  1. NMF already knows this, but my second Moderna dose was Tuesday evening and I had a headache on Wednesday as well. By Thursday I was improved but could still (actually, can still today) tell I'd been recently vaccinated.
  2. I'd guess that you can draw up your estate however you want. Wikipedia indicates that Pat and Tyler's dad were divorced in 2007.
  3. Ahhh, you just reminded me that it's usually the first week of April when the city of Madison updates home assessment values. I just peeked and ours is still on 2020...for now. I have a whole other thing bugging me, though. One of my library tasks is fielding questions that people ask via the Contact Us buttons on our agency website. Mostly I weed out spam mail, leave reference questions for my reference colleagues, and answer questions that are "my turf." One this week was from a guy who wondered if we have old/discarded cards from our card catalog. He went to school here in the 90s and would like a few. That is actually a project I've been working on during the pandemic (weeding our remaining card catalog drawers), so I said sure I can send him a handful. He gives me his address and asks for any handwritten cards. My library predates typewriters, and there's a slim chance we have some handwritten cards, but on our current skeleton-crew schedule I do not have time to hunt for something like that. So I mailed out a handful and sent him a heads-up that it was leaving today and was a random grab of cards because only a few people are working on-site lately and there is no time to hunt through our boxes of scrap cards looking for anything particular. So he replies right away: Thanks! Were there any handwritten cards? *facepalm* WHAT DID I JUST SAY? Ultimately, I said it was unlikely. He seems to have accepted that but sweet jebus I wish people would read what I write to them more often than they do.
  4. Following up on this very late...heck yeah, this. One of my colleagues who's just shy of 65 has been on this kick and I don't think he's going to listen to my encouragement to just get it done. He is exactly as much in contact with students as I am. Any administered vaccine is progress toward an end to the pandemic. It'd be unseemly if you physically shove aside someone more elderly or otherwise at risk to butt into a line or something, but absent that, let's not waste the product.
  5. Haha, I didn't like how that particular surname rolled with Laura. Plus that was only like 20% of my rationale. I really like my birth name. In case it makes you feel any less salty...one of the brothers in that family did marry someone named Laura, so there is someone out there with that first and last name.
  6. I see the same pattern with members of the media, both male and female. I was 18 (in the 1980s) when I decided that if I ever married, I would keep my surname. That was maybe 20% because I was dating someone with a longish ending-in-ski name, but mostly because I like the name I was given at birth.
  7. March 9 / April 6 is my exact timetable. I'm not on UW-Madison's payroll but I have an affiliate staff ID, work on campus and have direct contact with students who work at or have appointments to visit my library. The SO (64 and diabetic) began to hound walgreens dot com and woke me up early last Saturday morning saying "quick, go log into Walgreens." In the end, Walgreens asked for our personal IDs but not our work IDs. Slightly sore arm for me for a couple of days (like if I touched the vaccination site) and SO had a more sore arm. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are my WFH days, so two Tuesday doses stand to work out nicely.

    Pizza

The hawing household also favors the salad bar at Rocky's - though of course we haven't been in at least a year, and I can't imagine they're doing salad bars nowadays. The Madison location closest to Camp Randall has/had a honey mustard dressing that was excellent.
  9. Our first cat's "decision" was made in December (17+ years ago, because we got the recently departed guy the next month) and we got the cremains on our way to Christmas Eve dinner. But it was the first time we'd had "her" with us for the holidays since we are always on the road for it. Losing a pet can be as tough, but what you get out of pet companionship can be so good. I really think it at least evens out in most cases. So I hope none of you decides against adopting a pet primarily because it'll hurt when the day comes to say goodbye.
  10. Honestly, each time we've had a pet pass away, figuring out the impossible timing of when's "not too late" but "not too soon" is the most upsetting part for me. Not that the after is awesome, but there is some relief at not having to constantly monitor appetite and symptoms. Appreciate the kind thoughts, though.
  11. We had to put down our super-senior (age 17.5) cat Tuesday night. He survived bladder stones, hyperthyroidism and kidney disease, but not lymphoma. He was older than three of my four nieces/nephews, all high schoolers now. It's not our first round at pet loss, but it still sucks. This was the cat who had bonded with me. Sigh.
  12. The notice appears under his birth name, Frank John Palleria. https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/jsonline/name/frank-palleria-obituary?pid=197664019
  13. Here's hoping he's found peace, but I have a heck of a time classifying Screech as a TV treasure in my mind.
  14. The message in the opening post was emailed to (at least some) SSHs on Monday 1/25. Ours was sent to my SO, whose name is on our account. I was mainly concerned whether continuing to defer would threaten our SSH seniority (which is getting to be hefty). Per an email response from a ticket rep to another SSH, neither of the options in the January 25 email would mess up seniority.
  15. Tonight I had COVID vaccine FOMO for the first time. My SO runs a weekly Zoom call for his family and tonight his siblings and siblings-in-law (all in Kenosha) were chattering excitedly about their scheduled first doses this coming week. They're all 65+. (SO just turned 64 this past week, though he's type-2 diabetic, so he may be bumped up the line this spring.) My mom (80) is scheduled for her first dose Tuesday in Dane County. My sister and her husband, who both have public safety jobs in Dane County, got their first doses this past week. My brother and his wife are both teachers in southwest Wisconsin. Pretty much all of them have solid reasons to warrant vaccination ahead of me, but I don't feel particularly risk-free, either, and my job is on-site and public facing part-time. A sister in law on the call tonight was all I'M JUST TIRED OF NOT BEING ABLE TO GO PLACES, while I was thinking "yeah, I'd just like to not be at risk of dying by going to my job." (Yes, this could go in the COVID thread, but I wanted to emphasize that it bugs me.)
  16. That we all knew this day would (someday) come doesn't really make it hurt less. I've changed into my stadium giveaway Aaron shirsey, despite it being (checks weather) 9 degrees outside in Madison. Rest in power, Henry. Milwaukee was lucky to have you.

    Pizza

Absolutely! Pizza Hut in Monroe in the 1980s was The Bomb and The Place To Be after every high school event. Once I moved to Madison, I found non-chain pizzas and have for the most part never looked back.
  18. It took a global pandemic for me to get a legitimate "Christmas vacation." I worked on the Monday before Christmas and my next workday will be tomorrow (January 4). Usually I have to work every day my library is open around the holidays because my students have left town by then. The end-of-2020 holidays were looking good to me when I set up the 2020 schedule (the schedule that was active for 2.5 months) because the state holidays (eves and days) were Thursday-Friday, which sets up two consecutive four day weekends. If it had been possible, I'd trade in a bunch of workdays in late December if it could have reversed the pandemic.
  19. Only 15 pages of what's-bugging-us posts for 2020? I guess we had enough bug-specific threads to spread things out some. For 2021, check this out: http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=40163
  20. Because even though the dumpster fire that was 2020 is now behind us (at least chronologically), things will still bug us.
  21. Find the rest of 2021 randomness here! http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=40162
  22. Time to turn the page from 2020. Happy random new year! (Would have done this on NYE but for the forum outage)
  23. Gotta bring this back for Mary Ann of Gilligan's Island. Come ON, 2020. https://variety.com/2020/tv/news/dawn-wells-dead-gilligans-island-mary-ann-1234876755/
  24. I'm going to guess for now it's borne of MUST CUT ALL THE COSTS and not "who needs social media in the 2020s?" Either way, it's bad news. Makes me wonder if the ticket rep staff will be next - perhaps not eliminated but maybe scaled way back.
  25. Murderer's Row OF MY HEART. But good for jschris!
