  1. I pointed this out in a smaller thread, but as much as I like Schafer and Gindl it is really hard to call them up with the way they have started their seasons. Green may have been in a mini-funk, but he had clearly started to come around the last couple of weeks. Gindl wasn't even hitting .200 going into yesterday.
  2. Allow me to grumble that my local Fox station had listed last week that they would be showing the Brewers Giants game today. I even upgraded to a new TV to enjoy one of the few times I'd get to see them and then they swapped it out with the Tigers Game instead.
  3. I like both Gindl and Schafer, but I also freely acknowledge that it is kind of tough to call-up either one given how they have started the season. Neither has been a scouting darling either. I think they'll get it going, but Green seems to be the only plausible guy to call up as a hitter, unless this OF thing with Gomez and Braun is going to drag out and it has to be an OFer. Still hasn't Green done a little OF?
  4. At this point I have complete faith that the team did everything within reason based on Zach's talent. That said on an emotional level I put it in the same category as Neugie, and Saenz. You get these guys with the big time talent up on then it seems like only one thing takes them down. Whereas others like Rogers seem to just keep doing enough to hang around without putting it together the same way. Talk about looking real thin on lefties in the minors. Just last spring it looked more like you'd have more guys coming out of hte pen as lefties than you could find places for (Stetter, Parra, and Braddock)
  5. I'm pro-Gindl but his slow start makes it pretty hard to justify calling him up now to see if he can contribute. I think you stick with Gomez/ Morgan in CF and shift Aoki to RF because of his arm and Gomez superior CF defense. I wonder in the long run if Hart holds up better at 1st anyway?
  6. It's a bit tough because any of your best bat options involves shifting a guy to a newer position, whether that is Hart, Ramirez or Green. Given that it is season ending you have to make the effort to get your best guys out there and ride out the consequences. There might be something to be said for Calling up Conrad short term, let Green work on defense in AAA for a bit, and then you can try Hart and Aramis out in practice perhaps and maybe a game or two and then evaluate which configuration you like the best. One issue with moving Hart is that since he has been so hot, it's almost a given that he'd cool off after a position switch leading to an easy silly story line...
  7. Here's to today being the day the pitching staff remembers it is supposed to be pretty good. In terms of key contributors Aramis is the only one who has really under performed so far. Gonzalez offensively and defensively has been pretty nice.
  8. One gets the impression he might want that MVP this year.
  9. Block seems to be warming up. Hughes was tough to forget, because he was Uecker's first partner that I remember growing up so there for awhile when I started hearing Cubs broadcasts after the league switch it was disorienting. Having to listen to him in the booth with Ron Santo though cured me of nostalgia. Powell was the best though. If Fox had brains they'd dump most of their current clown group of announcers and get some of this real talent calling games on Saturday.
  10. Along with all of the other exciting stuff in the pitching lines these days, how about the length of these starts? 8 inning starts in the minors? That's a whole lot of control and dominance to keep the pitch count down. I just don't really remember previous guys lasting that long as more than a rarity. And in the last week we've had a couple of them that I can remember and Nelson going 7 2/3.
  11. Glad to see there was a great game at Miller Park tonight. I really like Walla's upside with all of that power to go along with the big improvement in other hitting skills.
  12. Based on handedness and approach Gamel hitting second makes the most sense. At this point it looks like Hart has more over the fence power, so he makes more sense in the 5th spot. Additionally if you want to make the best advantage of Weeks speed Gamel with all of his doubles and working the count really let's you utilize both skills. From a roster construction point of view I'm not sure that the 3 CFs is the biggest issue since two of them have a fair amount of power, and all 3 have plenty of speed. I also think that you are better off with Morgan/ Gomez in the 7th spot where you have the option to try and steal while Gonzalez bats. Speed in front of the pitcher has a minimal impact, since you sacrifice them over so often before they would have a chance to steal. From a roster balance point of view, having an alternate universe where Ishekawa not merely goes away but Aramis becomes the primary 1st and 3rd back-up while Green becomes the starter does a lot more. Gives you a real bench bat, a strong righty on the bench and gets you another lefty into the starting line-up. It's not going to happen unless Aramis collapses though
  13. Not to take anything away from the on going excitement over Downhill thunder, but how about Max Walla as another guy who made some big improvements last year, and on the plate discipline side has certainly continued so far this year, big bump in walk rate obviously. Just as interestingly though the K rate is down quite a bit as well even though he has had a batting average cold streak, and move out of Helena. His power was always there...
