Orem (Angels) 8 Helena 7 Box Score Helena fought back once in this game, but could not quite do it twice. Two Helena hitters led the way; Chris McFarland and Raul Mondesi Jr. McFarland started the game slow, but ended up 3-5 with a 2B. Mondesi Jr. finished 3-4 with a 2B. Unfortunately, both made outs on the base paths. Whoops. On the mound, three Helena pitchers made appearances. Ryan Gibbard started and was just alright. Damien Magnifico was next and his big FB could not lead him through this one. He gave up 5 runs while recording just 7 outs. Awesomely, 6 of those outs were K's. Michael Francisco finished the game in fine fashion with 5 scoreless outs. McFarland also made his 17th error on the season. That is not acceptable from a 2B and may have contributed to Chris not receiving an All-Star berth. Game Log I am sure there is some interesting stuff from this one. Check it out!

Brevard tops Clearwater, 2-1 08/25/2012 10:23 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/images/2012/08/25/na4zDmsP.jpg Manatees starting pitcher Brandon Williamson struck out a season-high seven batters in six innings of work as Brevard County defeated Clearwater 2-1 on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - Nick Shaw celebrated his 24th birthday in style as his two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth was ultimately the difference as the Brevard County Manatees defeated the Clearwater Threshers, 2-1 on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium. For the 'Tees, it was their league-leading 28th win in one-run games. Brevard starting pitcher Brandon Williamson (4-9, 5.73), who was roughed up for eight runs in two innings in his last start against Clearwater, hurled six scoreless frames. He allowed six hits and three walks, while striking out a season-high seven batters. The Manatees (31-30 second half, 60-69 overall) were held in check offensively as they were held hitless by Clearwater (32-28, 68-58) starter Austin Wright for 4.2 innings. Brevard was able to plate the first runs of the game in the sixth and it started with a lead-off single up the middle from Franklin Romero Jr. Romero Jr. came in for Reggie Keen in the second inning, after Keen was ejected for arguing balls and strikes. Shaw then worked a full count and then deposited Wright's 3-2 offering over the right field wall for his third homer of the season to give the 'Tees a 2-0 lead. Eric Arnett relieved Williamson in the seventh and allowed the first Threshers run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right field. With Arnett on the mound in the eighth, Clearwater threatened with two on and one out but he was able to get out of the jam as it remained a 2-1 game. Casey Medlen came on in the ninth looking for his second save in as many days. Carlos Alonso led off the inning with a single to put the tying run on and then moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt. Alonso then went to third on a ground out, but would be stranded there as Medlen fanned Edgar Duran to end the game and earn his 21st save. Brevard County will look for the sweep of Clearwater in the 'Tees regular season home finale on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Tommy Toledo (2-1, 5.71) will take the mound for the Manatees as he will be making his first starting since August 19, 2011 with Helena. In his last outing on Thursday, Toledo threw three scoreless innings of relief against Lakeland. Toledo starting is a somewhat big development. He arrived at FLA as a starter but because of injuries and youth, he could never crack their always strong rotation. With the velocity to get MLB hitters out and at least on workable 2nd pitch, it will be very interesting to see where this leads.

Brevard County 2 Clearwater (Phillies) 1 Box Score Another big win for the feisty flippered cows. Nick Shaw's 2-run bomb, just his 3rd, was all that Brandon Williamson and crew needed. Williamson was absolutely a beast in the biggest game of the season thus far for him. 6 IP 6 H 0 R 3 BB 7 K 2 WP and a HBP for Williamson. The ratio sat at 5:3 GO:FO. Eric Arnett was responsible for the only Clearwater run as he was a bit wild. Casey Medlen notched number 21 with a super clean 9th. Reggie Keen went down looking as the 1st batter of the game. He did not agree. After chirping through the rest of the 1st inning, he got the heave-ho on his way onto the field for the 2nd. Naturally, his replacement, Franklin Romero Jr. went 2-3 and was on base for Shaw's shot. John Dishon gunned down another runner at 2B. Game story posted ASAP. Game Log

Do you ever just sit there and pray to the baseball gods that Yaddy Rivera learns to work a count so that he can attack the pitches he can drive? He is basically putting up the same line he did in Helena last season.

