  1. -I liked feeling a part of a select group of fans who were crazy about the Brewers no matter how they played--now I overhear people talking Brewers everywhere. I'd rather have the bandwagoners than not. They allow us to have a payroll that's at least above the "embarrassing" level. With winning comes bandwagon fans. I don't think it was so much the stadium that gave people this feeling you describe, so much as it was that outside of a few years here and there, the Brewers were perennial losers during their tenure in County Stadium.
  2. the impossibly green grass at County. That is EXACTLY the words I've used to describe the field at County myself. Man, I loved that first site of the grass coming up out of one of the tunnels into the seating area. But yeah, other than that, the place was a dump.
  3. Oh, and I forgot to add, Ghost Rider sucked.
  4. Being in the extreme minority that didn't at all like Sin City, I was skeptical going into 300. The visual style of Sin City didn't bother me, I just didn't find the story(s) to be all that interesting. Anyways, with the hype, the hoopla, and my skepticism all piling up, I settled in to try to watch 300 tonight, and just enjoy it for what it would be, rather that what I thought it would be, (or what I've read and been told it's supposed to be) All I can say is I loved it. Fantastic visuals (I really do think this is a "wave of the future" type movie in the aspect of visual presentation). The storyline and dialogue were excellent (even though we know how the story ends, eh?). The action scenes were outstanding. Can't speak for anyone else, but I loved the slow-down-to-super-slo-mo followed by the speed-back-up-to-normal style they used during the battle sequences. I really did expect the story and acting to be completely drowned out by the visuals in this film, but that just wasn't the case at all. This one justifies the hype.
  5. Despite a slow June and July, Jenks hasn't had a "bad" season, he's been slightly above average or so. Given his platoon partner that has done quite well vs. lefties, I'd say he's at least met what my expectations would be for him as a platoon mate. I know that his early season numbers skew the overall, but he was white-hot during that 24-10 start, and those wins count every bit as much as any game they win now. Without that 24-10 start, the Crew is sitting in 2nd, or even 3rd at this point. Regardless of how streaky a player is perceived to be, his final numbers will tell you a good bit about how much he helped the team be above (or below) average. Like others though, all this logical thought doesn't keep me from hoping that he gets blazing hot now that we're down to 50 games left in a tight as heck race.
  6. Hot Fuzz was great. Rented it last night. I expected the ridiculous over-the-top gunfighty stuff to start earlier than it did, but that's hardly enough to take it down a notch, IMO.
  7. Ok, for those of us who can't read the tiny, tiny font, how do I adjust font size?
  8. Like a lot of people, I didn't click on the "No IGT" thread, because I thought it was something silly/superstitious that people were throwing around, and didn't consider it being taken seriously. Not being a person that goes in the IGT more than a few times a year, that didn't bother me, but for the "RULES" of posting, for even one night, to be "NO TALKING ABOUT THE BREWERS GAME" on Brewerfan.net seems a tad bit over the top, at least to me. I'll pile on with everyone else, the mods jobs are not easy, and it's greatly appreciated that we have a site that's by and large free of the nonsense that goes on at ESPN, but this thing last night was, in my opinion, pretty over the top, and so were the reactions, from both sides of the fence.

  10. This will take some getting used to.
  11. Pitching one inning isn't the issue for relievers, it's appearances, and as other's have touched on, the amount of games that he's warmed up in, but not actually been put in the game. There is a lot of stress put on the arm just to get it ready to go and pitch full bore, even if it is only for one inning.
  12. I realize 64 at bats is a small sample, but having said that.... In 64 at bats vs. LHP Braun has 10 homers A .500 batting average 17 extra base hits. A 1.667 OPS. That's pretty much complete nonsense. That's not even video game numbers.
  13. It's easy to blame the media, but they're only giving us what people want. They won't stop showing us garbage like this til we stop watching. And it's surely not the fault of the guy running. (Unless of course he called the news station to let them know he was going to go on a high speed chase with the cops).
