  1. I think the bigger question is could Yelich hit 50 HR at Miller Park alone this season - the one thing I'll be interested in tracking as the year progresses and sample size expands is the disparity between Yelich's home and road splits. I'm guessing they'll normalize a bit from each direction...although having him maintain a ~1.700 OPS and 1.141 SLG at home obviously would be a good thing!
  2. 5-5 roadie on what is probably their toughest roadtrip of 2019 - even if looking at their schedule before the season started. I'll gladly take it!
  3. That was just hammered...thank God that Yelich trade happened, otherwise we would've still been stuck with Santana on this roster instead of Gamel!
  4. Hiura had a 2 hit night in his debut against a starter throwing 90-91 mph. Since then he's faced pretty much nothing but guys throwing mid to upper 90s. The batspeed is there, the timing isn't yet with that legkick against velocity - the fact he's punished offspeed pitches in the zone the handful of times he's seen them is a good sign. I'd look for them to try and get the legkick just a bit less pronounced to give him the extra milliseconds needed to catch up to the increased velo. I'd rather have Hiura needing to make this adjustment than looking ok on fastballs but being completely off balance and getting fooled against offspeed consistently.
  5. Shaw has a role on the Brewers well beyond this year as either a fulltime 3B or platoon 1B with Aguilar. Heck, he could even fill in at 2B in a pinch against a RH starter. Thames is the odd man out and a trade involving him should be explored if Shaw demonstrates he's healthy and ready to rejoin the MLB club. IMO, the ideal 2019 scenario is to trade Thames for the best package of young prospects DS can find (think Adam Lind trade), keep Hiura up at 2nd, keep Moose as the primary 3B, and roll with Shaw and Aguilar as a 1B platoon. I like Thames both as a player and even moreso as a pretty cool dude - but his offense is replicative as a LH power bat who can get streaky and carry a team for a few weeks just as easily as he can slump badly and be a strikeout machine. To me Shaw and Thames are virtually the same offensive player when healthy - but Shaw provides more positional flexibility in the IF.
  6. Totally agree, as long as that contractor doesn't gripe about not getting the work and complain he's not getting what he deserves if he's got unrealistic expectations. If you want to stick with comparisons, I'd almost compare Keuchel and Kimbrel's current situations to a realtor around 2010 listing a house that's in good condition but with significant maintenance costs a couple years down the road (needs a roof, water heater, new furnace), and they base the listing price on spring 2006 assessments and wonder why nobody's chomping at the bit to buy it.
  7. Hopefully those first 6 IP without striking out 18 in AA don't prevent his name from finding a way to get on the list of top 30 Brewer prospects at the end of this year...he sure wasn't good enough to be on the list this preseason! https://blogs.fangraphs.com/top-32-prospects-milwaukee-brewers/ I really do hope Rasmussen stays healthy, because he's a big league pitcher. I'm sure other organizations have guys like this in their system that are question marks only due to injury concerns, and when they prove to be healthy they just fly up the system ladder without receiving much of any love from the BAs or MLB Pipelines of the world because there just wasn't enough time to write about him - but I do find it comical that scouting services who put these type of prospect rankings together can't find a way to put a guy with this kind of arm talent somewhere in the top 30 of a system that's supposedly below par. It's not like they picked this guy up from a supermarket and gave him a ball and were shocked he was hitting upper 90's with command.
  8. Stop with the hyperbole. Some people are choosing to see what he does before getting too excited and that's ok. That's also a really reactionary way to be a fan, but I guess to each their own. I'd rather be excited now that a player I've been over the moon about since the day he was drafted is ready to help the big league club without having to wait on even more evidence that he's going to be really good. Apologies with apparently getting too far over my skis - that's something I basically never do. When the thread started going down the road of citing Vlad Jr.'s 1st few weeks of MLB at bats as reason to temper hope he can easily outperform a 0.500 OPS while Hiura adjusts to MLB pitching, I should have simply posted that it's a fool's errand to compare any top prospect's initial sample of ABs in the bigs to another - IMO Hiura's seasoning as a collegiate bat is going to help him get his feet on the ground at the big league level offensively faster than guys who are more talented overall but haven't had the same amount of development time (Vlad Jr., Jimenez, heck look at Trout's first ~150 ABs) or who were called up early because of other tools moreso than being able to put bat to ball first and foremost (Buxton). They're all different - do i expect Hiura in this year's all star game? Heck no, but my view of him being the 2nd best hitter on this roster come 2020 is that he's going to make that MLB adjustment quickly and settle nicely into the 0.800-0.850 OPS range while showing plenty of room for improvement once he is comfortable at the game's highest level.
  9. Welcome to the show Keston! Contrary to other posts in this thread and for the sake of dosing this board with a well-deserved shot of optimism, I for one am looking forward to another quality RH bat balancing out the lineup and watching this guy rake. Heading into 2020, Hiura is going to be considered the 2nd best hitter on this MLB roster and will look pretty good hitting between Cain and Yelich at the top of the order. I'm really struggling to figure out why roughly 1/2 the posts in this thread revolve around collective "can't wait to watch him suck at the MLB level" takes when frankly there's nothing about his abilities as a hitter that point to him being anything less than an above average offensive MLB 2B right damn now. Dude was the best hitter in his draft and has performed well at all FIVE minor league stops + 1 AZFL stint he's made over the course of ~1.5 minor league seasons. Hiura is the best hitting prospect to come through the Brewers' system since the guy who may well retire after rewriting large portions of the Brewers' career offensive record books (Braunie) - it's an exciting day! Wait, now that he's up does this mean our farm system sucks again??
  10. I kind of disagree from the piggybacking standpoint - having a rotation spot/gameplan for two pitchers stretched out to be starters gives a manager some flexibility on dealing with extra inning games...as long as either starter in that piggybacking equation is able to actually start a game and give you at least 5 IP if the other one is needed for extra innings in a different game. Now, if Freddy is somehow unable to perform well when actually starting a game, then he's not part of a piggyback rotation spot - that makes him solely a long reliever and frankly would be sending him to the minors as soon as Anderson and/or Nelson are back with how the current staff is put together. And in all honesty, if any pitching staff in today's game has to complete 18 inning and 15 inning games over the course of ~9 days with only 1 offday sandwiched in there, it's going to be in tatters on the back end of that schedule. Bottom line is the offense needs to score more runs to take the load off this staff for a while.
  11. Has homered in three straight games. Really seems to come in bunches for him. He's got a long way to catch up to Hiura's OPS...hitting a HR a day sure helps!
  12. and that seals it...gonna be another game thread avoided like the plague for me
  13. Yeah that would've surely been Burnes' inning there had he not been pulled for Gamel. Albers made 1 bad pitch in his 2 hitters faced, so let's not get too carried away crucifying him. Contreras had a great AB and hit a tough pitch for a single, and Bote fouled off a bunch of good pitches until he got an outer half fastball to punch up the middle.
  14. baseball being baseball...couldn't ask for a better spot for Heyward to hit that ball to!