The 2B they chose was Micah Johnson, a 9th rounder in 2012 out of Indiana, of the White Sox. .288/.374/.420 18 XBH's and 19 for 24 in SB's McFarland sits at .294/.349/.415 19 XBH's and 11 for 17 in SB's Going by the numbers, Johnson certainly squeaks by. Still, McFarland is almost 2 years younger, making his performance more impressive by far in my view. The 1B, Wade Hinkle of the Angels, should have been promoted a month ago Nick Ramirez style. 23 in a few weeks, Hinkle is obviously too advanced for the league (1.012 OPS 37:40 BB:K. Giacalone cannot come near that line.

That is a valid concern. One of those 'we will never truly know' conundrums.
-
I get what you are saying, but this has to be on Pena. I highly, highly doubt the Brewers made any significant changes with him. I see it as just a rough patch for now.

Ya, come on Ted-whatever can't you read a box score?!

Brewers fall to Grand Junction in 11 6 hours ago • Independent Record A masterful pitching performance from Taylor Wall wasn’t enough for the Helena Brewers Friday night, as they lost 3-2 in 11 innings against Grand Junction at Kindrick Legion Field. Wall scattered six hits over six innings, allowing only one run and leaving with a 2-1 lead. He struck out four and walked only one. Martin Viramontes (1-3) took the loss, pitching five innings in relief and giving up two runs, one unearned. Helena committed three errors on the night. Grand Junction took the lead for the first time when Jeremy McLeod came home on a single by Ashley Graeter in the top of the 11th. Michael Mason (3-0) pitched two innings of one-hit ball in relief to pick up the win for Grand Junction. McLeod led four Grand Junction players with multiple hits, finishing 3 for 5 with one run scored and a double. Designated hitter Paul Eshelman paced Helena’s offense by going 2 for 4 with a home run. Raul Mondesi Jr. and Ruben Ozuna also had two hits.

AZL Brewers 11 AZL Indians 4 Box Score One terrific offensive inning was all that was needed in this game. A 9-run 3rd inning basically put away the Indians. Edgardo Rivera (1-4 BB), Jose Sermo (2-3 2B 2 BB), Clint Coulter (2-4 BB), Renaldo Jenkins (2-5 SB) and Malcom Dowell (2-3 BB) were all on base multiple times. Deivi Mejia kicked in a 2B. On the mound, 2012 7th rounder David Otterman made a rehab start pitching a scoreless inning. I think everyone is interested to see what this young Canadian can do. Juan Francisco took the hill next and allowed just 1 ER in his 3 IP. Jonathon Armold was responsible for the next 9 outs, and despite some shoddy D, Armold escaped unscathed in the ER department. Ryan Fasano and Alex Lavandero finished the game with a scoreless inning each. 3 more PB's for Coulter. 22 on the season. This is not atypical of a young catcher, especially one who played baseball in the northwest. Remember, Coulter managed all of 42 AB's his SR season, so he played maybe 15 games? Now, if he does not make a tremendous jump for next season, then I will start to worry. Jonathan Lucroy is the shining example of what hard work can do for your defense. Grand Juntion (Rockies) 3 Helena 2 F/11 Box Score This one went into extras, but the Rocks scored right away in the 11th inning and then held the home team for another tough Helena loss. Taylor Wall started for Helena and he continued his admirable season. 6 IP 6 H 1 R 1 ER 1 BB 4 K 1 WP and a terrific 12:1 GO:FO for Wall. Martin Viramontes went the next 5 innings allowing 6 H 2 R 1 ER 5 BB and notching 6 K and a stellar 7:0 GO:FO ratio. He also committed an error, threw 2 wild pitches and intentionally walked David Dahl twice. With all the worm-burners, the infield was under tremendous pressure to make plays. FIELDING E: Rodriguez (20, fielding), McFarland (16, fielding), Viramontes (1, throw). PB: Quiles (7). DP: 2 (Rodriguez-McFarland-Giacalone 2). Pickoffs: Wall (Rodriguez, W at 1st base). Some good and bad in there. At the plate, lead-off hitter Raul Mondesi Jr. went 2-5 with a 2B. 8-hitter Ruben Ozuna went 2-4 as did Paul Eshleman who included a homer. Chris McFarland followed his best day as a pro with his worst day as a pro. 0-5, an error, and he was picked off of 3B in a crucial spot. Game Log

Minus Coultier? He's 1 for 2 with a BB and 2 RBI's. I'd like to see more power out of him, but I suspect the 6'3 220 pound former HS State Wrestling Champ will add the power. It's awesome to see him hit for some average and draw some walks though. Houle was in the box score before. Just look at the quote.