  14. If Linebrink wasnt setting up for Hoffman, he would be closing already. Linebrink's got a 3.80 ERA in 44 appearances this year. In a pitchers park no less, that doesn't exactly scream closer material. He had outstanding seasons in 04 and 05. Last year and this year he's pretty much been average.
  15. Wow. I decided to take a night off from the Brewers, and just came on to check some scores. I know what I have to say has probably already been said, but I'll say it anyways. I understand that the flameout rate on pitching prospects is absurdly hight, but I still have a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that the best Doug could get for Will Inman was a middle reliever on the wrong side of 30 who's not performing any better than Wise, Turnbow, or Shouse. I want to "win now" obviously, but I don't know how much this move really helps us do that, not to mention the fact that it's at the expense of a guy who was considered our top pitching prospect still in the minors.
  16. I remember reading earlier in the year how Cordero prefers a low key intro when he's coming into the game, and doesn't want a riot of noise and lights accompanying him onto the field.
  17. I'm as much a stat head as the next guy, and I'll preach sample size as well, but having watched Balfour's few appearances, I don't think you really even NEED to see his stats to see that he looks completely lost on a big league mound right now. Maybe it's just jitters, who knows, but to echo the sentiments of Greg, Geno, and others, the Brewers simply can't afford to let Balfour (try to) get his nerves back in pressure situations when the team is in a tight race. Ned has been careful with many of his other relievers to wait to put them into pressure spots until they've been up a little bit and gotten their feet wet. Maybe with Balfour the fact he did have some ML experience was a deciding factor, but for now I can't see putting him in a game that's within 5 runs one way or the other.
  18. Lineup protection is vastly overrated. Dye doesn't all of a sudden suck this year because of who's hitting around him. Having Fielder or Braun hitting behind him isn't going to be some sudden elixer that's going to solve his hitting woes.
  19. Sammy's hitting .242, with a putrid .299 OBP. Coupled with the fact that he's downright awful in the field anymore, I'd pass, even if they offered him up for nothing.
  20. f not, I think that we'll see a Jenkins / Mench platoon for one more year. I can't realistically see them paying a Jenks/Mench platoon upwards and over 13 million dollars to be average at best. Mench has been passable, only because, like Jenkins, he's been shielded from facing same-side pitching for the most part.
  21. Jenks' OPS by month this year. April -- .943 May -- .852 June --.735 July -- .586 That's not exactly a trend that shows a rosy outlook. As far as finding a replacement for Jenks for next year and beyond, it can't be all that hard to find a guy to put up a .800 OPS when he only has to face opposite hand pitching. And I'll bet such a player comes a lot cheaper than 9 million dollars. When Jenks started hot, I was a proponent of re-upping him for next year, but that was with the caveat that he stay productive and finish the year with something approaching an .850 or better OPS, considering he's been shielded by and large from left handed pitching. Yes, he does have an .833 OPS vs righties this year, but just like his overall numbers, I'm sure most of that was built up in that hot streak in April.
  22. The same could be said about Weathers at age 29 and Kolb at age 28. Like I said, they're definately exceptions, not the rule. I don't think it's worth finding out in the middle of a very tight pennant race if Grant Ballfour is the next Dan Kolb.
  23. You should see the vent thread. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  24. If you get the out at first, you can walk the next batter, and hope for a groundball you can turn over. Speaking about Balfour.... I'm willing to give a little rope, considering it is a 3 inning sample we're talking here. However, in those 3 innings he's looked completely lost, and god willing, he should not be used in a "tight game" situation until he proves he can handle the nerves of pitching in a big league game. I'll also grant that despite early career struggles, Weathers and Kolb both turned out to be decent pitchers, but that doesn't mean it's the rule. Balfour is 29, has been injured, and wasn't very good when he WAS in the majors. I'll agree the guy has "stuff", and there's (slight) potential to be a quality bullpen arm, but before people start calling this guy next year's closer based on what he did against minor league hitting, let's see him get through at least a few weeks of major league ball without having a nervous breakdown on the mounc.
  25. Tony LaRussa has done more to set back managerial creativity than any one other person in baseball's last 50 years, if not longer. That's all I got.
