  1. I'm guessing calling Wolf #3 has more to do with breaking up the lefties. In the regular season the designations don't matter until it begins to impact things like skipping starts or something like that.
  2. Can anybody provide an example of a closer besides Hoffman or Rivera who would have actually been worth a 5 year deal for big bucks starting after age 29? The guys is blast and all, but even the best closers, seem to regress to mere relievers after a few years.
  3. I suspect that for national prospect raters, pitcher evaluations are viewed in large part through the lens of which farm system they are in as much as stuff in some situations. In this case given a large number of pitchers with similar grades (stuff, command, and poise) the organization influences how many view the prospect. Not consciously per se, but still significant. I'd posit that in other organizations we'd have at least 2 of those pitchers in Kevin's top 101. Some of that is fair, since our track record of developing pitchers is mixed.
  4. Deep Down II .220 .281 .390 .672 Is super Prospect Mike Trout's line after 135 PAs and people still like him.
  5. Ironically enough one of the better comparisons, is none other than Cecil Fielder. Prince's dad was blocked for a number of years, got minimal playing time, but hit fairly well especially for the late 80's. So the post Japan surge is actually a mirage in his case. Gamel would have gotten a real shot last year for certain (if not blocked by Prince), if not the year before that on a different team. I think he hits just fine, not quite the 50 HR level but near the top of the non-elite 1st basemen level.
  6. Maybe they could directly hire a large number of 'hotdog vendors' for their minor league teams then?
  7. Maybe Money is trying out to be a heel in the WWE thread?
  8. I can't see being concerned about Axford, other than most relievers seem to have very modest shelf lives as big name guys. So I'd figure he might blow a few more saves next year just because of regression to the mean. Stack the pen with as many quality guys as possible, so no one gets overworked because the manager only trusts a couple of guys in games that could lead to a save situation.
  9. In the spirit of the thread, I could see Gonzalez becoming a vent topic. The defensive upgrade will not be easy to point, and his offense could easily draw attention if the team is struggling. I don't think that is fair necessarily, but I could see it happening.
  10. The proper way to look at the issue is that the number is indeed a fact (everybody who got their calculators out would come to the same number). The NAME of the statistic in this case however makes a very strong claim as to how to interpret the number. A claim that is reasonable, but one that still needs to be interpreted with some amount of caution.
  11. I'm skeptical that Morgan would bring that much of value. He's still plenty cheap, and I'm just fine having a prospect in AAA who could probably do the job burn an option as depth for a year. It's not hard to imagine someone else getting hurt while Braun is on suspension...
  12. I know there has been a huge wringing of hands by some sabermetrics folks at these drafts changes and the damage to small market teams. I remain skeptical. If the talent pool remains the same, the more rigorous system of price controls pretty much has to keep the price of drafting players constant. The only alternative for these guys to get a bigger payday is to leave for a different sport! And I can't for one see that as a major threat. The only sport that has a somewhat consistent history of competing for talent is football, and even there the number of significant players who have done both seems pretty small to me. Nevertheless overtime it could be an issue. Speaking as the parent of a football player in high school and football fan, don't you think the longer we finally have realistic conversations about the quality of life post NFL that this will more than counter balance any perceived difference in economics? If you can do both, you do baseball have a healthier longer life. I'm sure there are people who will make different decisions, but when you are fighting over that second and third million these have to become very significant issues for a lot of people.
  13. I doubt it would be anything major. It is much more likely that if Braun's absence leads to a mediocre start they use that as an argument coupled with the Cards comeback last year to hang-on and play it out. Maybe they re-tool a bit and trade a veteran for a younger guy. I could see Wolf being dealt to open a rotation spot for Peralta as a possibility that gives you some of the benefits of selling, without waiving the flag.
  14. I figured this year would be pretty unspectacular last offseason. Yet here we are not the clear cut favorites, but at the worst it's a dead heat between us, the Reds, and St. Louis for winning the division. The Cards without Pujols have a rather old core of stars, and the Reds seem to be burning their farm pretty fast for modest improvement. The Cubs are at least a couple of years from relevance. With the combination of moves we can be a good competitive team in this division for quite awhile. It may not work out, but this team is not in a clear cut predictable place. Offseason to offseason is the only way to think about the future for right now. All it would take for the team to take on a very positive long term vibe would be for a couple of our starter prospects to put in some dominating AA and AAA performances this year.
  15. If Volquez's arm is slagged the Reds win the deal, but if they goofed and he bounces back this looks like a Herschel Walker trade. Which I'm OK with.
  16. I like that I'm surprised, but I do not have a good sense of how his stats will translate so that makes me pretty ambivalent. A high average higher OBP guy with good defense in LF, moving into a bench slot when Braun's suspension is over sounds great. Juan Pierre without the steals, much less exciting. And at this point I could believe either end of that spectrum.
  17. To the extent that ESPN now holds undue influence over college football 'realignment' is the perfect microcosm. Lot's and lots of hyperventilating, rumor, speculation, weeks and weeks of news stories ridiculously overpromised impacts. Yet at the end most of these moves amount to a lot of reshuffling of deck chairs. And frankly by largely staying out of the fray and staying to an actual strategy the Big Ten looks a lot better.
  18. As a thought for an unexpected route doubling up one of our current starting pitchers and one of the position guys for a starting pitcher and a position guy at one of our need areas? Not exactly a challenge trade
  19. I think the team has a lot of safe financial moves in bringing guys up to reasonably plug a lot of holes. Most of which all things considered would be what I would do. However, based on the large number of offseasons I fully expect Melvin to deal some of those guys and others in a move that none of us sees coming. Losing Fielder ain't easy, but going into last years offseason there was every reason to be fairly pessimistic about Fielder last year, and then Doug pulled multiple rabbits out of his hat. If he had a comparable offseason again we'd be a 100+ win juggernaut with a world series ring. I'll set the bar a little lower and suggest that only one of Green and Gamel is with the Crew next year, Melvin makes one big trade, some debatable signings of mid range guys, and throws in a few nuggets at least one of which manages to turn out big time. End product is a low 90's win team.
  20. It was all part of the retain Fielder strategy, go to game 7 to maximize playoff revenue. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  21. I'll take an RBI every other game and great defense from my catcher hitting 8th
  22. At this point I'm OK with Yuni trying to earn all 3 million dollars of his salary in October.
  23. Rereading after the rally started was quite hysterical. I don't have TBS, and the internet feed I payed for in the NLDS was terribly unreliable. But there's no-one I'd have rather been listening to than Ueck.
  24. I don't, I deliberately work for substantially less money (on the order of 20%) in the exact same field at a place I am much happier at. I can understand why Fielder might choose to leave. I'm not angry because he has more than handled himself well, but I strongly reject the notion that we need to focus strictly on dollars as happiness. In fact given how much fun he has had I kind of feel sorry for Prince because I suspect he'll come to regret the decision to take every last cent. Cecil is still screwing up his life.
