  1. "Braun would have gotten and infield single off the glove of a defender and Fielder would have been hit, had Weeks never been picked off? I hate giving away outs on the base paths as much as anyone else but we have no idea how that inning would have played out. No one does. " Thank you mr. optimist - giving up outs on the bases is like attempting to sac bunt with nobody on base, it cripples an offensive inning. Sure there's no way to tell what would have occurred that inning, so why don't we assume that instead of the inning end with failures by Brewer hitters that the extra out would have led to a rally? Your argument goes both ways.
  2. looks like it's gonna be another one those offensive games...lots of hits and not nearly enough runs to show for it
  3. Weeks has 2 hits Weeks has screwed up on the bases twice Weeks has cost the Brewers 2 runs....what happened to run generator rickie?
  4. Russ, I agree that the odds could make a huge swing over the next 8-9 games...the Cubs had better get their ship righted quickly, because after tomorrow they have 4 games against a suddenly hot Marlins' pitching staff (and a roster that hits lots of homers) at Wrigley, then four against the good guys at Miller Park. Worst case scenario for the Brewers is that they're 2-3 games behind the Cubs heading into that four game set - the way the teams are playing right now, I'd be shocked if the actual scenario isn't a tied division lead or the Brewers leading by a game.
  5. GEOVANY SOTO is starting to hit like geovany......soto..... he's playing and swinging tired
  6. After all that's happened, the Crew appears to still be a game behind the Cubs - It sure looks like the wheels are starting to fall off for them, but they do have a ton of talent on their roster and are about to get Soriano back. Still a long, long ways to go - but it's obvious that things look much more encouraging than they did 35 games ago. What I'm most happy about is that for the first time since this thread was started is that the Brewers are sitting with the Wild Card lead a clear game ahead of St. Louis.
  7. Cub TV broadcast talking about Kerry Wood and his blister ointment.....priceless!
  8. I'm not used to this feeling - this is kind of nice more or less expecting to win....trying to temper my enthusiasm and keep calm with the prospect of a guaranteed series split, but with who we have pitching the next two games it's tough not to envision a series win at the least! great game, played well by both teams, and if the Brewers keep getting solid pitching from guys not named Sheets and Sabathia, they're going to scare the crap out of the rest of the NL, especially if guys like Hall and Weeks continue getting hot offensively
  9. Gotta finish this game before Pujols hits
  10. Probably splitting hairs here, but I would've pinch hit for suppan last inning - get as many hitters opportunities as possible, and any reliever entering the game would be facing the bottom of the Cards' order
  11. 3 more at bats to work with...probably need to put something together this inning, or Lohse will be pitching a complete game tonight....very manageable pitch count so far
  12. Anyone else think it's about time that some of the brewer hitters crowd the plate a bit to force Lohse to get off that outside corner? How many times through the batting order before somebody adjusts to what he's trying to do?
  13. I really hope the hitting coach actually takes the time to explain to Braun that he has rarely been swinging at strikes lately
  14. 112 pitches is 112 pitches when you're talking about a guy who hasn't come close to 200 innings in a season since 2004, and for a guy who at 89 IP this year has eclipsed his innings pitched for the 2006-2007 seasons combined. I agree that there's a difference between 100+ pitches in 5 innings compared to 7 innings of work, but I think he's too fragile to risk any effects from an extended outing by his standards. Harden has such good stuff that he almost NEVER is in trouble - that still hasn't stopped him from living on the DL. It's not like his previous DL stints were due to multiple 125 pitch outings. His past injury history shows that he doesn't wear down, he simply breaks.
  15. Something tells me Mr. Wolf's numbers are going to take a bretty big hit when he switches from pitching 1/2 his games in Petco to the juicebox. Absolutely confusing trade by the Astros, other than they really have nothing promising in their rotation to speak of with Oswalt out
  16. If Lou's that concerned with Harden's workload/injury history, why does he leave him in his second start as a Cub for 112 pitches? Also, Marquis is still in their regular 5-man rotation - as things stand right now he's making 15 starts down the stretch regardless, unless they give his rotation spot to Sean Marshall - Marshall's been pretty good this year, but nowhere near as dominant as Harden can be. I think instead of a platoon that allows Harden to completely miss turns in the rotation that he may be given and extra day or two between his starts, and use a combination of Marquis + Marshall to bridge the gap. Zambrano, Lilly, and Dempster would still pitch on regular rest, and Harden probably starts every 6th game or so.
  17. The only logical scenario for a Harden/Marquis platoon is if the Cubs are 8-9 games clear of anyone else in the division, and they want to make sure Harden's ready to go in the playoffs. Since there are currently 2 teams within 2 games of them in their own division, and a good number of NL east teams within 5-6 games of them for a possible wild card slot, platooning Harden with Marquis is a comically bad idea for the Cubs, and a great idea for the rest of the NL. That would be like Yost saying that Sheets is going to platoon with McClung now that we've passed the Cardinals by 0.002 percentage points for the wild card lead to make sure he's right for the playoffs. With the Cubs' september schedule, there's no way they can afford to rest pitchers/players and coast during august and expect to have a comfortable lead in the division 30 games from now.
  18. The biggest difference between the Cubs offense now and when they were rolling is that they're not drawing walks at nearly the same clip. Their team OBP has taken a big hit in July. Every team hits into tough luck now and again, but the Cubs have been scuffling to get on base for a long enough stretch to cause concern. I think part of the "over the head" description of Ramirez was that he nearly passed his career high for walks in a season by mid-June. Since then, his walk rate has plummeted. The rest of his offensive numbers were right in line with his career norm, but that walk rate/OBP was scary good for awhile with him. A pitcher with Harden's stuff is going to have tons of 3 ball counts if he's not throwing everything for strikes - hitters simply don't want to swing at most of what he's throwing, since it's absolute filth. A month ago, the Cubs had 6-7 regulars who were pushing a .400 OBP or higher, now they have only 1 in Theriot. It's not like they've completely stunk offensively, but there was simply no way they could sustain the kind of offensive success they were having for 162 games.
  19. It definitely didn't look like Harden talked Lou into letting him stay in the game - by reading Lou's lips, the first thing out of his mouth when he got to the mound was asking Harden if "you got one more batter in you?". I think Lou was 50/50 on whether to pull him or not on his way out, and decided about halfway out that he was going to let Harden face one more hitter. It wasn't like Lou went for the baseball and Harden refused to give it up.
  20. It wasn't the Torres move that I disliked - it was sending Mota out in the 6th to protect a 1 run lead. A manager always looks better when his players produce - Yost was playing with fire in the late innings, and the teams' continued inability to tack on a few more runs with all the oppotunities they had made the game closer than it needed to be. The Cards made some good (and some lucky) plays on hard hit balls, but the Brewers didn't have an offensive inning without getting men on base - gotta score more than 3 runs in 9 innings. Anyone else think with the addition of Durham to the team that Counsel may be used as a late inning defensive replacement at 2nd? There were two tough plays in the bottom of the 9th that Weeks couldn't make, but a solid defensive infielder makes at least one of those plays, which also keeps that game from going extras.
  21. Pinella is definitely a manager to push the limit on a pitch count. Harden just doesn't throw more than 100 pitches, yet he went 110 or 111 in his second start with the Cubs tonight. If he's healthy, he's nails - but extending him now and expecting him to take the ball every 5th day when he hasn't come close to a normal innings workload for a starter the past 3 seasons is definitely rolling the dice. Honestly, it's probably a gamble the Cubs need to take to give them the best shot for the division, but it's one that they'd rather not have to make since it really could impact Harden's effectiveness come playoff time.
