  1. This is definitely hearsay… It's not hearsay anymore. Flash to Focus on PC Browsing and Mobile Apps; Adobe to More Aggressively Contribute to HTML5
  2. I think it's necessary to make sure that college athletes have enough money to ensure that they're not living as paupers. Consider these limitations: Athletes can't earn more than $2000 during the academic year.Athletes can't accept money unless they're legally or naturally dependent on the benefactor. There are severe restrictions on the type of jobs that athletes can accept, and as NeedMoreFans points out, there are hoops that have to be jumped. And hopefully, once these hoops are jumped, an error isn't made that would cause a violation to be found down the road.
  3. Agreed about the security updates, and as I said before, there is no indication Android phone makers are doing this at a rate worse or better than Apple. Is the research in the article I posted flawed? Wouldn't the lack of a current version also mean the lack of security updates? OS X doesn't necessarily update its version number when a security update is issued, and Windows certainly doesn't. But I thought that both iOS and Android bumped the OS version number with every update. This could be bad for sprint if they don't figure this problem out. I agree, especially with the reported investment that the company made. If I were encountering these network issues, I'd be returning my phone while I could still cancel the contract and get my money back. Since this has turned into kind of a general thread, I'll post this here: Exclusive: Adobe ceases development on mobile browser Flash, refocuses efforts on HTML5 This is definitely hearsay, but if it's confirmed to be true, there'd be a lot of logic behind it, especially since Microsoft has stated that Windows 8 Metro won't be supporting Flash or any other browser plugins. I'd love to see Flash go away; I'd rather not run it on a Mac or PC either.
  4. I think the athletes are probably covered for food; meal plans would be an extension of university housing. They're probably needing ways to pay for clothes, transportation, and (a reasonable amount of) recreation.
  5. I think that athletes should be given a stipend that's equal from athlete to athlete and school to school. As things stand, there's no way for them to get ahold of any cash unless it comes from their parents or grandparents. Heck, I couldn't even pick up an athlete's lunch tab, even if he happened to be someone I knew all my life.
  6. "Community Time" at Brewerfan and LambeauLeap has been changed to reflect Central Standard Time. Note that if you'd like, you can override our Community Time in your account preferences. This is useful if you live outside of Central Time or if you visit Yuku boards that are set for differing time zones. To change your personal time zone setting in an unconverted profile: Hit the Account link in most Navigation bar that appears on most Yuku pages or the wrench icon in newer Navigation bar.Choose the Timezone link in the Settings box at the bottom left.Choose your preferred time from the popup in the "Set Time Zone" box.Check "Convert all time references to your local time" in the "My Time Zone" box.Hit Submit. To change your personal time zone setting in a converted profile: Hit the Account link in most Navigation bar that appears on most Yuku pages or the wrench icon in newer Navigation bar.Choose your preferred time zone from the popup menu.Check "Convert all time references to your local time."Hit the "Save Time Zone" button.Standard time in the lower 48 states: Eastern Standard Time: GMT–5.Central Standard Time: GMT–6.Mountain Standard Time: GMT–7.Pacific Standard Time: GMT–8.

  8. Here's the new location. "Have you ever noticed..." Along with that, we can continue to use the RIP--Andy Rooney for discussion of his life and passing.
  9. You're right. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif You said "iOS5 runs on the 3GS I've heard (though not with all the features)." By the time I posted, I somehow read in "Siri." The point I was trying to make is that not all iOS 5 features are available on every device. I'm fine with that, just like I'm fine with Android-based devices not including every new feature. However, security updates need to be made available expeditiously to those who don't want to root their devices, and they should be made available for all devices that are likely to still be under contract. It'll be interesting to see how well Apple does with the iPhone 3GS. At the point that the 3GS is likely to be discontinued, three years will have elapsed since its release. With two year contracts being required, it'd be reasonable to expect two more years of security updates. I agree that there's no "apparent" reason. Apple hasn't said anything to clue us in. So as you say, it could be to drive 4S sales or to limit network traffic. It could also be that Apple tested Siri on the older devices and wasn't satisfied with its performance on the older hardware. I suppose that the "beta" nature of the software could be part of the equation, too. While there's certainly motivation to drive sales of the 4S, according to Bloomberg analysts Jitendra Waral and Anand Srinivasan, there's plenty of profit to be made on the 4 and 3GS. While not everyone totally agrees on the actual amount of profit, Srinivasan says “The older the iPhone, the better the margin." This would be due to the much lower cost of parts for the devices that have been out for a year or two.
