  1. I guess we'll have to put your face on the big screen when the pitchers are hitting.
  2. Helena's mediocre season is damping some enthusiasm, but Walla is having himself a pretty solid season as a 20 year old in the Pioneer league. I wouldn't get excited, but his average, power, and discipline have all improved quite a bit. I think he might be my sleeper for next year, if he starts to harness more of that BP power he seems to have all the other batting skills seem in line for him to explode as a prospect, so that's kind of fun.
  3. In all seriousness If I were the GM I'd have a fake we want you back talk to get him tee'd off enough to sign the official retirement papers right in front of me (I'd bring them along). It would be right up there with getting Kenny Williams to claim Alex Rios on the scale of bad GM bailouts.
  4. It's possible you could think about dealing Narveson, but there is a lot to be said for having your rotation set, and a nice prospect in place who can fill in during the inevitable injury.
  5. I'll say that I don't think this move is inconsistent with Melvin's previous MO. He seems to have a couple of these type of moves every year. He has a short DL stint to cover, possibly needing roster flexibility, and he brings up an older not much of a prospect guy. Presumably someone he'd be OK with losing on waivers if it comes to that.
  6. I wonder if Pirates fans are going to remember the 'call' like we remember the sweep suits. Granted they were doing it with smoke and mirrors before, but to collapse from tied near the end of July to over 10 games back less than 3 weeks later is brutal.
  7. Wouldn't Wisconsin likely our still to be signed draft picks as well? A couple of really good starters can go a long way towards making a team more interesting.
  8. I might think they only need one win in the series, but I'd sure hate for them not to light Jackson up like a Christmas tree tonight. Leading off with a win really turns up the pressure even higher on the Cards too.
  9. If you have Braun, Weeks, and use that depth of middle tier prospects to not have holes in the rest of the line-up and maybe even some defense we do have plenty of pitching to keep a run going. Essentially you have a version of the mid 2000's Twins with better starting pitchers.
  10. Warning revisionist history, from the beginning one of the remarkable things about Betancourt's badness was that it didn't really matter how you evaluated him UZR, other defensive systems, prior fan observations, and scouting all had his as substandard. This was pointed out months ago, to claim this under the antiquated scouts vs. stats debate is not remotely accurate.
  11. daring to defy the almighty numbers? The argument has always been that Betancourt was so bad it didn't matter if you scouted him, relied on fan reports or crunched his stat line he always came out on the bottom. I too hope he does well, I just have no rational reason to believe that this will happen. The hot streak hasn't changed that, if for no other reason than all it has allowed hm to do is get his percentages in line with his career numbers. If he does this for another month and a half and he's got an OBP comfortably north of .300, then we can talk about him having changed and gotten substantially better as a player.
  12. Clearly Logan likes triple A. A lot more hits, a lot more extra base hits, slightly better walk rate. The most curious thing is that his K-rate has gone down about 50%. I don't know if it means anything after just 80 PAs, but it's a pretty dramatic improvement.
  13. I think it's useful going into the series to realize that it's more important to them than it is to us. Neither team has an obvious hurdle left on the schedule, but the 9 head to head games with them having 6 at home gives them a real good chance to even the score. That calculation changes quite a bit though if the Brewers win this series. Then your down 4 games in the middle of August with no schedule advantage. Far from impossible, but there downside to the series is potentially being well towards the margin. Our downside is ending up in a dead heat.
  14. Can I just say that I really can't for the life of me still believe that Corporan made it to the majors. I'm happy for the guy, but I don't think he ever posted an acceptable OPS at any level of baseball.
  15. The Reds do have the constellation of players a team would need to really come roaring back into it. It's not terribly likely, but it could happen.
  16. I think it's quite dangerous to uncritically use Casey's last month figure. The thing that is highlighted by removing the 3 HR game, is that it really shows he hasn't been hot or warming up for the last month. He has been slightly less bad, and then had a huge game. And if you are trying to determine if he's going to be useful and is coming out of it those are two radically different things. Betancourt has been legitimately hot the last month. But the fact that power is his only above average weapon for his position, and his hot month only includes 3 HRs doesn't exactly excite me.
  17. 19 runs in a 7 inning game is pretty crazy. Perhaps it does put into perspective how silly this teams numbers might look if they played there home games in one of the west coast band boxes and were truly PCL inflated.
  18. Yuni still has a long way to go, up until that bomb his Hot month still didn't involve him hitting even .300 and he had only hit 2 HRs. Don't let not completely sucking for a month, fool you just because it comes of the heels of completely terrible. Still enjoy the moment!
  19. Here's to hoping he can flash enough glove and bat to enamored Roeneicke at SS!
  20. At this point I'd say Melvin is likely done. I'm sure he'll keep things open, but after acquiring 2 middle IFers I'd be kind of surprised to see a 3rd. I could see him finding a lefty for the pen as a last bit of tinkering though.
  21. One could make a pretty decent argument that of the healthy middle IF we have Hairston Jr. is now the best and should play everyday. I don't know that Roenicke is that crafty, but you could more or less make him an everyday player while Rickie is out rotating him through the positions depending on match ups. Then again I still live in a fantasy world where Green is called up, Casey rides the pine, CC is cut, and Hairston is the starting SS once Rickie is back.
  22. Hasn't Casey played some second? If so why not try that configuration with Green up.
  23. I'm perfectly pumped at this point if Arnett turns into an effective middle reliever. Frankly the same with Rogers, any MLB use is a victory at this point.
  24. Can we dig up Lenny harris to pinch hit instead of Counsell too? Since we're getting the band back together.
