  1. Yes, they can do that, whether they paid anything or not. The fact that they can do it does not mean that they should do it, in this specific case of Geoff Jenkins return. The ability to boo also does not mean that they are not clueless if they boo Geoff Jenkins. Anyone at Miller Park who gives the same greeting to Gary Sheffield and to Geoff Jenkins is, in fact, clueless.
  2. It seems foolish to not put the best possible defense out there, even if (horrors) it does mean moving Hart between RF and center.
  3. Yes, if Parra continues pitching well, it would be absolute lunacy to send him down just because he is the only guy that can be sent down and we don't want to give away Seth McClung. It seems some here still think the future is more important than the present. The Brewers will/should do whatever they believe gives them the best chance of winning now. It seems pretty clear to me that this would be sending either Bush or Villanueva to the pen, this gives them a long reliever that can also step in and start in case of injury, doubleheaders, or to give Gallardo or Parra a rest from time to time. Given that, it seems likely that McClung is gone (or demoted) one way or another. The other possibility I can see is Turnbow being traded, if they can get something of value for him.
  4. In trying to find out if that is the case, I discovered that we are apparently getting a new director, so maybe the situation is he was already under contract for basketball. http://sportstvinsideout.blogspot.com/2007/11/grass-is-always-greener-except-when-its.html Mitch Riggin, who spent the past few years directing Milwaukee Brewers games for FSN North - WI, is trading beer & brats for Cactus Cooler & Coppertone. FSN Arizona has hired the former TD to direct Arizona Diamondbacks games for the 2008 season.
  5. Yeah, but the NBA deserves to be ignored. It must be pretty sad for whatever NBA fans there are in this area, though. The Bucks even only got their arena because of the dreams of a Hockey fan.
  6. Yes, this is one thing that I lost when I became a Brewer fan after living in WI for 10 years (I was previously a Cub fan). It would be nice if Milwaukee were a place where baseball comes first or at least if it meant more to more people. But at least now it is much better than a few years ago...people who had never mentioned baseball before, randomly brought up the Brewers during last season. I think many in the state would consider me a girlie man, as I don't hunt, fish, watch NASCAR, or drive a truck/SUV and am only a casual Packer fan. http://forum.mazda6club.com/style_emoticons/default/76.gif
  7. I don't know about that, it seems like they do the opposite most of the time. Why have all these 1982 WS loser bobblehead give-aways on Friday nights, for example? It seems like more of the promotions are Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays rather than on the less desirable nights/days. It seems to me it would make more sense to have almost all the promotions on Mon-Thurs and maybe also Packer Sundays.
  8. Yost was a good manager when the goal was developing players. He is still managing as if that is the goal. That is why he is no longer the right man for the job. He also seems to have cracked under the pressure of a pennant race.
  9. Well, it was Aquino throwing the last pitches that had the potential to matter. Amazing...sure the team was down 3 runs with little chance...but how in the world do you not have your best pitcher out there for that last inning? Interestingly the night before Cordero was used, even though they were losing by 4 in the ninth.
  10. I like the idea of putting some of the surplus starters, whoever they may be, in the bullpen. Why not have, say, 2-3 guys in the pen who can pitch 2-3 innings two or three times a week?
  11. Right.....because nobody has ever been fired after being given a vote of confidence. Especially when immidiately following that show of support, they promptly act like such an ass that they are only allowed to manage 1 full game out of 5 in the midst of a pennant race. Of course Mark A. was going to say "he's fine," or whatever it was he mumbled when he was put on the spot. He's smart enough not to say/do something stupid that would cause a major distraction during the last week of the season. Unfortunately, not everybody was blessed with that kind of mental capacity... If he does go, it would be a bonus that one of the pathetic J-S excuses for a reporter has said that this "Ned is fine" means Ned is certain to be retained. Is this reporter dumb enough to think that Mark A is going to say something like "I'm thinking of firing Ned" or even "Ned may or may not be back next year, that decision will be made after the season ends"? I wonder if Chicago reporters were running around looking for anything that would allow them to say Dusty Baker would be back, just so they could show up all the dumb manager wannabees on those interwebs. Another possibility would be Yost resigning because of a nervous breakdown (or to avoid the possibility of one in the future).