  10. Corey said recently that he lost his speed 20 or 30 pounds ago.
  11. I also was unaware that other teams did not do the "rotating" PBP thing that the Brewers have done until I listened to some games on XM while I was driving cross-country. I always thought what the Brewers did was the "norm." The Brewers didn't do this either until Uecker requested it at some point in the 1990s. Another change that occurred was the use of a color commentator on TV. Before that, the TV broadcasts had two play by play guys. Finally, I'm pretty sure that Pat Hughes takes at least a half inning off (maybe even a full inning) in the 4th or 5th as I've heard some other guy on their radio team for just a very short period of time during the games and then Pat is back for the rest of the game. Cory Provis had that job before coming to Milwaukee. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I believe some pre and postgame responsibilities come along with it.
  12. Rillo would have to be a color guy… Yeah, the Brewers unusual radio setup necessitates two play by play guys. This arrangement was "designed" by Bob Uecker to allow the broadcasters to leave the booth for extended periods during the game. To include a broadcaster who only does color, you need a play by play person in the booth every inning. The traditional model is to have two play by play guys who alternate between play by play and color. Some teams, e.g. the Cubs, pair a play by play person with a color commentator; this doesn't allow for the play by play person to take a break like the Brewers' broadcasters do.

  15. I figure we could have a little contest for bragging rights and guess where the top free agents will go. I was thinking that this topic would be a better fit in the Transaction Rumors / Proposals forum until I saw the "contest" aspect. Does anyone want to play the game? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  16. Maybe we could call Jay either Chief Justice Jay or Governor Jay.
  17. It was the Dodgers' Spanish-speaking announcer who asked about the pronunciation. Anderson said he was embarrassed because checking to get pronunciations correct is part of his job and he failed to do that.
  18. The letter "t" isn't silent in Spanish. I don't remember the details, but part of the explanation was that Cuba has a lot of ethnicity that isn't Spanish. Yuni's first name is Russian, and his last name certainly isn't Spanish. I'd say we're dealing with a mixed bag of pronunciation "rules" that are influenced by a number of different factors.
  19. Note the clarification in reply #7. It's still possible that the Brewers could get picks for K-Rod; declining the option doesn't exclude that possibility. One of two things would have to happen for the Brewers to get picks: K-Rod signs with another team before the date for offering arbyK-Rod signs with another team after the Brewers offer arby
  20. However, most people have been running Gingerbread for months though on their Thunderbolt because its been available all over the internet in very bug free versions. Are you suggesting that the majority of Android users root their devices? Is there data somewhere that shows that? I have a hard time believing that the majority would do that simply because it's like pulling teeth to get a lot of people to apply updates that are handed to them on a silver platter (e.g. updates to OS X, Windows, web browsers, or whatever). I certainly wouldn't expect current devices to be updated with every new feature. For example, you mentioned that Siri doesn't run on an iPhone 3GS. Actually, it doesn't run on an iPhone 4 either. For these devices, I think that iOS 5 falls back on the previous speech recognition technology, which I believe was licensed from Microsoft. If features have to be designed for the least common denominator, progress would be hindered. However, I think it's reasonable to expect security and bug fixes while devices are still under contract. Generally, that would mean two years from the point that a device was discontinued.
  21. I'll post this separately because it deals with stuff that's so much different than the message above. Apparently, Sprint is dumping the availability of unlimited data on all devices except smartphones. That makes me wonder how long unlimited data for smartphones will last. As of now, however, as long as you're in an area that's covered by Sprint's network, data seems to be a good deal. Also, they're telling us that iPhones don't tax the network as much as Android phones. The rationale is that iPhones are more efficient because they're better able to switch users to WiFi when it's available. Of course, what they don't say is that the availability of the iPhone is adding millions to the network that weren't there before. Along with that, internet statistics demonstrate that iPhone users tend to use the 'Net more than users of other smartphones. I'll try to dig out some links for this unless someone else finds them first. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  22. Not true. One of the great things about Android is that you aren't at the mercy of anyone for updates to Android and especially to your Apps. Can you reconcile what you're saying with what's in this article? Android Orphans: Visualizing a Sad History of Support A chart showing the update status of phones released through mid-2010 is provided. Comparisons are made to iOS, but data for Windows, Palm, RIM, etc. aren't provided.
  23. This topic is currently named "Milwaukee Bucks 2011/2012?" due to the fact that it seemed to be time to close last year's thread. However, all the messages seem to be about off-the-court issues affecting the league as a whole. Would it be appropriate to rename this to reflect that it's covering off-the-court issues and start a "Milwaukee Bucks 2011/2012" topic for posts that zero in on the team and its players?
  24. Steve Jobs never had a license plate on his car. Most people just assumed he did that to arrogantly disregard the law. But the truth of the matter is that California law gives residents six months to affix a plate to their cars and Steve would simply lease a new car when the six months were up. His biography mentions the lack of a plate several times, but it doesn't get into the reason he could get away with it. The truth about Steve Jobs' number plate
  25. Mona Simpson, Homer Simpson's mother, is named after novelist Mona Simpson, sister of Steve Jobs. The connection is that the ex-husband of Mona the novelist has written for the show.
