  1. Green ahead of Weeks in the lineup is rather interesting as well. It would be nice if Green had a game to try and force the issue for more PT a 3-3 with a HR, 2B and a BB sort of thing.
  2. Semmelhack. What a name. Semmelhacks 3-0.
  3. I do like getting a guy with one really big and important tool in round 5.
  4. He is Magnifico and the camera loves him.
  5. The tools question gets tricky because there are a variety of other things to consider. Clearly we could use more middle infield prospects. I'm less convinced we have a big need for CFs. Balanced against the positional question you want some high risk athletes to give you a shot at those all round super star players. Developing those guys seems very random however, and it is nice to have a supply of useful parts. The danger though if you are not drafting high in the first round is that your farm system isn't producing any of the All-star level guys you need to be a playoff contender. You don't need many if the roster is deep but you need some every few years to pan out.
  6. If one is going to make an allotment to the human element with relievers I think it makes far more sense to think about traits for guys who can come in mid inning and clean-up someone else's mess vs. guys who do better to start an inning. A lot of your throwers are better off with a fresh inning because they can come in wild and walk a guy before locking in. Doing that mid inning when you already have guys on base though is a huge issue. Similarly things like ability to hold runners on can be more of an issue mid inning. The numbers do seem to suggest that the 9th only pattern is not terribly far off the highest leverage use possible, so it is not a horrible strategy. That said I'd wager if you went to a bullpen filled with real men who come in and pitch it would be far easier to distribute the workload and with a solid rotation might let you drop a reliever in favor of a bench guy, which could be a bigger advantage than the modest increase in reliever leverage.
  7. Or we completely created the 9th inning mentality out of thin air and the hardest outs are against the middle of the order.
  8. I think some of it is just novelty at this point. We've had some OK (Lucroy) to bad defenders for quite some time, so a defensive whiz is kind of exciting, but considering Lucroy is pretty strong at framing and OK to slightly above in others Martin would have to hit pretty well to take a lot of time away. There is a solid argument that he and Kottaras offer similar value, and trying to swap one of them for something else is solid, but you would probably want to figure out how to get another power threat off the bench if that is the case.
  9. I'd prefer not to trade Gindl, this is really the only time he has struggled in his career and last not not withstanding he seems to have rediscovered his stroke. I suspect that Gindl has a better than normal chance of continuing to out perform his scouting ceiling. Would Rogers be of interest returning to the northeast? All things being equal we have more pitchers that we can afford to deal some of the less reliable bodies than position players at the moment.
  10. Quality middle relief isn't what you hope for obviously with a top half of the 1st round draft pick, but considering he was probably on pace to be the biggest draft bust in Brewers history that would be a victory in my book.
  11. It is certainly too early to be definitive, but if one looks at Morgans career line his power output this year is a lot closer to normal for him than last year. The batting average and walk ability are generally respectable, but with the power reaching Tony Gwynn Jr. levels he seems very replaceable for next year at this point. Maybe he gets hot, but I'd bet he gets released unless the other young depth behind him vanishes.
  12. You always have guys that get away, but that 2005 draft could have been the equivalent of that famous Steeler draft that built their dynasty.
  13. If I may make some counter arguments to the draft pick issue. That bubbled up a couple of years ago as a significant factor, but I think they actually helped in part to suppress the trade market for awhile when every GM and the uncle started overvaluing all prospects merely because they were cheap. I think the impact of the second wild card on really keeping teams out of seller mode is going to be the most profound. You are getting down to such a small pool of teams that prices will rise back up, and I think in part the simplicity of the process and not having to guesstimate whether a guy will be type A and/or if he will resign and or take arby... Perhaps the bigger danger down the road could be if teams stop going for it because of the extra wild card and are more content to sit around with middle of the road teams for longer periods of time. I think by having it be a play-in game you cut down on that risk, and keep a pretty good motivation for team to win the divisions.
  14. If I may simplify the trade strategy, get the best players available besides LF and Catcher. Time under team control is a factor worth considering, but most important in my mind is getting the best players we can find. The current farm system is deep enough to help fill in the cracks, so to speak around premium talent we are just short on premium talent.
  15. Not to overly deflate things, but it is worth remembering the careers of guys like Russel Martin and a number of other catchers that explode with a big offensive year or two and then drop back down to more regular looking numbers. It's not a guarantee that will happen with Lucroy, but it is a reasonable possibility and many of those other guys got paid based on the big year more so than the numbers they put up the bulk of their careers.
  16. Vinny's Beloit season was quite special. I really thought he was going to catch on as the near perfect bench player. Very versatile and a bat that wouldn't really play at the corners well as a starter, but was still respectable. And for a bench player he was patient enough to not get exposed as a free swinger, but generally liked to swing and hit for average. Last fun fact Vinny's RBI total might belong up there in the pantheon of great one-offs. Despite being fairly consistent throughout his career with the slash line he has only had 1 other seasons were he passed half way to that 124 RBI total! 70 RBI's in 2010 is his next highest total.
  17. Couple of multi hit games in a row for Gindl, here's to him continuing to work his way out of the slump. I still want to see more from Arnett before I get too excited.
  18. I've made the argument before, but those late 90's teams actually could have made some playoff runs if the rotation had been more than a collection of #7 starters.
  19. Perhaps the bigger thing in my mind about Loretta is that given his very modest power he really got stuck early in his career behind Valentin and Vina. In the mid '90's he didn't look all that exciting as a SS prospect, but even if you adjust for different era he looks pretty good as a SS. And we'd certainly take him in a heart beat now. I'd guesstimate he could have broken 2000 hits if he hadn't been splitting time, so much early on.
  20. While there have been some good criticisms made, it is worth pointing out that Cruz was also widely viewed as a player who could turn into a AAAA player in a heart beat. I wouldn't be surprised that had he been traded to a different organization that is exactly what happens to him. Let alone the legion of other high K, mediocre walk rate and BA late bloomers. One could view it as the inverse of the Sabbathia trade. For all the world LaPorta should have been at least a serviceable corner man, but has essentially washed out. Presumably the team should have a little more info on these guys than we do, but that is no guarantee every single time of how things will turn out.
  21. At the start of the season I'd have put Hart high on the to trade list in this situation. Gamel's injury combined with Gindl's terrible start really makes it hard to envision an easy transition to the next guy all of a sudden. Even with some solid success in young pitching this year Narveson's injury and losing both Greinke and Marcum also looks very hard on the team. Wolf is fading, so suddenly our rotation looks like most of the last 20 years if we start selling. 1 guy worth having and a whole lot of questions.
  22. It's always nice when other teams botch fundamentals, what a horrible run down
