  1. I'm enjoying your posts, lithium, but the experience you had with Robin Yount must have been in 1989 or 1982, because those were his MVP years.
  2. Was your son a new-year's baby? I know someone who was the new year's baby in West Bend back in the 60s and her parents got a lot of freebies as a result. To make this not entirely off-topic...December 2008 has now become Madison's all-time snowiest month, with 40.4 inches as of 4:00 PM December 31.
  3. I'd probably pay money to hear Melvin say "we'd like to add a bay window, and that".Does he ever say he's "not motivated" to go with a certain product or procedure? Because then you'd know exactly what he wanted to do. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  4. I sent you the link to the long-sleeved shirt via PM, but I see a short sleeve version is also available on Amazon. (though not at the deeply discounted prices of other Majestic items)
  5. I've got the same pennant, but I also received it as a gift. I'm guessing my sister got it at a memorabilia shop or something.
  6. Some of the published genealogies at my library purport to trace their family back to Adam and Eve. I haven't read them to see if they literally did this (and if so, how).
  7. When I turned 40, one of my students said not to worry, that 40 was the new 20. She had just turned 20. It made me wonder whether 20 was the new infancy or something.
  8. About a year before he died (at age 91), my maternal grandfather casually mentioned to my uncle that his biological father wasn't who everyone thought it was. The "real" father took off when Grandpa was a baby, and he got his surname from his mother's next husband. My mom and her sisters were a little rocked by that admission, but it didn't bowl me over - probably because I hadn't given the issue much thought to begin with. But in general, surprises like that are not an uncommon outcome in genealogy research. My library has seen its share of researchers who discovered something odd or occasionally even sordid (like criminal activity) about their ancestors. RoCo, I have some more website information that's not in a handy postable format, so I sent you a PM about it.
  9. Ancestry.com is also available at many public libraries (including the Hedberg in Janesville), though licensing restrictions mean you have to visit to use them. Should you have the time and inclination to get to Madison, the Wisconsin Historical Society Library is a huge genealogical resource (both print and online). Please send me a PM if you would like more information on that. WHS is my employer, though I don't work directly with the genealogy stuff.
  10. It's the season of giving, too, so why not talk about the 'flip side' of Christmas gifting? I warned my family that for gifts from us, it would be more of a Brewers Christmas than usual. I got a playoff program for the older nephew, a new Brewers cap for the youngest nephew, and playoff t-shirts for both. (Thanks, Kohl's and clubhouse sale!) My mom now has a Kapler t-shirt, since Gabe the Babe emerged as her favorite over the course of the 2008 season; and also a Kevin Mench signed ball (thanks, mlccrispy!). Kevin was her favorite in 2007. My mother has a lifelong habit of rooting for the underdog. The nieces' interests lie elsewhere (for now), and I don't want to dress them as Brewer cheerleaders, so their gifts were more in the ballet/fairy princess realm. The S.O. also has a new Brewers shirt, courtesy of me: http://mlb.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pMLB2-4875936dt.jpghttp://mlb.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pMLB2-4875936_alternate1_dt.jpg This is a "ticket history" shirt which on the back has images of past "special" tickets (1975 All-Star Game, 1981 playoffs, 1982 WS, and the 2002 all-star sham). The S.O. is also now the happy owner of a massage pillow, and the first season DVD of WKRP in Cincinnati. He can watch his Turkeys Away anytime he wants now. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  11. I hate to tell you guys, once you start to feel old, it just gets more so. I find that I notice the "passage of time" more in some years than in others.
  12. The Kessler's voice just sounds super smarmy to me. However, even before this thread existed, I've heard of good experiences at the place. And trwi7 has a very good point: possibly no jewelry commercials are as bad as those for Jared. Though in the Madison area, Chalmers is up there on the annoyance scale. Every time Scott Chalmers says "It means more if it's from Chalmers," I want to say back to the radio, "of course it does - to YOU."
  13. Every time I've looked outside this afternoon or evening, it looks hazy and for a moment I assume it's due to more falling snow. Then I remind myself it's fog.
  14. I'm afraid that as a non-wearer of jewelry, I'm the wrong person to ask. However, I am loving the juxtaposition of your lead post and your signature. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Good luck with your ring quest.
  15. You should just start walking around town, and tapping your left or right arm while pointing at people. This made me laugh out loud in the library. My mom looks for Brewers stuff at garage sales and every Christmas I get the result of her quests. This year was the smallest haul yet - a Christmas ornament commemorating the 1982 World Series appearance. Her guess is that more people are hanging on to their Brewers stuff, which in the big picture is not a bad thing.
  16. I read that the head was found and thought of you (except I'd forgotten which poster was connected to the gorilla - so I wasn't immediately thinking "backupcatchers!", but rather "the poster from brewerfan!"). Well, while I'd rather be elsewhere, I am very grateful to not be in retail today, as an employee or customer.
  17. Charter is carrying MLB on channel 84 in Madison, but it requires digital equipment to view (despite being in the expanded basic package). I'm not ready yet to switch to a service that several people I know have had problems with, just to get MLB. But don't let me stop this thread.
  18. So I'm at work today (not letting you down, state of Wisconsin taxpayers), and while that makes me feel a little surly, the driver of the bus I took to work was so surly that I now feel determined to not be "that guy."
  19. I feel like a lemming whenever I shop at Target. Consequently, I don't shop there very often. Does that make me un-American?
  20. Yeah, along those lines I'm not going to assume we'll have access (with our primitive but reliable analog expanded basic Charter service in Madison) until I actually see it. Charter has a few channels which they appear to describe as "expanded basic" but you need extra equipment to see it.
  21. We've had a Christmas lights tour every December for years. Even Madison has some well lit houses and neighborhoods. Kenosha is better decorated overall, and has a "Christmas Lane" neighborhood that is completely decked. We usually drive through there on Christmas Eve, but couldn't last night because of the weather. I'm hoping we can get there sometime in the next week. We don't always watch A Christmas Story, but Charlie Brown Christmas is must-see for me (it's only two months older than I am). I am also a sucker for certain (but not all) of the Rankin Bass puppet animation shows: Rudolph, Santa Claus is Comin' to Town, Year Without a Santa Claus.
  22. iPod! I continue to inch toward hipness. I got the classic with the humongous capacity by telling the S.O. I'd let him put some Neil Diamond on it.
  23. Ah, Series, had I realized you were in Madison I would have waved. Truly, it sounds like you've experienced a whole winter's worth of stuff in under a week. We noticed on the news tonight a bunch of weather-related traffic fatalities. This makes us feel like we made the right move in not traveling tonight.
  24. Excellent point. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif For years I've wished for a slower-paced Christmas, and now that we have one I'm not sure what to do. This isn't fully bugging me.
  25. Imagine if he had found something with Ned Yost on it. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Random observation: I don't think I've ever seen only two users online (plus one anonymous). I don't know if we three are stalwarts or losers.
