  1. Good time for Morgan to actually take ball four. Especially since he swung at one earlier in the count.
  2. I agree and given that both Green and Gamel are lefties Casey could make a lot of sense as your back-up at both positions.
  3. I'm all for Green and Gamel, but I'm not sure Gindl replacing Hart is the best bet. Gindl's OPS is quite consistent over the years, though it did take a dip in Huntsville. I just can't honestly say that I think he'll hit better than Hart, and show enough power. That same equivalency calculator only gives a .259/ .327/ .387 slash line for Gindl. I think he'd probably do better than that. Interestingly enough based on this years performances Gamel + Reyes, actually looks better than Fielder + Betancourt. Hard to say exactly how free agency will shakeout, but I don't think the Brewers need to free up Hart's salary to potentially afford Reyes. The fielding difference from those 3 wouldn't be Earth shattering, but it would certainly help, and I like having a guy or two at the end of the bench with a particular tactical skill set over reliever's that pitch an inning every two weeks.
  4. I hope this game doesn't get rained out, it's actually on Fox in the Twin Cities
  5. Careful the Giants might just offer those guys all contracts to come out of retirement and spark their offense.
  6. The problem with building through FA is that in any given offseason there are only usually a couple of top shelf talents. Under ideal conditions you could find some shrewd league average filler, and break the bank 2 years in a row grabbing an elite position player and starting pitcher. At which point your roster looks about as good as the Brewers. The trick is hitting the jackpot two years in a row on the right starters, and convincing those position player to play for you. We talk about the Yankees, Red Sox, and Phillies but in each case the team was really built in a much more comprehensive fashion. building depth through the draft and trades, at which point FA becomes a lot more predictable. They usually have one need or so per year, and just go out and grab the best. It's a great way to stay dominant if you have the money, but I can't think of a single team that has truly built itself that way. Keep in mind the roots of the Yankees success were those great prospects from the early to mid 90's. Without those guys the Yankees would have been supper expensive wild card contenders instead of playoff locks.
  7. I like Gindl a ton, but I also get the limited ceiling from a scouting stand point. I can't really think of a good comparison for him as an OF. If he had the speed to play CF, was say 4 inches taller, or played middle infield he'd be an easy top 100 prospect just based on his success and age.
  8. I tried to brainstorm, and Austin Ross came to mind as the kind of guy you might deal in this situation.
  9. If the Brewers can get useful bullpen performance out of Rogers that is a big victory at this point. Why would we expect him to be healthy at this point? I'm happy to be proven wrong, but I can't really rationally expect something different at this point.
  10. I definitely think about getting Peralta some bullpen work in Sept. Not that I want to load a potential playoff roster with bullpen guys, but on the face of it I'd rather have Peralta bring the heat as the last guy in the pen over say Dillard.
  11. It would be nice to have someone who could play in the field more, but he's a veteran can pinch hit with serious power and way more useful than a whole bunch of guys at the end of our roster. Heaven forbid we make it to the World Series he'd be an obvious DH as well to help even that out. Since they don't seem comfortable trying to see if Green or Gamel can hit enough off the bench this is the next best option in my mind.
  12. It could be interesting, but there is something to be sad for having Martin in AAA with options if a catcher gets hurt. The flipside is being able to have a guy on the bench with that defensive skill set.
  13. I suppose at this point one could imagine Martin challenging Kottaras for the back-up spot next year?
  14. A solid lefty reliever, and a lefty power pinch hitter would be great (Thome is perfect).
  15. The Cards went 15-10 over that stretch, so that would have to be frustrating to play pretty solid ball, and still fall 6 back.
  16. Those get you out of a jam real quick, although ironically enough after all the years of Ueck making that joke he didn't say it when they actually pulled it off.
  17. Time of year also makes a difference. A call-up at this point would lose two weeks of regular playing time. For a guy who has shown he owns the league all year that is hardly an issue. As others have pointed out Gamel's 'struggle' is still better than a whole bunch of what we have right now.
  18. Is that his ceiling? I've been pretty happy with T-plush and Gomez in his role. However Morgan's hitting his really been driven by a much higher batting average than the rest of his career, so when combined with the lack of walks he is unfortunately a guy I can see the helium coming out of next year.
  19. If he is likely limited to a bullpen guy I'd be against signing him actually. We already have pretty good depth and signing him is likely to increase the chances of a dumb roster decision because of his name recognition.
  20. to AAA. First off I'm petitioning to officially change Logan's middle name to 'Gamer' so he can fit in with the other killer G's. I'm open to other G suggestions. Second how do we rate him in at this point? Green, Gindl, and Gamel frankly all have doe enough with the bat for long enough that they have fairly established narratives and profiles. Green is the return from injury guy, Gamel is the Ken Phelps All-star dejour, and Gindl is the guy you think can't make it who just keeps hitting. Logan on the other hand I really didn't have back on my radar as his AA numbers at first glance weren't all that exciting. Well now he's up over 100 PAs at AAA with no evidence that his hot streak is over. I wonder if AA is really hurting the power numbers this year? Logan's clearly shown he can hit for average, make pretty good contact, and keep a solid BB rate. Is his defense still as good as earlier in his career? Clearly there's not a huge immediate need for him next year, but it kind of matters whether he's destined to be another potentially acceptable CFer (which is certainly valuable) or if he can push that to an all around .850 OPS guy with defense?
  21. The .500 thing is the trick in my opinion. Even good teams can hit the skids for a couple of weeks, and that to me at least is a bigger danger than the Cards playing crazy hot over the last month and a half.
  22. I don't remember how the injury rules work for playoff rosters, but I'd love to see a scenario where Green and Gamel can get some time in September and at least have a chance to earn some post season starts if they hit.
  23. There's also a fair amount of perceptual reinforcement with everything is going your way leading to everything going your way (at least as you remember it). Take for example Rodriguez's hit last night, I can easily imagine a scenario where on a worse team with a closer game to begin with his "foolishly" running out the ground ball leads to our best relief pitcher not being around in the 9th to close it out.
  24. Seconding the lameness of getting the Yankees.
