and save an option year w/ them). Guez, Wren & Presley/Young on bench/dh AA OF: Taylor, Coulter, Roache, Young/Presley (taxi squad)
  12. well, as with most of our conversations, only time will tell.
  13. I know it would not happen due to ego/expectations etc, but is there any merit to the idea of Braun batting leadoff or even second?
  14. MKE81- don't worry, nobody here is questioning Phillip's seat as heir apparent to the CF position when he arrives. what I was wondering, was based purely on defensive ability, who is best out there. maybe its him, but I've read very positive scouting reports on several others on the list as well, but do not know enough about defensive metrics or scouting to position one against the other. we could very well, list out the top 10 defensive CFs for the entire organization to include Harrison, Garcia, Davis, etc, which would be fun to see too, but I was just interested in comparing the top level guys at the moment.
  15. yes, most definitely with trades and draft picks, this list will look much different personnel-wise, and hopefully, much much stronger. I was meaning, when I said "what you see now" as to mean "as is". mainly, I liked the think-list we did a couple months ago on "biggest leap" http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=33476. people had interesting insight on who they think will take a leap forward and who might be positioned to take a step back. for me, a top 25 list just puts some helpful context around it as I look at my prospect lists for the upcoming year. you bring up an interesting point though about park factors affecting prospect status. as for a hypothetical struggle of any pitching prospect at AAA, I think it most certainly affects their prospect status in the eyes of at least "outside the organization" pundits. management often times are looking for certain things in a player's development that are not privy to the public and not necessarily tied to numbers. we've heard it before that a pitcher may be restricted to using only certain pitches, or told to just work on consistency in their mechanics. and then once they see it- are advanced even if the numbers aren't there. take Juingamnn in AAA last year. he was having a pretty rough go at it, but obviously they saw something in his development that they liked and promoted him to the show and he showed he deserved the callup and his high prospect ranking. now, had he continued in AAA at those numbers, I think many people would have dropped him considerably, and given his age and opportunities, perhaps out of their top 25. you mentioned coulter as another example, but Coulter's numbers (in large part due to Brevard) definitely hurt his prospect status this past season (except it seems on MLB pipeline lol). however, the other side of the coin is that, following a bad year at a bad park, there is also some leeway given that says, let's drop him a bit, but wait and see what he does away from that park at the next level before we drop him precipitously in our rankings, as I think is the case with Coulter, and affirmed by most of you, as stated well on reillymcshane's comment on our BF community list for coulter,
  16. below are 10 guys who can play center, currently in the system, who have a realistic shot at playing OF for the Brewers at some point in the next 2 years. I'm curious who you think is the best DEFENSIVE CFer among them. here's my rather uneducated ranking: 1) Tyrone Taylor 2) Alex Presley 3) Kirk Nieuwenhuis 4) Brett Phillips 5) Keon Broxton 6) Kyle Wren 7) Michael Reed 8) Ben Guez 9) Eric Young, Jr 10) Shane Peterson
  17. okay- let's say the 2016 season just finished and we're submitting our brewerfan community top 25 prospects...based on what you know now and see things trending- what's your top 25? Here's My Predictions (my current rank): 1 Orlando Arcia (1) 2 Brett Phillips (2) 3 Trenton Clark (3) 4 Cody Ponce (9) 5 Demi Orimoloye (13) 6 Michael Reed (22) 7 Kodi Medeiros (8) 8 Gilbert Lara (7) 9 Josh Hader (6) 10 Tyrone Taylor (11) 11 Jorge Lopez (5) 12 Clint Coulter (14) 13 Devin Williams (16) 14 Nathan Kirby (12) 15 Monte Harrison (10) 16 Marcos Diplan (17) 17 Yhonathan Barrios (34) 18 Ramon Flores* (20) 19 Keon Broxton (39) 20 Jacob Gatewood (19) 21 Adrian Houser (21) 22 Damien Magnifico (35) 23 Victor Roache (23) 24 Miguel Diaz (49) 25 Garrett Cooper (45) In addition, I think... * Flores will play in the majors at some point this season, but he'll retain his "prospect" status for our list purposes. * Reed is going to put up some power numbers this year that will make people take some serious notice of his all around game. have you seen those muscle pics of him floatin around? damn. and in Col. Springs? * lopez & hader will struggle a bit in Colorado * Ponce is going to dominate Brev. Co and get a promotion to AA * Lara is going to play stateside at some point and show why he's the 3 million dollar man * Orimoloye is going to make teams kick themselves for not drafting him first chance they had * whether repeating the season in AA or starting in AAA, Taylor will regain his elite prospect status with a solid year at the plate * Barrios is just getting better and better with more pitching experience...even in colorado * Notable guys taking big jumps into my top 50 - Tyrone Perry, Jay Feliciano, Nathan Orf, Jon Olczak, Malik Collymore
  18. Rizzo? you got to be kidding me? he's been someone I've rooted for since he put up incredible numbers in the DSL when he was 17. there must be more to this story. how does someone who put up a 3.09 ERA / 1.12 WHIP as at 21 year old in A ball last year get released? in addition, out of all of our full season affiliates, Brevard County will seem to have the least pitcher crunch. was he injured? did they not like the projectability of his stuff. were there behavioral issues? personal issues?
