  1. I managed to get a question into John Sickels during one of his All Questions Answered threads: Me: Brewers' Prospects Besides Lawrie and Odorizzi, who is the best Brewer hitting prospect and who is the best Brewer pitching prospect? Thanks Jon. I think the Brewers MiLB system had a fantastic year. Really looking forward to see some improved grades for many guys. John: brewers Well to answer that properly I’d have to do a full system analysis. Lorenzo Cain finally put his tools together. Erik Komatsu had a really good year….Merklinger, Scarpetta would be other names Edit: Also, prolly should have stuck this here from the beginning. http://milbprospects.blogspot.com/2010/09/arizona-league-top-prospects.html Max Walla and Brooks Hall ranked here.
  2. http://milbprospects.blogspot.com/2010/09/arizona-league-top-prospects.html Max Walla and Brooks Hall ranked here. Walla career stats: http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=walla-001max Hall career stats: http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=hall--001bro Hall's season was def. encouraging. I didn't realize he managed to rack up 47 IP. Add that to the 50+ he likely saw in instructs, and he could reasonably start in WI next year. His numbers in Arizona are pretty comparable to what Odorizzi did for Helena in 2009.
  3. 'Roster filler' is a bad way to describe the pitching in Helena. Otherwise, you are probably right, Al.
  4. So he did lead the system in OPS. Awesome year for Cody!
  5. So who wants to plant a bug on Reid's answering machine?
  6. Did you know that Brendan Katin had the highest OPS of any minor league player in the Brewers' system this past year (.962)? Hawn may have passed him if you include his playoff number though. Edit: Looks like Hawn finished at .960.
  7. Anyone know where I can get Cody Hawn's regular season and playoff stats combined? Or do I just have to get my hands dirty? I don't think the BRef page has the combined stats. Edit: Found them. http://www.minorleaguesplits.com/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?pl=518776. Hawn finishes with 36 XBH's in 261 ab's. He had 38 BB's and 7 HBP's. Those numbers were good for a .960 OPS on the year, second highest in the entire system. Hopefully, he can continue to have good patience and power as he moves up. The K's were not crazy high (62), so that bodes well.
  8. There is Brent Brewer raw and there is Lo Cain raw. D'Vo is much closer to the latter.
  9. What a year for the rookie leagues! T-Rats should be excited after this past season. Edit: Eric Marzec has been a beast this year. Nelson in.
  10. Hawn making an impact with a 1st inning bomb. Miller has been solid through 3.
  11. I get trying to maximize a players' value. I'm talking about trying to win more games next season and 2012. If Rogers being in the MLB from game 1 does that, I think it has to be seriously considered, regardless of what the experts are predicting for the team. If you want to try and predict markets, trade values, future player performance, injuries, etc, 5 years down the road, more power to you. I just think the whole situation is much to dynamic for that.
  12. This has become an almost robotic response to prospect call-ups in Milwaukee. To me, by the time Rogers gets expensive in 2014/2015, we should have viable replacements ready. We have to get into a cycle like that with our youngsters. I think we are on the right track in that regard with all of the high upside pitching we have littered throughout the affiliates. The service time argument is valid for someone like Gamel who is blocked at every position he can play. In that case, burning up service time while riding the pine is detrimental to the team. Truth is, no one really knows if we are going to be competitive next year. I could very easily see us in the hunt, why handicap the team by playing inferior players? We still have to play the games, give me the guys that provide the best chance to win the game that day. Then, hopefully, we can plug in guys from the 2010/2011/2012 drafts. I mean, Mark Rogers better not be our only chance at a #1 SP for the next decade, right? I want to be competitive EVERY year, not just for 2-3 year stints. If Mark is one of the 5 best SP's next ST, I want him in Milwaukee for the whole year, service time be damned. We still would have 6 years of cost controlled years. That is an eternity in the baseball landscape, anything can happen. Sometimes, we just out-think ourselves with this service time stuff. Edit: TLB, this was not meant at a personal dig at you. There is some merit to your argument as well, I would just do it different.
  13. TLB, fwiw, those readings were recorded by a teammate sitting behind home plate with a piece of team radar equipment.
  14. I think he will build up stamina now that he can focus on pitching, meaning I want him to start until he proves he cannot. I, at least, have the patience to wait for him to make it as a SP.
  15. If Rogers earns a spot in spring training, I say give it to him. JJ should indeed start in H'Ville.
  16. Perhaps there are some intangibles (limits on his curve ball) that I am not aware of that go beyond what his stats can tell this year. However, I still find it hard to get overly excited about a 24 year old who missed two full years due to injuries. By the time he's allowed to go 200 innings he'll probably be 28 and in his arbitration years (This is the first year he's pitched over 100 innings). That's assuming he avoids additional injuries. If he can stay healthy for 2 or 3 straight years and shows better control, then maybe I'll start to get excited about him. I don't care how old someone is as long as the can touch 99-101 mph (as he did in his last milb start). He had the 4th best BAA in all of the minors. He gave up very few homers and extra base hits (pretty sure we determined that he gave up less than 20 XBH's all year). The previous injuries are indeed worrisome, but he says he doesn't even think about the arm anymore. He says everything feels great. People, it's very okay to get excited. Who gives a rip what Baseball America thinks. They are garbage anyways.
  17. People really, really need to read the Daily Link Reports more often. Rogers often was focusing on his change-up this year. In fact, there were many games where he was not allowed to throw his devastating curve ball. Mark easily just had one of the most exciting years in Brewer MiLB history. When he used his full arsenal, his command improved along with the results. He is a SP, no doubt.
  18. Pretty sure Farris is considered a very fine defender fwiw. There is plenty of room for him, might as well keep him. To me, it is quite obvious they think highly of him. Don't ask me why exactly, but he does have some major league quality skills.

  20. Actually, Homer, it was not a punishment. He was hurt.
  21. If you have room, you might as well keep Katin and Dillard. Say you put Katin on the 40 man. When could they remove him (I realize that he would be put on waivers if they removed him)? How much money would it cost? I'm sure there are some tricky rules or something I am not aware of.

  23. Salome has been pretty good for the entire second half. I hope they do find a wayto keep him, but I think he might want a fresh start.