'Tees edge Threshers to end skid 08/24/2012 10:17 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/images/2012/08/24/OlMblohw.jpg Manatees starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann earned his 11th win of the season as Brevard County defeated the Clearwater Threshers, 5-4 on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees snapped a four-game losing streak by holding on to defeat the Clearwater Threshers, 5-4 on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium. The win by the 'Tees is just their fifth in 16 games against the Threshers. Clearwater opened the scoring up in the top of the second on a solo home run by Cameron Rupp off of 'Tees starter Taylor Jungmann (11-6, 3.65). Brevard would tie the game in the bottom of the third and it started with a two-out single by Reggie Keen. Then with Nick Shaw at the plate, Keen would steal second and third and then score on a single to center by Shaw. The Manatees (30-30 second half, 59-69 overall) added to their lead in the fourth thanks to a two-run homer by Cody Hawn, which was his second bomb in the last two games and 12th of the season. The Threshers (32-27, 68-57) though would come right back in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3. Peter Lavin led the inning off with a single and then Jim Murphy hit a ground-rule double to put runners on second and third with no outs. A wild pitch by Jungmann allowed Lavin to score and Murphy would score one batter later on a RBI groundout. Jungmann's night was finished after five innings as he allowed three runs on six hits, while walking three and fanning six. Brevard County would take the lead back once again in the bottom of the fifth and it started with back-to-back singles by Keen and Shaw to lead off the inning. Both would score three batters later on a two-out single to right by Shea Vucinich to make it a 5-3 game in favor of the 'Tees. The duo of Greg Holle and Alan Williams out of the bullpen held the Threshers scoreless in the sixth, seventh and eighth. Holle threw two shutout frames and struck out two, while Williams had one shutout inning of work. Clearwater would make things interesting in the top of the ninth against Brevard's closer Casey Medlen as they strung together three consecutive one-out hits and were able to cut the lead to 5-4. With runners on second and third, Anthony Hewitt hit a rocket on the ground to Mike Walker at third, who then threw out the tying run at home. Now with runners on first and third with two outs, Cameron Rupp stepped into the box and worked a 3-0 count on Medlen. Medlen though would come back with three straight strikes to end the game, Brevard's losing streak and earn his 20th save of the season. The Manatees were able to make up ground in the muddled North Division race as they are now 3.5 games behind both Dunedin and Lakeland for first place. Tampa is a half game back of first and Clearwater is one game behind. The series between Brevard County and Clearwater will continue on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. as Brandon Williamson (3-9, 6.15) will get the ball for the 'Tees. Southpaw Austin Wright (10-4, 3.42) will toe the rubber for the Threshers. Williamson needs to really perform. Box Score Nice win for BC keeping that last gasp of playoff air in their lungs. Taylor Jungmann started and was pecked for 3 runs in 5 IP. He did K 6 but the control failed him with 3 BB 1 WP 1 HBP. The relievers delivered Taylor with his 11th win by throwing 4 very solid innings. Greg Holle notched 2 scoreless and Alan Williams delivered the ball to Casey Medlen with a 2 run lead. Medlen limped through his save tonight, but he managed to make it work. Joey Paciorek (2-4) notched his 3rd straight multi-hit game. Reggie Keen had 2 hits and 2 steals. The steals led directly to a run for BC. Cody Hawn homered for the 2nd consecutive day giving him 12 now. Nick Shaw also had 2 hits. All singles except for the Hawn homer. Mike Walker has been struggling lately (.269 OPS over last 10). Game Log Clearwater Top of the 9th Pitching Change: Casey Medlen replaces Alan Williams. Edgar Duran flies out to center fielder Reggie Keen. Peter Lavin doubles (22) on a line drive to center fielder Reggie Keen. Jim Murphy singles on a line drive to left fielder Juan Sanchez. Peter Lavin to 3rd. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Drew Hillman replaces Jim Murphy. Christopher Duffy doubles (9) on a line drive to center fielder Reggie Keen. Peter Lavin scores. Drew Hillman to 3rd. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Carlos Alonso replaces Christopher Duffy. Anthony Hewitt reaches on a fielder's choice out, third baseman Mike Walker to catcher Joey Paciorek. Drew Hillman out at home. Carlos Alonso to 3rd. Cameron Rupp strikes out swinging.

