  1. 1. Braun's defense is bad. UZR has him -7.2/150 in RF. at It is what makes him an average to above average RFer. His bat is above average but his defense drags it all down. He's 11th in fWAR with 1.9 wins. The maligned Van Slyke has a WAR of 1.6 is about half the playing time. Ethier has 1.9 in fewer PAs as he's basically being platooned. 2. I get the Harper comparison to a degree. But it is important to stress that Bryant is older than Harper. And Harper's 2012 rookie season may still end up being a better season that Bryant's 2015 as Bryant's BABIP comes down to a sustainable level.
  2. What would be the point? The Brewers cut salary for next season as it is. If/when Lind gets moved, they have only Garza, Braun and KRod making over $5 m and KRod may get moved. I'd rather have Garza try to return to form to be able to trade for something of value instead of passing more money to the Brewer owners.
  3. My guess is it comes out Garza has basically been injured and trying to pitch through it all season. He has avoided going on the DL because of his contract with its voiding of options and $1m option if he spend too much time on the DL for 2018.
  4. 1). Braun is not Tulowitski. Tulowitski is one of the top shortstops in the game. Braun is an average to slightly above average RFer. Tulo has excess value in his contract. Braun is liekly jsut worth what he is making given the number of deferrals in his pay. So no, the Tulo trade is not a starting point. 2). The Dodgers have the remains of Crawford's contract to send back to the Brewers but corner OF is the last position they need. They have Ethier, Van Slyke, Puig, Hernandez, and Guerrero splitting time already over 2 positions. And if they want to get rid of Puig they can get something they would actually want instead of Braun.
  5. This. Melvin can't force the other team to do something they don't want to do. If they were willing to deal Wheeler and did trade Fulmer, I'm willing to bet that trading both was an option if we wanted it. We just wanted Flores for some reason. No that is not true. Flores was coming back so that the Mets payroll wouldn't go up too much. And the Wilpons still rejected the payroll increase.
  6. That just isn't true. He got 337 PAs in 2013 in 134 games. It would be great if he turned into Brady Clark as a guy who puts it together during ages 29-31. It is just rather unlikely.
  7. Unlikley. Braun goes from no trade clause where he can block a few teams (6) to one where he can only be traded to the Dodgers, Angels, Nationals, Rays and Marlins. Which really means the Dodgers, Angels, and Nationals. He could waive it, but that likely means picking up the 2021 option of $15m.
  8. Toronto has the best run differential in the AL by 25 runs (103 to the Astros 78). They are likely the best team in the AL before they added to it.
  9. Not sure why Davies wouldn't be enough. He would be a fringe top 100 prospect.
  10. Lookout Landing is a fairly famous Mariner's blog. Jeff Sullivan from fangraphs founded it I think (or at least did a bunch of work to make it famous).
  11. Adding Fiers basically doubled the value the Brewers are giving up
  12. The Braves basically gave up a top 25-50 prospect to for Olivera and salary relief. Now if Olivera was 25, sure. But he's 30 and the Braves are in rebuilding mode. I don't get it.
  13. If Lagares is coming to Milwaukee, then Parra might also be heading to the Mets.
  14. Just because Brewer fans don't know how good Fiers has been doesn't mean Wheeler is bad. He's not bad, but I don't consider him a potential ace which is what I think Carlos Gomez is worth. Now Wheeler's injury makes this weird, but Gomes has what, around $20-25 million in excess value on his contract? For Hoffman the Rockies had to give up like $60 million in excess value and Hoffman may never come close to what Wheeler has done.
  15. Just because Brewer fans don't know how good Fiers has been doesn't mean Wheeler is bad.
  16. Actually his K-rate is still pretty good. As lefty reliever specialist he would likely still be serviceable.
  17. Yep. One has been the most versatile players for years with a career wRC+ of 119 while the other is a platoon corner outfielder with a wRC+ of 95. Not many teams are going to be swayed by Parra's BABIP driven numbers. Zobrist projects in the range of being .5 to .7 wins better than Parra over the rest of the season. That said, I don't like this trade for the Royals. They would have been better off getting another starting pitcher.
  18. So a couple of folks said that they have a hard time imagining the Brewers getting back sufficient value to justify a trade of Fiers. But that means one of two things: 1) he has a lot of value to the Brewers, or B) he has little value to others. Given that he is effective and cost-controlled for several seasons, that eliminates B) above. But if he has a lot of value to the Brewers for those reasons... wouldn't he have a lot of value to other teams as well? Isn't this a classic case of undervaluing your own players and overvaluing other team's players? If you knew nothing else about a player except that he was an effective major-league starter and cost-controlled for several seasons beyond next year, wouldn't you say that player has a lot of value to any major league team? Why would the cost to the Brewers to acquire him or replace him be any more than the cost of another team to acquire him? Fiers is a number 2-3 starter but doesn't have the stuff that makes go crazy. Even here people think of him at a back end starter. So because of his perceived worth versus actual worth its difficult to see a decent deal being made for him. He's the anti-Peralta, the guy who people think is a top end starter when everything he's done points to him being a #4 at best.
  19. Every pitcher not named Peralta is striking batters out by the ton. So by basically the one pitching stat that can even be gauged at this point you would expect a huge improvement in pitching results. Smith, Broxton, Fiers and KRod each have a K/9 over 11.
  20. He is not even that bad in the OF. I would say slightly below average and I am not that big of a fan of his defense. Someone not around for Carlos Lee's time in LF?
  21. Castro is coming off a 2.7 win season and is getting paid $6M, $7m, $9M, $10M, and $11M going forward. He's not the superstar the Cubs touted but when he cares he an average to above player getting paid little.
  22. Podsednik was a 28 year old rookie in 2003 with a 3.2 WAR season. Segura was 23 with a 3.5 WAR season. There really isn't a comparison.
  23. Hamilton is not any better than Davis with the bat, with Davis having a chance to really break out still. And the difference in defense is likely slight.
  24. Ramirez's "terrible" 2nd half was a wRC+ of 98. You know, basically average. This isn't 2004 where the 3B will routinely put up an 850 OPS. Given that Headley was determined to take a below market deal to play for the Yankees and its been apparently determined that Rogers isn't a 3B there wasn't a bunch of options out there.
