  1. Lannan has some weird splits. His OPS against at home is .848 (for a league-adjusted OPS+ of 133), but on the road it is just .639 (OPS+ of 68). And he has pitched at St. Louis, the Mets (twice), Atlanta (early when their offense was pretty good), the Dodgers, and at Coors, so it's not like he took advantage of a bunch of bad teams. He also defies regular platoon practices: lefties actually OPS .109 higher than righthanders.
  2. The Onion AV Club recently did an appreciation (sort of) of this film: http://www.avclub.com/content/feature/the_new_cult_canon_showgirls Not really safe for work.
  3. Be sure to tell why they put the red dot in the bleachers when an outfielder catches one on the warning track!
  4. jflick (and those in charge), I for one would absolutely love to read an article about what goes into making GameDay work. Incidentally, my 78-year-old father thinks GameDay is the most magical thing since the invention of the aeroplane.
  5. If ever a team and its fans needed the calming power of Haiku Night, it is this one.
  6. Colorado's starters this weekend were Jorge de la Rosa, Valerio de los Santos, and now Glendon Rusch. Hard to compete when 60% of the rotation comprises Brewer rejects.
  7. Josh Kalk at Hardball Times had this to say about Gamel's defense: "Despite cutting his error rate dramatically this year, Gamel still has a ways to go. When Ryan Braun was in Double-A at third, most of his errors came on throws, giving hope that if he could fix that he could stick at third. Gamel has made a rather even amount of fielding and throwing errors, but Money said that footwork was to blame for most of his problems. From what I saw, he let the ball play him several times, making a fielding error and a bobble that would have been another error if his strong arm hadn't saved him. He did make several nice plays, including a backhand stop on a ball down the line with runners on first and second. He got up, stepped on the base, and threw to first in one motion for a double play. He seemed more comfortable going to his backhand than going to his left, which might not be too big an issue if Escobar continues to play to his left. It seems the tools are there for Gamel to stick at third..." Source: http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/seeing-stars
  8. Padres Thirst for Power and Get Vaughn From Brewers By MURRAY CHASS Published: August 1, 1996 The San Diego Padres, seeking a power boost for their pennant run, grabbed Greg Vaughn, one of the American League's primary power hitters this season, from the Milwaukee Brewers. For Vaughn and a player to be named, the Padres gave the Brewers outfielder Marc Newfield and relief pitchers Ron Villone and Bryce Florie.

  10. Many of the trades analyzed in the following links qualify as trade deadline deals: http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/mid-season-blockbusters-july-part-one-1896-1996/ http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/mid-season-blockbusters-july-part-two-1997-2006/ http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/mid-season-blockbusters-august/ The Sutton and Smoltz deals were both done in August, as was Bagwell-for-Larry Andersen. Houston picking up Randy Johnson for a stretch run qualifies as a great deadline pickup, even though it cost them Freddy Garcia and Carlos Guillen. Trading Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano at the deadline was of course a colossal goof, but perhaps no worse than Seattle swapping Jason Varitek for Heathcliff Slocumb.

  14. Good day: Brad Nelson with a single, a double, a triple, and two steals. Bad day: Eric Munson 0-for-7 with three strikeouts, three passed balls, and a throwing error.

  17. "On a side note are there any other teams that have been moved and become a different franchise and then been resurrected in the same city under the same name?" The Baltimore Orioles had been a National League power in the 1890s (three consecutive championships from 1894-96). Then the name was resurrected for the minor league franchise throughout the first half of the 20th century before it became the name of the relocated St. Louis Browns, who of course had started as the 1901 Milwaukee Brewers.
  18. Agreed. Is there some petition I can sign?
  19. Only 185 days until Opening Day!
  20. Were I a Cubs fan, Zambrano's line so far tonight might bother me a little: 7 IP, 13 hits, 6 runs (all earned), 2 BBs, and ZERO K's. Since I'm not a Cubs fan, it bothers me not in the least.
  21. 4-0 Reds, Zambrano with 60 pitches through three and two-thirds.
  22. Those of us without access to tonight's ceremonies have at least been treated to a Reds 2-0 lead over Zambrano and the Cubs, courtesy of Griffey's two-run double.
  23. I missed Hall--hard for me to count and read at the same time, I guess. I would have included DeJean, but the memory of his on-the-mound argument with Royster seems somehow emblematic of those years.