A couple more guys to watch certainly are: OF Elvis Rubio: Although this recently turned 18 year old wore down as the season progressed, Elvis is definitely one to watch for next season. OPS by Month: June: .803 8 XBH 10:16 BB:K July: .644 4 XBH 13:16 BB:K August: .504 2 XBH 4:12 BB:K His .675 season OPS was just a few ticks above the league average (.667). OF Juan Ortiz: Here is a guy who turns 18 in September who just finished his 1st pro season. After cruising to a .790 OPS before the All-Star break, Ortiz crashed din the 2nd half to .508. Overall, his .660 season mark is just a few ticks below league average. OF Francisco Castillo Finally, the lone All-Star hitter (we are pretty sure of that at least), Castillo. He will turn 20 at the start of next season, but I fully expect he will be stateside next season. More of speed guy (30 SB 8 CS), Castillo still managed a league average OPS while keeping fairly productive all season (.662 pre, .675 post).

Caleb Gindl put up a .900 OPS July followed by a .750 OPS August. Sigh. My head tells me he is possibly stalling in AAA but I am not counting Gindl out for having a huge year next season. The offseason is a cruel beast for a player coming off of a sub-par year.
-
T.J. Mittelstaedt was a heck of a draft pick in the 44th round. This is a guy who started in the AZL as a 22 year old college guy. The success rate for guys like him are practically nil. Now, in his 1st taste of AA, he is sporting a mid-700's OPS. Starting in AA next year with eyes on a mid-season bump will put Mittelstaedt in pretty good position to at least see time in the big leagues at some point in his career. I think he could be a useful bench guy in the 2011 Mark Kotsay mold myself. That is a steal in the 44th. Great find by the Brewers and great work by T.J. especially.

AZL Brewers 3 AZL Rangers 2 Box Score The Brewers went head-to-head with the mighty Rangers tonight and snagged a sweet, sweet win. Austin Hall started and was pulled after 1 scoreless inning. Anthony Banda came in and promptly threw 5 fine innings against this ridiculous lineup. He allowed 4 H 2 R 1 ER 1 BB and 1 WP while notching 6 K. Joel Dicent was called on next for multi-inning relief work. He ended up throwing 3 spectacular innings striking out 4. Great game for the hurlers. At the plate, Clint Coulter went 1-3 with a BB. Dustin Houle hit a 2B and Taylor Smith-Brennan smacked a 3B. Renaldo Jenkins had a hit and a walk. All of that was enough tonight. Game Log Eight 1-2-3 frames in this one.

Grand Junction (Rockies) 12 Helena 6 Box Score Pretty much the only player worth mentioning in this spot is Chris McFarland. He had his best day as a pro with 3 XBH finishing 3-5 with 2 2B's and a HR, his team leading 5th. Raul Mondesi Jr. also hit his 5th HR, putting two 19 year old players atop the Helena leader board. But back to McFarland, he is now back to a .300 average and the extra base hits are starting to pour in with at least one in the last 5 games. This is a heck-of-a solid prospect to have near the back end of your organizational top-30. The Rockies first pick in the 2012 draft, David Dahl, destroyed Helena after a routine night off yesterday. XBH's galore and Hunter Pence comparisons should really excite Colorado fans. Dahl might just be the Pioneer League MVP. Preston Gainey and Michael Shaub pitched this one. Not much good to say here. Shaub in particular was rocked. Game Log Yeah, because you want to sift through this pile. FIELDING E: Gainey (1, throw), Hernandez, Yo (3, throw), Andrade (1, throw), Rodriguez (19, throw), Mondesi (6, fielding).

