  1. I'm a (kind of lapsed, unfortunately) Boston Cares member. They have versions all over the country though. Basically, it's one-off volunteering. You can sign up for as many or as few hours as you like and you're not obligated to do the same thing every time, though you can if you'd like. You can find your local affiliate here. I served brunch at an AIDS outreach facility, participated in a program that sends books to prisoners, and played Scrabble at an assisted living center, just to give you an idea of the variety of projects. (I'm not lapsed because I didn't enjoy it; mostly it's time and the stuff that piques my interest isn't nearby and I don't have a car.) But if you don't know what you want to do, it's a good way to try things out on your own schedule.
  2. Sadly, the cab to his place would have been comparable to the locksmith bill. Never a dull moment!
  3. So last night, my gentleman friend took me out for a belated birthday dinner. We got all dressed up and went to a steakhouse and it was just a really wonderful time. I'd begged my roommate to stay at her boyfriend's so we had the whole place to ourselves. We were in the cab coming back to watch the Sox game when it hit me: I'd put my wallet and my lipstick and my subway pass in my small purse but not my keys. The going rate for a locksmith in Boston at 8:30 on a Saturday night? $220. Christ amighty.
  4. I'm heading to Fenway for the last regular season game in my Brewerfan Just Brew It shirt and Milwaukee cap. Doesn't get better than that.
  5. My roommate just ran out and bought a bottle of champagne. BECAUSE WE'RE GOING TO THE PLAYOFFS!!!!!!!!!!!11
  6. We're going to the playoffs!!!! Were going to the playoffs!!!!!!!

  8. I was actually thinking this too!
  9. I think this bullpen by committee thing is worse than starting Zambrano -- no one's getting to see the same pitcher for a second time.

  11. Why are you frying already cooked shrimp, Jerry?!

  15. I actually just went into the garbage can for the bag of fortune cookies my roommate threw out last night. "Every production of genius must be the production of enthusiasm."
  16. I haven't been a Brewer fan for nearly as long as a lot of you -- not that there's a test you have to take to post in this thread or anything (at least I hope not). But what I feel right now is surprised by how much this team has come to mean to me. What started four seasons ago as a diversion, as a chance to enjoy baseball in a different way has brought me so much joy and anguish. It's crazy to me that after today (or Monday), the one of the Mets or Brewers fans will have to relive the pain of coming so close and letting it slip away for a second season in a row. My best friend is a Mets fan and he's going crazy and in any other case, I'd be rooting for them for his sake. But not today (or Monday). Right now, I'm nervous and terrified and immensely glad that this year during the last weekend of the season, the team we love is playing for something more than a winning season. And I'm thankful that y'all have let me join your party. This is a great board filled with great people who deserve to know what it feels like to see their team in the playoffs.
  17. The bruises you get from falling down a marble staircase are really quite something.
  18. Sometimes I can't close gameday after really good wins. Like I'm afraid they'll take it away if I stop looking at the word "final." This is one of those times.
  19. I work with a crazy person. I have to work closely with her. She has informed me that I need to go online less -- twice in a week (and I definitely have been much more vigilant about it). She's not my supervisor. I'm getting my work done. We're very slow right now. We'd had a conversation about the slowness of work not long ago and I mentioned that I'd be happy to help with anything I could. I'm not doing anything inappropriate. I've only been there four months. It's really too soon to hate my job already.
  20. I really want to be positive and say that they're getting the suck out of the system for an end-of-the-season tear. I really want to.
  21. Getting one hit by an (alleged) wife-beater. Awesome. I remember getting deliriously happy over a 4 1/2 game wild card lead...
  22. Do y'all ever worry about the people who wear the big fleece jackets and scarves when the temperature drops below 65 for the first time in the fall? Like, pace yourselves! Also, there are few things grosser to listen to than someone eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
  23. Jogging has really helped me get into shape. It's free (aside from the shoes, which you can't really scrimp on) and you can make tangible goals and progressions. I started running for real in May. I was not good at it. It was hard. Now I'm trying to run a 10K in October. It's still hard and I'm still not that good, but I've found it much easier to stick with than other workout programs because there's something to run for. There's always a personal record to break or a new distance to try to run. Depending on where you live, you can run different routes to change it up. Signing up for local road races is an awesome way to keep yourself motivated too.
  24. Genius. I would totally buy this when/if I get married. Snuggling is nice at first until you wake up at 3 am all gross and sweaty. Whoever does marry me will be pleasantly surprised on the reduction in home heating costs....
