  1. "Trade Rumors / Proposals" -- is there something they were missing about this title when they tried to blame bf.net? Honestly, anyone that tries to pass blame over here need only look at some of the other threads in the trade rumor forum. I love the fact that at this site, as opposed to some other forums, the rumor was swiftly and correctly moved immediately from the Major Leagues to Trade Rumors until there was reliable confirmation. So basically, the radio stations information came from rumors in a category that I believe also includes a thousand rumors about Carlos Lee last year, along with a few ideas of how we can get Manny Ramirez...hmmm
  2. Ohio is also home of another team in our division. I don't think we'll get much love from Ohio, Missouri, Pennsylvania, or Texas to a certain degree. Not because they think that the Cubs will overtake us, but because they have their own teams in our division that would love to see the Brewers get into a wicked slump. Seems like we're assuming here that the voters are watching the Cubs as the team to jump into first place, but if I was a fan in St. Louis, I wouldn't mind seeing the Brewers drop a pile of games in a row...and couldn't care less about about the Cubs.
  3. Something about having a 40 hr guy possibly hitting behind Fielder has me on the edge of my seat right now...
  4. I think we're assuming hypothetical here. For position players, I would probably start with Hart, then Fielder. I'm tempted to say Braun, but only if he continues to hit at this unconscious pace for the rest of the year and his defense stays solid. Hypothetically, if Gallardo stays relatively healthy i wouldn't mind having him around for awhile. But I think my #1 pitcher that I would love to have for 10+ years is Villy. He's versatile (can be starter or reliever), he's young (23 i believe), and his pitches aren't the kind that will drop off with age. If he relied on a mid-90's fastball, I might be a little worried, but he's got a high 80's fastball and still gets a lot of k's with that sick (circle?) change.
  5. Possibly the same guy that traded for Jason Kendall?
  6. I'm not a big fan of Joe Torre...never really have been. That said, I think he has to have the most difficult job in baseball, possibly outside the home plate ump for Game 7 of the World Series. The guy is given a team full of past-their-prime overpaid all-stars and basically told that with this team, he damn well better win. For years it seemed like Torre was praised for his ability to keep huge egos in check, and it would seem that's all he has to do to win. But Sheffield is nothing like Jeter or A-rod or Clemens or Randy Johnson. If there was controversy stirring around those guys, it was usually more media-based, and had less to do with the actual reactions of the players. Shef strikes me as one of those players that realizes that the camera hasn't been on him for awhile, so he better do something about it, and what better way than to play the race card. I don't know, maybe my opinions on Sheffield are biased based on the grudge that I most likely still hold against him, but all of this just sounds wrong. I'm sure Torre calls out guys like Jeter in front of the rest of the team because it shows the other guys that he'll call out anyone at any time. Maybe A-rod gets a pass because he's called out enough by the fans so Torre lets it slide in the locker room. Torre could have a million reasons why he calls out certain players the way he does, and unless he uses "choice" words when calling them out, I see no reason to just decide that it's based on race. Edit: Pretty sure I said nothing about Strawberry's appearance, but I must have missed the original thread about Sheffield and I needed to get it out...sorry
  7. The problem with this entire idea is that ESPN then essentially controls what makes them "appealing". That disgusts me. How does Kobe Bryant even make this list? I can't say I really found his alleged rape and court case all that appealing. And as much as I loved watching MJ play, what exactly did he do off the court that "should" increase his appeal? He sold stuff, and made a lot of money doing it. What about the great athletes that are giving back to their communities? What about players that are fighting for social justice? The important thing now is the fashion designs from whatever Williams sister does that crap. ESPN has taken sports and gone Hollywood, and unfortunately it often feels like America is going along with it because they think ESPN is the only thing out there.
  8. I believe most of his info comes from Steinbrenner, the Schwab, and the magical fairy. I remember when he was pretending to be the Yankees GM during a mock interview. That stuff was priceless. I wish I could give examples, but I hear so little out of his mouth that makes sense. BBTN really needs Harold Reynolds back, in my opinion.