Manatees crushed by Flying Tigers 08/23/2012 11:17 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/images/2012/08/23/FGmEbzvc.jpg Brevard County starting pitcher Matt Miller struck out seven, but allowed four earned runs in five innings as the Manatees lost their fourth straight game on Thursday night. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees dropped their fourth game in a row and seventh consecutive to the Lakeland Flying Tigers by the score of 10-2 on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium. Manatees (29-30 second half, 58-69 overall) starting pitcher Matt Miller (1-2, 9.00) was touched up for five runs - four earned - on eight hits in five innings of work. He yielded eight hits and three walks, while striking out seven in his third start with Brevard County. Lakeland (33-25, 69-54) jumped on Miller and the 'Tees early as the scored three runs in the second off of three hits, two walks and a hit by pitch. Down 4-0, Brevard was able to cut Lakeland's lead in half in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a two-out, two-run home run by Cody Hawn, his 11th of the season. The Flying Tigers plated an insurance run in the fifth off of Miller to take a 5-2 lead, but were then shut down for the next three innings by Tommy Toledo. Toledo allowed just one hit and walked two in three scoreless innings of relief. Brevard County though was unable to cut into Lakeland's lead as they struck out 12 times on the night, went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Lakeland blew the game wide open in the top of the ninth as they roughed up Thomas Keeling for five runs on four hits and three walks, to take a 10-2 lead. Jason Rogers and Joey Paciorek accounted for five of Brevard's six hits as Rogers went 3-for-3 and Paciorek was 2-for-4 with a double. Rogers has been the 'Tees hottest hitter as of late, as he is hitting .526 (10-for-19) in his last five games and batting .384 (28-for-73) in the month of August. The Manatees will look to snap their four-game skid as they welcome the Clearwater Threshers (32-26, 68-56) to Viera for a three-game set in the final home series of the regular season for the 'Tees. Taylor Jungmann (10-6, 3.59) will toe the rubber for the 'Tees in Friday's series opener at 6:35 p.m., as he is looking to become the second 11-game winner in the Florida State League this season. Jungmann has been lights out in August with a 2-0 record and a 1.69 ERA in four starts.

Lakeland (Tigers) 10 Brevard County 2 Box Score That caps off a 2-8 stretch for BC effectively knocking them ot of the playoff chase. 8 more (BC losses + Lakeland wins) will be the dagger. Matt Miller made the start for BC. Despite having the strikeout pitches working (7 K), Matt gave up 5 runs in just 5 IP. The GB's were not coming as freely for Miller today. Tommy Toledo was called on next for an extended relief appearance. Tommy went 3 innings giving up bupkis. Wild Thomas Keeling was summoned to finish the game but he instead gave up a boat load of walks and runs. I have affectionately called Keeling "Wild Thomas Keeling' this season, but it needs to be said; he is improving his control. He deserves big-time credit for that. Nice work, Thomas! Jason Rogers went 3-3 with 3 singles. Joey Paciorek had another 2 hits including a two-sacker. The big blow came from Cody Hawn who smoked his 11th homer. Strong armed Johnny Dishon nailed another runner at home plate. He has got to have upwards of 10 assists now. Game Log

I just want to continue fawning over the Rangers and their system. So, besides the five 2012 1st or 2nd round picks they sent to the AZL to start the season the Rangers also sent 4.95M bonus baby Nomar Mazera (181 AB's .260/.385/.469 21 XBH 5 SB (71.4%)) and 3.5M bonus baby Ronald Guzman (191 AB's .309/.363/.424 17 XBH 5 SB (83.3%)). Their #2 hitter is a teenage infielder from Venzuela with an .800 OPS named Luis Mendez. Their 2B is an 18 year old from the D.R. named Alberto Truinfel who has some idea at the plate despite little contact. Alberto is the younger bro of former super-prospect Carlos Truinfel. At SS, they have another teenager named Luis Marte who they signed for 250K. So, all together, they have roughly 15M invested in their AZL League team this season. Could that possibly be more than the entire Brewers minor league system? I am too scared to find out. Edit: That was just the hitters. Pitching for the Rangers last night was the ultra effective Angelo Leclerc. His 2011 DSL numbers would make Gian Rizzo blush. He is dominating the AZL this year.

Thanks! I know the leader board posts left off some of the better performers in the system, but I just thought it would be fun to compare these players to something, anything. Anyways, you can bet Hiram Burgos, Jason Rogers, T.J. Mittelstaedt, Jimmy Nelson, Drew Gagnon, Michael Garza, Tyler Thornburg, etc. would have been much more prevalent in the lists if they had stayed put all year.
