  2. I've always felt that a flaw in the bereavement list is that it tops out at 7 days. If a player needs more time, the next logical step would be to put him on the disabled list, which would require him to be out for 15 days. There's a period of 8 days that isn't very flexible. It'd be better and simpler if a player could be placed on the bereavement list for up to 14 days, then moved to the disabled list retroactively if necessary. That would allow the player to come back before 15 days if he's ready. While the restricted list is apparently available, it certainly doesn't look like an ideal option.

  4. We've had this discussion before, but Minnesota promotes the "scissors" technique. Traffic uses both lanes, and vehicles take turns merging at the point of the closure. Apparently, this is much faster and more efficient than moving into a single lane a mile or more before the closure. Of course, drivers need to be educated for this to work. It's no good if only a few people do it; that results in the frustration that homer expressed.
  5. A lot of Madison drivers have merging issues, but it's much more like Patrick's concern. They don't seem to realize that on ramps, drivers are supposed to approach freeway speed. I wonder if some of this is a consequence of the fact that it took over two decades to upgrade the Beltline into a full-fledged freeway. One of my big gripes is when drivers on ramps decide to cross the gore and enter the freeway before they're supposed to. That usurps things for everyone who tries to go by the rules. And it's a real drag that all bets are off when you have to enter or exit via the left lane. The left lane suddenly becomes a slow lane both before and after the ramp, and after entering, it's hard to move over when traffic in the lane to the right is going significantly faster. This isn't the fault of drivers; it's the nature of the beast.
  6. HiAndTight, please make more of an effort to pare back long quoted passages. Repeating five lengthy paragraphs in their entirety simply isn't necessary. I edited your post above to shorten the quoted material. The simplest solution would be to use a hard number for Super Two, such as 425 or 430 days, while retaining the 86 day requirement for the season just completed. I'd have to think that such an obvious setup would have been considered and that it was probably rejected. A hard number would give owners the ability to ensure that few if any players achieve Super Two at all. I wouldn't reject Super Two out of hand. My guess is that initially, players wanted arby after two seasons and that owners wanted it after three. This would have been the compromise. Back on topic, if Nelson can help the team, he should be brought up regardless of Super Two. If he's paid more down the road, it should be considered the cost of doing business in a season where the team stands a good chance to win a championship. The one thing I'd object to is losing Estrada entirely. He needs to be kept around as depth until he can be replaced during the off-season.
  7. … Based on your explanation, the 86 days would be relevant next year as that would be the year immediately preceding his potential super 2 status. … "Prior season" means the season that was just completed. Using this terminology, in October of this year, the 2014 season becomes the prior season. The 86 games in the season just completed and total service time have nothing to do with each other. The player must meet both requirements to qualify for Super Two.

  9. Tonight's Channel 58 news displayed a map that placed Rochester, Minnesota in Iowa, just west of Dubuque. That reminds me of a Microsoft presentation a couple of years ago where they used a map that put Denver in the middle of Wyoming. It also bugs me that "Dubuque" isn't in Firefox's spell checker.
  10. Didn't we have a situation earlier this year where our releaver only had 8 pitches to 'warm up' on the mound? I can't recall the game or situation tho.... Roenicke failed to have a reliever warmed up when Brandon Kintzler was removed from the game, and Will Smith was restricted to 8 warm-up pitches. The coaches who normally would have handled this (Rick Kranitz and Lee Tunnell) were attending a graduations, and minor league pitching coordinator Rick Tomlin was filling in as pitching coach.
  11. Yeah, Sophia was referring to something happening around Burleigh Street and Sherman Boulevard. She was reading a script written by someone else. It's not a sin to get it wrong if you're not from town. However, a local reporter needs to get it right. I remember the days when Channel 58 first started having news and the reporters couldn't pronounce the names of Milwaukee suburbs. That was pretty bad.
  12. I was at home. I recall getting a phone call telling me to turn on the TV.
  13. Sophia just mispronounced "Burleigh." Given that she's been with the team for a couple of years, that's something she ought to be getting right. For those who aren't from the area, the first vowel in the second syllable is silent and the second one is pronounced. That's characteristic of words of German origin.

  15. Just now, for about a minute, I experienced a situation where I couldn't access pages at all. After that, everything started working happily again. Is this the kind of slowness you're talking about, or are you finding that the site drags for you most of the time?
