  1. Bill Mazeroski. The guy had a career OPS+ of 84. His career OBP is .299. He got thrown out on 46% of his steal attempts. He's in the HOF largely because of how he could turn the DP, and how I would love to see him do that for a season or two. I can only guess that it must have been analogous to seeing Ozzie Smith in his prime.
  2. I realize he's a college guy playing in short-season ball, but Mike Brownstein's 14/1 BB/K ratio is fun to see, and his .614 OBP is downright Bondsian.
  3. Encouraging that (1) even with a little slump he's still 15th in the league in OPS as a 20-year-old and (2) the HR was against a lefty, against whom he was hitting just .200.
  4. Brewer has some crazy, Billy Hall-esque splits: .293/.375/.463 against lefties, .195/.246/.246 against righties. Not too surprisingly, he got his hits tonight aginst a lefty.
  5. Wow. Nice start to the evening by Brent Brewer. A double, a homer, and three DP turns, all in the first five innings.
  6. Casey Baron appears to be a junior Brian Shouse. Lefties are hitting .129 against him with 4 hits, a walk, and 13 K's in 10 innings. Small sample size, but certainly intriguing for a 34th-round pick.
  7. Another comp is Matt Diaz, who is actually very similar to Jacobs. Diaz had some not terrible k/bb ratios (2/1) in the low minors, but those ballooned to about 4/1 in AA and AAA and have stayed pretty bad in the majors. If Katin could improve to those rates, he might have a shot. He doesn't hit for Diaz's average, but has better power and--per BA--is supposed to have a very good outfield arm
  8. How often do players his age develop the skills to take walks? His 8/50 BB/K rate is certainly working against him, especially coming off 13/109 last year. But, yeah, I hope he and Heether can at least get a shot somewhere, if not with Milwaukee.
  9. You could even add #5 pick Kevin Roberts, who was one-half the cost of Salomon Torres.
  10. I remember when Belliard got hurt in August 2001, and I thought that at least Taylor and Lopes would finally take the opportunity to see what Scutaro could do in the bigs. Instead they promoted Luis Lopez to full-time second baseman. It was then I realized they were not the materminds I had been led to believe.
  11. Not saying Jeffress will follow his path, but it's fun to look at Randy Johnson when he was even older than Jeffress is now. Year Team Lg Age Org Lvl W L ERA G GS CG SH GF SV IP H R ER HR BB SO WP H9 HR9 BB9 K9 WHIP 1986 WES FSL 22 Mtl A+ 8 7 3.16 26 26 2 1 0 0 119.2 89 49 42 3 94 133 13 6.7 0.2 7.1 10.0 1.53 1987 JCK Sou 23 Mtl AA 11 8 3.73 25 24 0 0 1 0 140.0 100 63 58 10 128 163 12 6.4 0.6 8.2 10.5 1.63
  12. I think the Mets' struggles in support of Santana have as much to do with the opposing pitchers as anything. In his seven starts Santana has been opposed twice by Florida's Jason Johnson (6th in the NL in ERA) and once each by Aaron Harang (10th), Gallardo (13th), and Derek Lowe (20th). The Mets have also faced (and hit) Scott Olsen once and Chan Ho Park (who held them to one hit in 6 innings) once. A quick look back at Santana's career stats shows that his teams have generally scored about 4.5-5.5 runs/game. Doesn't look to me that he us somehow suppressing his offenses. Edit: When you get older, kids, you too will stop learning the names of new players and will simply substitute older ones. I meant "Josh"--not "Jason"--Johnson.
  13. As the second poster tonight, I'd like to point out that Micah Owings' second most comparable pitcher is former Brewer Mike Birkbeck.
  14. Finally! A reliever to trust to pick up those REALLY tough saves. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BAL/BAL200708221.shtml Edit: Activated link

  16. "Nicolas, Mike 2003-04-23 San Diego -- infamous head case fireballer was dealt to unsuspecting Boston after eight minor league Brewer appearances" Nicolas never actually appeared for a Brewer minor league team, did he? I seem to remember the Brewers flipping him for Bryan Adams awfully quickly. The minor league version of baseball-reference has him appearing for 8 games at Brevard in 2003, but it was then still an Expos affiliate. Whenever I remember Mike Nicolas, I think of the scene from "Slap Shot" in which Strother Martin talks about the player who too-much enjoyed his time in the penalty box.
  17. Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet? Edit: Changed Spandau Ballet singers!
  18. Please tell me that pun was intended.
  19. It's a good day to be an academic. I just cancelled office hours and brought papers home to grade during the game. We'll see how that goes.
  20. I haven't seen a mention of him, so I'll toss in David Riske. He had two huge pick-up saves in games that would have been devastating to lose. First, on opening day, after the team lost a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the ninth, he came on to preserve a 4-3 win in the 10th. Then, after they lost a 1-run lead in the ninth in Los Angeles, he came on in the 10th and K'd Manny Ramirez with the tying run on second. He also carried an ERA under 4 until a couple bad games late in the season.
  21. Catcher's interference always comes back to haunt you.
  22. Hoffpauir slugged .752 at Iowa this year and ops'ed 1.145. Ken Phelps All-Star.
  23. Bench-clearing discussion in the Braves-Phillies game. Any guesses as to which former Brewer pitcher was at the center of it?
  24. Suppan isn't alone. Brett Myers also gave up five runs to the first five batters. And he still hasn't gotten anybody out.
  25. Wow, I don't know if I should be happy that the Braves are rocking Moyer or upset that the Brewers couldn't do anything more against him. Both, I guess. Mets lose, 1-0. I imagine Mets fans are the most desperate/depressed in all of baseball right now, and that is saying an awful lot.
