  1. Well, we could make it a discussion of the ring-billed gull, which is probably what the birds scavenging for food were. http://seagrant.wisc.edu/birds/ring-billed_gull_intro.html
  2. We've had the number wrong, but a pay cut rule still applies when a player signs a split contract. He's guaranteed 60% of his previous year's salary (or a maximum cut of 40%). According to Cots: Inferring a little, if you have a player who's earned $50,000 in the minors and $250,000 in the majors, he's going to need to be paid at least $180,000 the following year. For a first year AAA player who gets his first callup in September, the impact is less. Using rough figures, which may be derived form numbers previous to this year, a player might earn $10,750 in the minors and $84,500 in the majors. In a case like that, the $82,700 minimum that logan82 mentions will probably kick in since it's greater than 60% of $95,250.
  3. Drop a foul ball. Good catch. I had forgotten to consider that an error doesn't necessarily cause a batter to reach base.
  4. It's not possible, and it never was. By definition, nobody reaches base in a perfect game. It used to be that a perfect game could end up in a tie, but with recent rule changes, tie games aren't possible anymore.
  5. Here are the MLB perfect game and no-hitter rules… The way I read this, it appears that combined no hitters are still allowed as long as nine innings of pitching is involved. And it would be possible to be on the losing end of a no-hitter.
  6. These are the basic California Highway Patrol lane splitting guidelines: [list-sp] Travel at a speed that is no more than 10 MPH faster than other traffic – danger increases at higher speed differentials. It is not advisable to lane split when traffic flow is at 30 mph or faster --- danger increases as overall speed increases. Typically, it is safer to split between the #1 and #2 lanes than between other lanes. Consider the total environment in which you are splitting, including the width of the lanes, size of surrounding vehicles, as well as roadway, weather, and lighting conditions. Be alert and anticipate possible movements by other road users.[/list-sp] Source: Lane Splitting General Guidelines (pdf) The document goes into significantly more detail than what I listed above.
  7. Yeah, I went through the whole list in the article that CheezWizHed linked to, and there was no example that matched those criteria.
  8. From what I'm reading, the 5/10/15 (or whatever) requirement is a guideline rather than a law. Also, it appears that California doesn't have a law regarding lane splitting. It's allowed because unlike the other 49 states, there's no law that prohibits it. The main safety advantage of lane splitting is that motorcycles are much less likely to be struck from behind. In traffic jam conditions, when cars or trucks are struck from behind, injuries are unlikely. And chances are very good that the vehicles involved won't even be damaged. However, with a motorcycle, the chances injury or damage are high, and fatalities occur. I think a law should exist, although I envision enforcement being difficult. Enforcement would have to be done on by officers on motorcycles that are also lane splitting at high speeds. Or it'd have to be done from the air.
  9. Because there's no value to adding a player to the 60-day DL until the roster spot is needed, there's really no reason to make a move like that proactively.
  10. And where the gift keeps on giving is that the following year, a $400,000 salary becomes a $320,000. After that, the $320,000 would become $256,000.
  11. So… if a starting pitcher loses a game in the top of the tenth inning without giving up a hit, is that still a no-hitter because he's met the 9-inning requirement?
  12. Both of today's lineups are the same as the ones announced last night.
  13. There's always the Yuni warning to go along with low Ks. In his case, there was very low production due to weak contact. Balls in play aren't any good unless there's OBP and/or SLG to back them up. Having said that, I'm still optimistic that Cecchini isn't another Yuni. But I wouldn't zero in on strikeouts as a cause for that optimism.
  14. I'm assuming that since ties can't happen anymore, 82 games at home would only be possible if the team is in the postseason.
  15. The lineups in the lead will be left in place and adjusted tomorrow if necessary.
  16. Because the April 27 game against the Cubs has been postponed and because the pitching matchup will remain the same, we'll update that thread and continue with it. 2016-04-28 Brewers (Jungmann) at Cubs (Arrieta), 1:20 PM CDT These would have been tonight's starting lineups. Brewers SS Jonathan Villar (S) RF Alex Presley (L) LF Ryan Braun ® C Jonathan Lucroy ® 1B Chris Carter ® CF Kirk Nieuwenhuis (L) 3B Aaron Hill ® 2B Yadiel Rivera ® RHP Taylor Jungmann ® Cubs CF Dexter Fowler (S) RF Jason Heyward (L) LF Kris Bryant ® 1B Anthony Rizzo (L) 2B Ben Zobrist (S) 3B Tommy La Stella (L) SS Addison Russell ® C David Ross ® RHP Jake Arrieta ®
  17. Yeah, it looks like tonight's starters will pitch tomorrow. Given that, I think we can continue to use this thread. No word yet on games beyond that.
  18. Was it just an incredibly bad day? I'd have to think so. If he had been doing that in Milwaukee, we'd have been all over him.

  20. I haven't heard anything about Scooter. On the Cubs' side, Miguel Montero was scratched too. In his case, it was due to the cold. I'll update the starting lineups in the lead. EDIT: The lineups have been updated to reflect the late scratches.

  22. Augie 2 is part of the "Brewers Live" pre- and post-game shows. I caught a little bit of him on Sunday. He seemed to be more settled in and comfortable. I can't say I paid a lot of attention, though. Almost everyone spits out similar cliches with the small chance that something unique or interesting will trickle out. As an aside on this, when Jessica Mendoza and Chris Archer were in the booth during last year's Yankees-Astros wildcard game, we got to hear something other than the same old chatter. I agree with FVBrewerFan. The entire Counsell press conference would be a good idea. At least we'd be hearing from a person that's making news instead of the people who are trying to create it.