  14. On the positive side it's hard to complain about 5 innings of 9K and 1 run baseball from your long man on an emergency start.
  15. It's a little bit older analysis, but what I've seen suggests that defense at least across the population of baseball players regresses basically from the beginning of a players career. The explanation was that unlike batting, defense is primarily physical skill and speed drops off way earlier than everything else.
  16. Pardon me while I have a small Clancy moment. Let's see what he can do! Bring up another real bat! If his SS defense is only of the won't embarrass variety that would be pretty useful in terms of roster construction (and probably guarantee him a job for 10 more years at least)
  17. George might not get a lot of starts, but since Roenicke seems to be more than happy to use him as a primary bat off the bench he is really filling both roles. With part managers I think it might have made more sense. I'm also hopeful that RR will give George a few more start to help keep Lucroy fresher later in the season.
  18. Anybody happen to know the last time we had a minor leaguer pitch at least 19 consecutive scoreless innings?
  19. At this point the only thing to add about Nelson is that the Brewers haven't seen that kind of thunder from down under since David Nilsson.
  20. Perhaps the most interesting thing about that analysis is that if you had poled people back in '03 Adams probably would have been the one of the group least likely to have a noteworthy career, except maybe Childers. The guys with the stuff on that list all had a nasty run of injuries for the most part or never got enough command. Saenz in that one start sure looked like he was going to be a solid starter.
  21. Given the years and amount I think this should work out pretty well for the Crew. If Lucroy happens to have a 20 HR season or hit .300 at some point then it becomes a steal, just due to the inflated arbitration price that would bring. With the rather good amount of pitch framing skill, I think that puts LuCroy in the the top 1/2 to 1/3 of catchers. My concern methodologically, is that we seem to be finally making some progress more accurately measuring catcher defense (which seemed like the ultimate black hole of measurements back in the early Brewerfan days). The thing is that there are so many distinct catcher skills, framing, game calling, throwing, and blocking that looking at just one and pronouncing him a well above average defensive catcher is not the best approach. In rushing through some of that it seemed like he was middle of the road to slightly below average in some of the other skills. His framing is so good I'm sure he is an overall net plus with the glove, but it may not be as dramatic looking when all of the defensive skills are tallied in. Still there is a fair amount of value in having a guy who is solid across the board and one who might still improve noticeably in a few areas.
  22. In the post Eck era losing a closer by a contender is always a big deal. It shouldn't have to be, but it makes the GM and manager jumpy. Even under the best of conditions it usually seems to take a month before the replacement issue is settled. In the meantime you have a manager moving guys around trying to find a solution... The odds of that creating even more problems are decent. Not as big a deal as losing Votto or a #1, but still it tightens whatever narrow advantage they may have had on everyone else over the course of the season.
  23. I have a notion that I made this point some years ago, but it is worth keeping in mind. Once you have a good team, you don't necessarily need a top 5 farm system to continue success. The Braves had a respected, but as far as I can recall never a top 5 system after their title runs started. Once you have a lot of big league talent the dependence on the farm system to deliver an All-star player or two every year isn't there. Obviously it would be nice, but one does need to look at the team more holistically. I concur on the value of a Greinke extension in that sense. Having two superb starters to go with Braun and cast gives the team a lot of flexibility in mixing and matching guys to consistently stay a winner without having to break the bank, or get super lucky on drafting and developing.
  24. I'd be careful with the Cirillo comparison. While I think Green could match the offense part of Cirillo's game, Jeff added a lot of value with the glove and Green is just a run of the mill defender. The aforementioned Corey Koskie and Cirillo were much more similar in that regard plus defenders with high OBP and moderate power.
