  1. This is just a curiousity thing, but has anyone ever tried a pitch-out on the first pitch in this situation? This is assuming that it's a slow runner, maybe someone like Adam Dunn or something, and he's putting much less effort into the "steal" than normal.
  2. Is it that hard to get guys a day off that we have to have multiple players sitting the same day?
  3. I understand Brian's point, but it doesn't make sense to me why they don't bother to keep the runner on. Does the pitcher lose that much if he's throwing from the stretch? And normally if the 1st basemen is holding the runner he at least is able to get into some kind of position before the ball has a chance of being hit. One more question regarding this: Even if the pitcher doesn't throw from the stretch and the 1st basemen is off the bag, what kind of jump is the runner really getting? I haven't payed close enough attention to that part, but I sometimes wonder if the runner isn't lollygaggin it to 2nd assuming there won't be a throw. I tend to agree that it would be nice to see someone try to throw them out and end the game rather than dink around with defensive indifference.
  4. This really drives it home I think. We've been calling for a bullpen upgrade all year long, and look what's happened. Dessens goes on the DL, and we get Spurling. Maybe it didn't happen exactly like that, but looking at the bottom line, we upgraded our last bullpen arm. Gallardo gets called up, and since Cappy came back, Cappy 2 got traded, and Gallardo stayed, this immediately upgrades the pen. I think the Brewers have done a better job than most teams at systematically improving their bullpen.
  5. Basically the same response that's been given here...he's the 25th man on the roster, and given that status I think he's done fairly well. I'm not the biggest fan of Spurling, and I think that at some point there may be better options out there, but for right now he's doing fairly well in a mop-up role. I don't want this to turn into a Yost-bashing thread, so please bear with me because I really do like Yost...but there have been a couple times where I just questioned why Spurling was sent in in the first place. If I recall, in the Royals game we called him in the 11th inning of a game that had been moving very slowly. I also think Villanueva hadn't pitched in 3 or 4 days (I could very well be wrong on that), but really I don't understand why you wouldn't bring in a highly-successful long man when you're not sure how many innings you'll have to go. As for Parra, I really like him and I think/hope that he'll be able to contribute at the major league level sometime relatively soon, but relatively soon probably isn't after such a short stint at Nashville. Calling for Parra over Spurling, in all respect, seems to be a bit of a knee-jerk reaction based on Parra's perfect game and Spurling giving up a couple games that in my opinion he shouldn't have pitched in the first place.
  6. Anybody planning on purchasing some bleacher seats or standing on the walkway in right-center? I'll be in the LF bleachers as part of my 4-pack for the saturday game. 10 rows up above the restaurant...not much of a chance in left field, but my brother and i are prepared...one of us doing the roundhouse kick and the other catching it. I would love to say that I would do mean things with the ball and get back at Bonds or whatever, but I gotta be realistic...I'm all for retiring at 25 http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Just remembered, I checked about a week ago and the entire outfield for that series is sold out for the most part. I may have missed something though. Apparently the rest of Brewer nation and the surrounding areas have been watching Bonds and planning ahead.
  7. Unfortunately I don't have any answers, but I've been wondering the same thing for most of the season. His name used to be all over the place, and suddenly disappeared this year. Maybe the HR Derby goose egg had some sort of mental effect on him...roughly equivalent of Pujols/Lidge http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  8. Brian Shouse-(C-)- He hasn't been quite as good as he was last year. Needs to buckle down on the first batter more. That would be good, considering the first batter is usually the only one he's in there to get http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  9. Offense - AB -- Bit of inconsistency, but that's to be expected...and some of those numbers are unlike anything we've seen in a long time Defense - CD -- Very inconsistent, Billy has come a long way, as has Braun...Jenks and hart have made some spectacular plays. unfortunately Hardy has had more botches than i expected of him, and Weeks seems to be struggling yet Pitching - B -- The entire rotation has been impressive at one time or another, Vargas has been more than anyone expected, Sheets has been a true ace since early april...Bush is hit or miss (no pun intended), and while i hope Suppan comes around, he's struggled a lot lately Bullpen - A -- I may be alone in this, but this bullpen has done so much more than what was expected of them...without Villy, this group still gets a B, but having a long man like that makes this a sure A in my mind Management - BC -- If it was only game management, this would probably be more along the lines of a D, but they've done a great job preparing a lot of young kids, and an even better job with some older veterans that want playing time. The job Yost has done keeping Mench and Jenkins in line and still producing deserves an A by itself. Overall - AB -- Really I'd just like to see the defense get more solid as the year goes on, and possibly some better in-game decisions by Yost...but all in all I'm obviously not gonna complain about anything. If Hardy boots a grounder but then knocks a two run shot the next inning, I'm happy.