  19. For Pitching, I think Zach Jones makes the team at the expense of David Goforth/Junior Guerra/Jaye Chapman. STARTERS Jimmy Nelson Wily Peralta Matt Garza Taylor Jungmann Zach Davies RELIEVERS Jeremy Jeffress Michael Blazek* Will Smith+* Corey Knebel Tyler Thornburg* Ariel Pena* Zach Jones And in general- I believe that Garza, Lucroy, and one of Segura/Gennett will be traded by the trade deadline this year. * EDIT- Segura in fact traded- so, i'd slide Chase Anderson in for Zach Davies...that is until Garza is gone...
  20. Assuming this is our roster entering the season. however, i'll add that once Ramon Flores is healthy- I'd have him take Shane Peterson's spot on the 25 man. VS RHP CF Kirk Nieuwenhuis+ C Jonathan LuCroy RF Ryan Braun LF Khris Davis 1B Chris Carter 3B Garin Cecchini+ 2B Scooter Gennett+ SS Jean Segura BENCH OF Domingo Santana C Martin Maldonado UI Jonathan Villar~ 2B/3B Colin Walsh~ OF/1B Shane Peterson+ ------------------------------------- VS LHP SS Jean Segura C Jonathan LuCroy RF Ryan Braun CF Domingo Santana LF Khris Davis 1B Chris Carter 3B Jonathan Villar~ 2B Colin Walsh~ BENCH 2B Scooter Gennett+ OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis+ C Martin Maldonado OF/1B Shane Peterson+ 3B/1B Garin Cecchini+ *EDIT- with the recent pickup of Rymer Liriano. I'd have him take Share Peterson's spot obviously, but when Ramon Flores is healthy I'd trade/waive, Nieuwenhuis. *EDIT #2- with the recent pickup of Aaron Hill and departure of Segura- I'll slide Villar into starting at SS and Hill starting at 3B. I would also prefer to have Cecchini start in AAA, and in place have Perez or Middlebrooks at 3B, but not sure who I would risk taking off the 40 man over either of those two. *EDIT #3 - after the Davis trade, I would move Santana to starting in RF and batting 3rd, Braun back to left, batting cleanup, to separate KOs from Carter/Santana. Then, with the extra 40 man spot, I'd add Perez as a utility IF allowing me to send down Cecchini for extra development in AAA and probably add Guez to the 40 man in place of Wilkins (hopefully slide through waivers) to be the 5th OF/PH, allowing Reed, Phillips, Broxton to stay in AAA for fine-tuning.
  21. apparently the Angels are looking for an affordable upgrade in LF. http://baseball.realgm.com/wiretap/44444/Angels-Seeking-Upgrade-In-Left-Field-But-Options-Limited as previously stated, I would be hesitant to trade Davis at this point, as I think he has room to increase his trade value this season and it won't be for another season before we'll have a logjam in the OF. however, depending on what they have to give- could be a good move- Davis fits the bill for what they're looking for.
  22. Squeezing in- if lucroy and Maldonado are not traded and we haven't brought anyone else in to play 1B and the Brewers are unwilling to risk passing pinto through waivers...could he play the weakside platoon at 1B? ....okay, that was a lot of if's...answered my own question- not going to get to that point.
  23. thank you, exactly what I was looking for. and of course it's on this website- lol- another reason why the brewerfan website is the best.
  24. Does anyone know of a resource that lists "options" remaining for players? it would be nice to look at the 40 man roster and see that listed next to each players name or something.
  25. there have been recent reports previously linked of the Brewers looking for additional starting pitcher depth, saying the competition for the last two rotation spots are between Jungmann, Davies, Pena with Wagner, Lopez, Hader, Houser, Cravy on the outside looking in. However, nowhere have I heard mentioned the possibility of Blazek, Thornburg, or Smith moving back to the rotation. As far as people know are the Brewers not considering them at all for the rotation this spring- and if so, why? I'd think all three of them have good potential there and would be better options then at least Wagner or Cravy.
