  1. After he was DFA'ed, he made 2 starts for Pawtucket. I think the whole plan for him all along was to stretch him out, and see if any team wanted him as a starter, since that's what he's done for most of his career.
  2. Cardinals acquired RHP Joel Pineiro and cash considerations from the Red Sox for a player to be named later. Obviously not a blockbuster, but the Cardinals aren't laying down at all. Maybe Pineiro solves some of their starting pitching woes. EDIT: Added the trade icon to the thread.
  3. According to scout.com, Byrnes is highly unlikely to remain with the DBacks after this year. Contract talks have broken off, and won't be resumed until after the season is finished. They're currently listening to offers for him. He'd make a fine addition to the Brewers in LF for next year! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  4. That would work for me. Not giving up any major parts for Gagne and a guy the Brewers can stick in AAA would be perfect.
  5. Anytime you take Beltran out of that lineup, you instantly have a better chance at winning. Not only that, he's got a fantastic glove in center. Milledge, not so much.
  6. When used correctly, the Menchkins platoon in left has been very successful. Jenkins has an 800+ OPS against righties, and Mench has a 900+ OPS against lefties. Even though Geoff has completely gone down the tubes as the season has gone on, he's still over 800. Disappointments? How about Weeks, Gabe Gross, and Capuano. Gabe was fantastic off the bench last season, but has been a black hole this year. Weeks is starting to make me wonder why he had the "can't miss" prospect label; he really hasn't shown much of anything with the Brewers. That wrist is such a thorn in the side. And Capuano has been mediocre to say the least.
  7. I'd say he's most like Garrison. A decent prospect, but certainly not near the top of the Yankees' pitching prospect list. What I find odd is that the Yankees and Red Sox, who always appear to give up whatever prospects necessary to require a big name player, have been incredibly protective of their players thus far. The Sox were probably the team in the lead for Dye, but they refused to give up anyone of value. Now there's a rumor that they'd give up David Murphy and Kason Gabbard for Gagne, which would be trading 2 players that don't have a big future with the Sox. Same thing for the Yanks; refusing to give up any pitching prospect. They even have Brett Gardner off limits. Anyways, I can't wait to see how today unfolds. Should be interesting as always.
  8. I'm flabbergasted that the A's turned down the proposed deal the Dodgers offered for Blanton. The Dodgers offered Andy LaRoche, Jonathan Meloan (the next Papelbon in my opinion), and one more minor league pitcher, all for a durable innings eater with not much upside. Is that what it's going to take to get a pitcher like that? You're forfeiting your whole future for a guy like Blanton, which is bad no matter how you look at it. If Kershaw was part of the deal and the A's still balked, Billy Beane must be out of his mind. Kershaw is the minors' top lefty pitching prospect.
  9. Good call on Laird. We have to believe he's expendable at this point with the addition of Salty, but I believe he's a pre-arby guy, so it would be tough to pry him away. He's a good defender with a decent bat, and even has a little speed (4SB). The Rangers are suddenly loaded with catching talent (Laird, Salty, Max Ramirez from the Lofton deal, Taylor Teagarden), so maybe Laird is available. I know there's been talks about him going to the Cubs for Pie, but supposedly that was a 100% false rumor.
  10. I've been mulling this over for awhile now. While I don't think the Brewers will make a serious move for Gagne, I wonder how Texas would like a Turnbow/Gwynn combo for him. Maybe add a lesser pitching prospect as well (Derek Miller?) As well as Parra has been throwing, I keep thinking he'll be used as trade bait one of these days, given his injury history. Kenny Williams supposedly loves him and Turnbow, but that's a different topic. Anyways, Gagne would certainly be a welcome addition to the club, that's for sure. The bullpen, which I believe is the biggest strength of this team, would be even better with Gagne. If a deal gets done, good, but if not, oh well. I trust Doug to make the right move.