  10. After seeing the stat that was shown earlier on FSN, I almost feel like if the Brewers start struggling in August or something I kinda want someone to no-hit 'em again so they can go on another tear
  11. Speaking of bullpens, ours looks so pretty with Capellan gone. Marquis has plenty of experience being the whipping boy, so i could see it happening again. I feel kinda bad for him though if that ends up being the case. He probably thought those days were over when he went to the Cubs and wasn't the 5-6 starter.
  12. I think Dessens is already healthy, honestly. I kinda wondered this from the start. Maybe they just didn't want to embarrass an old veteran when they realized he was worthless. As for Cappellan, good riddance. I didn't feel right rooting for him when he got called up. Some part of me wanted him to shelled every time out (but the Crew would manage to win yet, of course). I kinda like the return they got. He's a bit old for low A ball, but he's a lefty and he's still only 23, regardless of where he is. Plus he's got some decent numbers. He may turn out to be nothing, and all we did was get rid of a possible clubhouse distraction. I'll take it, gladly. Or, after a few years we could have a 25-26 year old lefty long man in the pen. I don't have my hopes up, but DM seems to know more about these things than me.
  13. I'd have to say Brewizard wins with Tony Danza based solely on aesthetic appeal...especially looking up and to the left. Brilliant. But for real, the Jai Rodriquez picture creeped me out...I don't wanna see Ryan in any pictures like that.
  14. I will gladly take a leadoff error
  15. The I-94 Rivalry...part of me feels like i've heard that before, and part of me feels like Vasgersian just coined a new phrase...anyone? i just woke up so my brain isn't fully functional yet
  16. I think it was an anti-Matt Millen thing, probably angry for drafting so many wide receivers. Yeah, that worked well. Millen is still there and they drafted a wide receiver.
  17. I'm buying a Villy t-shirt and that's all there is to it. I second this
  18. So how is Alex Gordon feeling about now?
  19. As much as i don't like what the outcome would be if that was a ground rule double, i gotta admit i see his point in arguing it
  20. I said at the beginning of the year that the happt jolly Sheets seems like a thing of the past That's probably exactly right. I think the "happy jolly Sheets" was necessary to mentally get him through losing seasons with a sub-3.00 ERA.
  21. I sense a lot a passion in that postgame interview with sheets...and i like it a lot. That's the guy I want leading them into the postseason (sorry if i'm getting too far ahead).
  22. atta boy benny...i think he was just so excited to have some run support, he just had to finish this one off
  23. Johnny First Pitch showing the wheels!
  24. Since this is about the silver lining, i figure there has to be a silver lining after being no-hit, besides the fact that this will hopefully wake up a few players and managers. Bill Hall- really impressed me tonight. He made a spectacular catch, and he drew 3 walks. I would think drawing three walks for a normal player in a normal game is pretty good and relatively uncommon, but for Hall this is very impressive. We know he has a problems with strikeouts, but he was seeing the ball well tonight (which is hard to do when the guy is throwing 100+ in the 9th). Add on to that the fact that every player coming up to bat probably had something in the back of their mind about breaking up the no-hitter; Hall has been the hero before, and no doubt enjoys the taste. But he was patient and just trying to get something started, even if it meant not being the hero. Okay, maybe "hero" is a bit much for the guy that breaks up a no-hitter, but you know what i mean hopefully. Jose Capellan- also impressed me tonight. I have to admit there was a dark side to me the first time he started warming up after being called up. I still wanted the Brewers to win, but the evil somewhere in the back of my mind was hoping he would get shelled...which he basically did. But tonight he looked relaxed and his pitches were tight, so hopefully he can keep that up cause it would be great having two good long relief guys in the pen. And I pray that he does, cause I don't think I can stomach Dessens anymore.