  9. "Hi my name is Alfonso Soriano and I like hitting and admiring my home runs. Oh and I like money" Now this guy...this is my kind of guy http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  10. UW-Oshkosh, just graduated this past may with a B.S. in Music and a B.S. in Religious Studies. I spent 7 long years for two degrees that have relatively no employment value http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I worked the first 4 1/2 years working as a manager at two different Pick 'n Save stores, and the last part as a teller at a credit union. I also taught a few music lessons here or there to brass students (I play trombone) and spent a year with a reggae band called Unity...the Band. Weird name, but they had a good sound, and helped pay the bills.
  11. And we unfortunately saw the result of all those fans that jumped on the Packers bandwagon in the mid-90's. The Packers have a 4-12 season, and suddenly they don't want to associate themselves with the Packers and especially not the "old man" Brett Favre. Fortunately for the Packers, they're sold out until the year 7,000 A.D. so it's not like they have to worry about getting fans in the stands. I guess I just have a problem with fans like this who jump in and throw their weight around in sports discussions. They want results NOW. If Favre throws an interception, dump him. If Cappy gives up a home run, dump him. When a fan's perception is based solely on winning, they don't understand the concept of a single loss. If a fan suffers through the losing seasons and has patience and continues to support the team no matter what, they better understand the value of each win and realize that each loss is not the end of the world.
  12. I had a friend who put a bunch of signs around his place telling him that he didn't need a cigarette, along with other inspirational things to show him why he didn't need a cigarette. Bottom line is that for awhile you're still gonna think about it...a lot. The mind plays plenty of tricks when you're going through withdrawals, so anything that reminds you that it's not necessary will help. As for me, I quit for about 4 months starting last summer, but eventually went back for reasons that I would rather not get into. Anyway, what I got from that was that it is indeed possible for me to quit, so when the times comes again, I know that I can do it http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  13. Hey, I can bench press more than 60 lbs. Maybe you should make me a mod so I can bring your averages up http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Edit: Seriously though, as one of the newer members on this site (and not trying to suck up to the mods), I very much appreciate the way things are run around here. Intelligent conversation is hard enough to find. Intelligent, civilized conversation about baseball in an online forum is even harder. Just wanted to thanks to everyone who keeps this site going and I hope that Ethan doesn't ban me because I wasn't on that girl's list in her last post http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  14. Add to that the fact that they're probably still holding out hope that their own team will win the division. I'm sure St. Louis doesn't think they're quite out of it yet to the point where they will concede the division.
  15. I enjoyed the 3rd base line when I had SRO tickets, and I imagine 1st base line is roughly similar. The cool thing about those tickets is that you can move around and get several different views of the game for a cheap price.
  16. DieHOFDie...his terminology and beef with Brewers19 sounds familiar, like from last night. That kid needs a role model.
  17. That's kinda what I thought. Thanks http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  18. I don't think anyone is necessarily picking on people because they don't care about the early 80's Brewers. I think it has more to do with people who didn't care about the early 80's Brewers during the early 80's (or they weren't alive or coherent), and now that the current team is doing well, they're talking about the older teams with an heir of knowledge that they don't normally have. For the record, I just turned 1 year old during the '82 World Series, so I can't say I remember anything about it (other than watching the reruns), but I also don't try to pretend like I'm knowledgeable about that era just to fit in.
  19. I'm just throwing this out there because I'm really not sure, but is there still really any significance to having a left-handed starter or two in the rotation? I understand their importance in getting left-handed hitters out of the bullpen, but with a starter having to through the entire lineup hopefully several times, it seems like it's really not that important. I only ask because if Cappy gets traded or gets sent to the pen, we would have a 5 man right-handed rotation (whether it's Villy or Gallardo). I honestly don't know if that means anything. Yost just seems to be the kind of manager that needs to have that lefty arm in his rotation no matter what, if only for a change of pace.