  12. I don't think Hall getting his belt nicked (or whatever) called for any action by the umpires. But I do think that given what had happened the night before they should have maybe issued a warning right away. Then if they still hit Prince there would be ejections. I could be wrong, but I think they also have the option to eject the pitcher for hitting a batter intentionally, even if there were no warning given. I don't think I have ever seen that actually happen, but they could have ejected the Cardinals pitcher for hitting Prince.
  13. If you really don't believe this was intentional, I think you must believe that there never has been a batter intentionally hit in the history of baseball. The most telling thing to me was both McClung and Yost left without a peep of protest. This is the same Yost that has been on the warpath with the umpires recently.
  14. I am not so sure there is anyone in category 1? This is the "Ned Yost Yay or Nay thread" not "Players Yay or Nay". In order to not be assumed to be in category 1, is one expected to include "of course, the players failed to get the job done" every time one criticizes a Yost move in a thread about Yost?
  15. I blame the fans...a subset of fans. Those who still want to celebrate losing the World Series in 1982, which led to the team forcing the players to wear retro uniforms for Friday home games.
  16. That's fine...I disagree that Pujols was going to be pitched around with no one on in a close game. But even conceding that there are still the issues with Yost's subsequent decisions (assuming they were his and not Sveum's and Maddux's). Turnbow often does not do well when he comes in with men on base. After Turnbow walked two, he was still left in to continue with his obvious inability to find the strike zone, despite the fact that he has been having problems in high pressure situations. Cordero has not been used since Saturday and with so few games remaining there was no reason not to use him to keep the game close...certainly with the bases loaded, he could have been brought in to get the last 4 outs.
  17. There are whispers of clubhouse discord, particularly among the Milwaukee veterans, over Yost's frequent lineup changes and penchant for riding the hot hand. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=crasnick_jerry&id=3035426
  18. Well, if he were not happy about about it, he would not and should not complain to reporters about it.
  19. Partial Retraction...apparently it was Counsell not Yost that decided to bunt with two strikes: Counsell said. "I thought that was the best way to get the run in. I had a chance to do it. I just didn't get it done. With Mel running so good, you get a bunt down, he's going to score. That was kind of my thinking." Yost had no problem with Counsell's call. "Counsell is a polished, Major League, professional player," Yost said. Brewers fall back with loss in 11th So that one was a dumb move on Counsell's part.
  20. And most likely that is, unfortunately, where he will end the season. Even if he does start one more, he'll be at 188 or 189 innings vs. the desired limit of 180. This precaution of limiting innings is surely not that precise a science. On the outside chance that the Brewers still make the playoffs, I'm pretty sure Gallardo will be on the post season roster and pitch as much as is needed.
  21. I think it is pretty certain that Yost did make that call (what makes you think he didn't?) and it was an idiotic one, just like having Hall try to bunt with two strikes earlier in the game. These are the sort of decisions that make me question his judgement most. Things like pinch hitting one guy for another, putting in one pitcher vs. another, putting in defensive subs or not, ... are things there can usually be reaonable disagreement on. As I posted before I don't believe I have ever (in 38 years of watching baseball) seen a position player attempt to bunt with two strikes before. Has anyone seen this done by any manager other than Yost?
  22. Certainly the players made their mistakes today and lost the game, but I don't know that I have ever seen another manager have a position player bunt with two strikes. Ned did it twice today and didn't he have Hardy do it in another game? It is just bizarre that he can think this is a good idea.
  23. I agree on the Cub announcers...another one today was when Lee got doubled off first on a pop-up and they said it looked like he was faked out by (I think) the second baseman...instead of just saying it was bad base running. But then, they know what happened to Steve Stone.
  24. I assume Bill S. has never been asked to do this, which also says something...
  25. I assume that was in response to: If so, 65% is actually surprisingly low. But, in any case, the question is what were Cordero's chances vs. Matt Wise's with that winning run on 3rd. Since odds were the game was going to be lost, it was most likely the last inning and it no longer made any sense at all to save Cordero at that point...even if it did at the start of the inning.
