  1. ...and the Twins are up by about 10,000 fans per game over 2009, so they certainly are not accounting for a 1% decrease. http://espn.go.com/mlb/attendance/_/year/2009
  2. Piggly Wiggly seems strange to me too. They seem to sponsor a lot of stuff, but their stores are almost entirely in small towns, far away from the stadiums. Well, there are fans that live far from stadiums and they buy groceries. According to shopthepig.com, they do have 20 stores in Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee, Washington, and Racine Counties.
  3. Judging by the relative pricing of the tickets, Pittsburgers are bigger fans of the club level at PNC park, than Milwaukeans are of the PNC club level at Miller park (PNC park club level tickets were priced higher than our seats 3 rows behind the Brewers dugout at PNC park). So maybe their fans will sit on that level, when they come here.
  4. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/99984234.html Is it possible that going this route...quoting rules, complaining to the league, etc. is perceived by the umpires as criticizing them and therefore they have adopted an alternate idea: a Brewer pitcher hitting a batter anywhere should be deemed “more likely than not” intentional and result in ejection?
  5. What about if the fine went to the union? Any fines should also probably be based on the players salary...maybe one games pay for each head shot. That'd be about $2500 at the league minimum and maybe up to $150K for the highest paid pitchers.
  6. Perhaps the reason Melvin only mentions calls he is receiving or not receiving and not any calls he may be making is he does not want his players reading things like: Melvin said "I've called all 29 teams shopping Bush, but none of them would offer more than a bag of balls in exchange, and that" in the newspaper.
  7. I don't really think the no trades was due to being in contention, it was due to not being offered enough to give up players who are not free agents until the end of next season. They have no players, with significant value to contending teams, who are free agents at the end of this season. There was no reason to trade Hart and/or Fielder unless an outstanding offer were made. Fielder and Hart do not even have to be traded in the off-season or even at next year's deadline, if they are not offered enough in return they can take draft picks. everyday that passes is just one less day you have them under contract. in theory their value decreases by the day Well, take that theory to it's logical conclusion and they ought to trade Braun, Weeks, Axford, Braddock, and Gallardo as their value decreases every day, as well.
  8. They only have 5 games remaining with the Cardinals, but they do have 12 against Cincinnati. So they could do a lot on their own to catch the Reds (not that I expect they will), but not all that much with the Cardinals.
  9. and what I was thinking of...the batter reaching first, is only a factor if that is the third out: A run is not scored if the runner advances to home base during a play in which the third out is made (1) by the batter-runner before he touches first base from rule 4.09
  10. I thought if the batter did not reach first there would be no run. A run can not score on an inning ending conventional double play, for example.
  11. It looked to me like he finally stopped when the umpire told him to.
  12. Why does Fischer still have a job as a 3rd base coach...he has been terrible forever.
  13. Yes and Atlanta is more humid than Dallas and so likely just as uncomfortable. St. Louis can be very hot and humid in the summer, as well. Miller park with the roof closed on a warm humid day is also very uncomfortable...but this does not seem to have much impact on attendance. Here, as most places, it is all about how the team has done recently.
  14. Actually it appears to be the Padres that are paired with Seattle...just as odd, though. http://en.wikipedia.org/w...ay#Geographical_matchups http://mlb.mlb.com/news/a...s_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb Also Arizona is actually in the mountain time zone, but apparently does not do daylight savings time, so that is why they are on West Coast time in summer. http://www.timetemperature.com/tzus/time_zone.shtml
  15. Thanks for the definition, but I was just making fun of something Bill Schroeder says all the time.
  16. You mean "still in all" (or is it "still and all"), don't you? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  17. Watching the team was painful, Sutton, like Matt V before him, made the broadcasts tolerable. BA is okay, but not entertaining enough to cover for the poor product on the field. Bill is just tiresome, he has been saying the same things over and over and over again for how many years now? He needs to retire. I was disappointed when they extended him a few years ago. Plus it sounded like they even gave him a lot of say over who to hire this time...I bet he did not like working with Matt V. or Sutton.
  18. I don't think it is very common (or sensible) to base decisions on veteran players on their performance in spring training.
  19. Well, the Brewers decided that he had no value...or, anyway, less than Chris Smith.
  20. Except errors do not separate obviously bad plays from borderline plays. They separate certain misplays from certain other misplays, the classification often has little to do with that. In addition, calling errors is subject to the whims of the official scorer. The play yesterday basically consisted of the Cubs two outfielders both standing there expecting the other one would catch the ball, it was clearly a very, very poor play. Either of them could easily have caught the ball, but no error.
  21. But I think you are still missing the point that a pitcher can be forced to get 4 outs in an inning, even when there are no "errors". How about yesterday when an easy fly ball fell between 2 cub outfielders...no error, therefore any runs count as earned. Yet this was just as much bad defense putting extra pressure on the pitcher as an official "error" would be. There are a lot of bad defensive plays that do not count as errors. This is why I agreed that the distinction between earned and unearned runs is probably largely "luck"...because it is just sort of random chance and arbitrary rules (ie. blowing a double play is never an error) that determine if the bad defensive plays are declared to be errors or not.
  22. That will be disgusting, if it goes that way. Not only will the Brewers be paying to help them win the division this year, we already (over) paid Suppan for what he did for them in previous seasons.
  23. I don't see how it makes sense to say that the pitcher bears no responsibility for allowing home runs and other hits in an inning just because an error occurred on a previous play. Was Bush not trying to get those guys out and did he not fail to do so? In comparing Bush and Narveson, the biggest differences (besides ERA) appear to be HR, strikeouts, and opponents SLG...all of which favor Narveson. Considering all that, I'd say Narveson appears to have been a more successful pitcher than Bush so far this season.
  24. I think that is the point that bad defense can result in earned runs as well as unearned, so to some extent is is just luck whether the extra runs due to poor defense are recorded as "earned" or not.
  25. Yes, but reading them both it is like (exaggerating a bit) Covey says: "who are the Brewers, never heard of them" while the team says: "We're like family". No big deal, just seemed kind of funny.