  20. There's almost a distinction that has to be made with all the new fans that are following the team this year. There are some new fans that are respectful enough to understand that they don't know much about the history of the team. I'm only 25, so I only have vague memories of Yount and Molitor, and I'm not about to speak with passion about the '82 Brewers cause frankly, I don't know much about them other than some of the players and some of their stats. Some fans just started watching the team this year, and I have no problem with this whatsoever because not all of them are gonna jump ship if the team starts losing again. I have one friend that just started watching this year, but he doesn't get all bent out of shape after a few losses because he talks to and listens to people that went through the years of losing and he understands that if you're gonna root for a team, you can't just cheer them on when they're winning. On the other hand, there are an unfortunate amount of fans that dress up in Brewers gear because it's become trendy, and they stick around only as long as the wins are there. I had a friend of a friend watching a game with us who was talking about how he booed Turnbow a couple weeks ago at a game because "Turnbow sucks". While I agree that Turnbow hasn't been all that we remember him to be this year, he was a huge part of the Brewers 1st non-losing season in over a decade a couple years ago. Though that doesn't mean he can't be critized, it at least means he shouldn't be booed. It almost hurt watching Cappy walk off the field last night to a bunch of booing fans...they just don't remember what he's meant to us in the past couple years because they weren't there. I fear for the year in the future when the Brewers aren't winning like they are this year. All I can think of is the MNF game against the Titans during the Packers 4-12 season when fans were walking out of Lambeau in droves. Those are the fans that only started watching when Favre came along and the team started winning every year. They don't know who the "Majik Man" and Brent "Fumble"wood are. Neither do many of these fans remember the Brewers as far back as Lyle Overbay. It's unfortunate, but hey, they're pumping money into the team so by all means I hope they continue...I have no problem with trendy fans helping us keep this infield togeher http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  21. Even in this scenario, it really wouldn't matter if it was Gross or Gwynn running to second. In most normal DP scenarios, the player running to second wouldn't matter because they'll be thrown out anyway. I guess you could make the argument that if they get there faster they have a better chance of breaking up the DP at second base. All I could think of when I saw Baker's comment was a team full of Juan Pierre's (shudder). Personally I've seen enough solo homers this year to convince me that I wouldn't mind having Estrada or Miller on first at any point.
  22. Personally I loved the Suppan signing and I think it will pay-off in ways that none of us will see. The guy has been around a long time, and has playoff experience. We have a bunch of pitchers that haven't been around a long time, and have no playoff experience. So basically we're paying a guy to eat up some innings, and do some coaching on the side. I'll take it.
  23. The idea behind the suspension almost seems like it has to be more about pay than performance. There's just too much gray area with pitchers. What would happen if the player involved were a spot starter or something of the like? For instance, in the early season the Brewers chose to give their rotation 5 games of rest (which sometimes meant 6 days), but if you don't have the luxury of having 5 starters that you can trust, you would skip that 5th starter and go right back to the top of the rotation. So if that 5th starter were to get suspended, the team probably wouldn't miss anything at all...other than possibly an extra long man out of the pen.
  24. How are the playoffs a long shot? Yes, Billy has been coming around lately, but keep in mind he really wasn't doing anything for the first two months...other than learning how to play CF. Either way, all of that was going on and we're still in first place. I find it hard to believe our lineup is in huge trouble just because Hall is out. We went on an early season tear WITHOUT Braun's absolutely disgusting .995 OPS, so I think this lineup can hold on for a month or two. Keep Dye, I wouldn't want him.
  25. Now this...this is brilliant, and I too would be more than happy with the result of this plan. If selling outright or auctioning, I have a feeling that ball will be worth well over $1 million. Didn't McGwire's 62nd go for something between $2-3 million? I would think #756 would be worth more than that, depending on the stategy used.
