  1. If the nationals don't score here, they should just contract themselves right now
  2. Dave Bush doing his best to allow the Nationals right back in the game
  3. I can just visualize an opposing manager walk to the plate with a batting tee, and Counsell would still find a way to battle and grit his way into a tough 9-pitch AB that resulted in a foulout to the first baseman.
  4. Counsell with the classic "i'm just good enough to foul off a series of very hittable pitches to get your pitch count up there" AB, and then bows out shamefully with a K
  5. Thank you Corey Hart!!! Thank you counsell, for providing corey the batting order protection he needs!
  6. "Cameron would instantly become the most feared hitter in the Nats lineup. He might even unseat Austin Kearns at cleanup." And that says a whole lot more about how terrible the Nats are than anything else On a different note, 5 Ks for this Mock clown through 3 innings? Are you serious?
  7. Counsell Cameron Kendall P ...bottom 4 in this lineup is very nationals-like
  8. Rickie Weeks sucks - it's obvious...all he does it hit home runs once it gets into mid-August
  9. LF Willie Harris SS Pete Orr 3B Ryan Zimmerman RF Austin Kearns CF Lastings Milledge 2B Ronnie Belliard 1B Kory Casto C Wil Nieves RHP Garrett Mock 4 years ago the Brewers lineup looked something like this - it could be much, much worse!
  10. With the Cards now 3 behind the Brewers, heading to Florida for 4 games while Milwaukee plays the Nats and Padres, and with Carpenter apparently back on the shelf, it's looking likely that their goose is cooked. They can still go on a run, but they've shown that they've been unable to consistently win against good teams. Their schedule doesn't include many gimmie series down the stretch, so I don't see them putting any pressure on the division or wild card leaders. I'm rooting for the Marlins to bury the Cards, then give the Cubs all they can handle. I think it's safe to root for the Braves to beat the Cubs as much as possible, too. I'm all for winning the wild card, but if the Brewers win today they could very likely be closer to overtaking the Cubs than giving up the wildcard lead to any of the teams chasing them.
  11. well, time to grow that wild card lead....as long as the Brewers win their games, it's fun to watch a Cub/Cardinal game knowing that no matter what happens, the Brewers improve their playoff position.
  12. Ryan Franklin still in to face the heart of the Cub order...this probably isn't going to end well for Cardinal fans
  13. since this is the 20th anniversary of the first wrigley night game (even though electricity was invented much earlier than that), hopefully the teams can accomodate PR's dream scenario of playing long enough to make 'em flick those lights back on to continue playing into the 25th.
  14. If I'm Rivera or Branyan, I take a vacation and see if anyone on the team even notices 25-man roster Ned....it helps to use 'em all during a 162-game season
  15. and to extras we go
  16. Plesac is Chicago's comcast sportsnet Cubs baseball guru - he does a very good job with the pre and post game stuff
  17. a tight game late that will probably force LaRussa into his leaky gas can of a bullpen...not looking too good for STL
  18. may be setting up for the first of 3 25 inning games
  19. I'll definitely take note of the score and follow the series with interest, but I'm more concerned with the Brewers beating the Nationals to increase their playoff chances than any other games. The team I'm rooting for the most over this next week is the Marlins - they play the Mets, Cards, and Cubs - if the Brewers play well and the Marlins don't tank or get red-hot, their chances improve regardless.
  20. and with all that marvelous data, all you have to add to it is the difference in the cost of living composite indices, which is (27.6% - 128.6 for Chicago and 101 for Milwaukee, based on 100 being the national average), and essentially the cities are identical.
  21. If you ask me, being duped twice by a shortstop without the ball over the span of a week tells me all I need to know about his baserunning instincts. I didn't feel like I had to go back and dissect his career on the basepaths to come to a different conclusion. That doesn't include being doubled off several times recently, or being picked off by the catcher against STL or by Wandy Rodriguez against Houston. Weeks isn't Billy Hall bad on the bases, but he's not great, either. Don't get me wrong, he runs hard and is definitely aggressive with whatever he tries to do on the bases, but he makes too many mistakes to be classified as a great baserunner.
  22. "Once. This is a classic case of, 'Man, [event X] would never happen to another team/player!' " wrong - it happened twice in the span of a couple of games. That infamous game in the Cardinal series, and game 1 of the Cub sweep, when Theriot faked like he had the ball on a stolen base, when it was actually rolling away into center field. I wasn't trying to indicate I thought Hardy was a better baserunner than Weeks - I was simply saying that just because a guy's fast it doesn't mean he's good at baserunning
  23. Defense, yes. Intangibles, no. Weeks is a far superior athlete &, in terms of success rate, is an elite basestealer Being a superior athlete doesn't qualify Weeks as being a great basestealer/baserunner. How many times has he been doubled or picked off? How many times has a middle infielder duped him from taking an extra base by simply acting like they had the ball? Is Weeks a great athlete? Definitely yes. He can steal bases with the best of them, too - but he is severely lacking in baseball instincts. He's still very raw and may very well develop into a solid baseball player, but right now he's not even close...I'd call him a toolsy guy that hasn't learned how to play the game yet. It's tough to consider giving up on him, but it's also tough watching him repeatedly make the same rookie mistakes that he's made before. Two things I wish Weeks would do more often offensively/on the basepaths - bunt for basehits and slide feet first. Sliding in feet first doesn't slow runners down as much as you'd think if done properly, and the runner can get a much better view of where the ball is in case it gets away from an infielder on an errant throw. Weeks pulls the ball so much that you almost never see the 3B playing him in - why not drop a bunt down from time to time to take advantage of that? with his speed, if Weeks gets an average bunt down that the pitcher/catcher can't field easily he has a hit, and can probably turn that into a double with a stolen base. You never see him try to bunt for a hit, though.
  24. If there were two weeks left in the season with how the standings currently are, obviously I'm rooting for the Cubs against the Cardinals. Since there are still nearly 2 months left in the season, consider me an impartial yet interested observer. The fact is unless the Brewers take care of their own business, which includes at least holding their own in the 6 Cub games they have left on their schedule, they're not making the playoffs regardless of what happens between the Cubs and Cards this weekend. I'm no statistical expert, but at this point in the season I'd still much rather be close to getting into the playoffs via 2 ways instead of one - so, I'd much rather maintain contact with the division-leading Cubs and keep a slight lead for the wildcard than watch the Cubs run away with the division and hope none of the other 3 potential wildcard contenders get hot and overtakes the Brewers. Marlins are off the Brewers' schedule, only 2 games left against the Cards, 3 against the Mets...6 against the Cubs. I know the Cubs wiped the floor with the Brewers last week, but they're the one team the Brewers could make up alot of ground on by playing them head to head the rest of this season. If the Brewers are trailing the Cubs by 3-4 games going into September with how the schedules progress, I like their chances, both for the wildcard and potentially deciding the division during the last two weeks of the season.
