  1. That's a pretty good line, would have been better if they had been talking about Bill Lambier, but still entertaining.
  2. So is Luis destined to have awesome starts the first time around every league this season? No question he has improved, but I still would like to see him get some more time in the minors to refine his control. A september call-up seems reasonable, but I think he should start next year with Indy barring another step forward.
  3. Well I don't know if it will be enough, but Glendon has had 3 out 4 good starts and the other was merely not good. One can hope.
  4. Taking another look and Jeremy Frost has continued to respond well to his big jump to High desert. Prior to last nights game he had a .961 OPS with a good OBP. His ABs are still limited and he's no spring chicken at 23, plus HD does tend to produce 1 year wonders. Still it's nice to see him doing well and maybe making himself a solid prospect at catcher.
  5. You know I bet if those midwest league pitchers saw video of Prince's collison with the catcher at home plate last week, he wouldn't be hit again.
  6. No offense Jim but I jsut used simple math half of 76 is 38 Helena has played 37 games. They'll win tonight just to make sure of course, but just trying to help out on the explanation.
  7. Well it would help if we knew why Billings had played one less game? If it was rained out it might not count as part of the first half schedule Jim. Helena only has 1 more game in their first half, so even if Billings does get to make up there game the best they can do is tie and Helena might have a tie breaker already too.
  8. Odd that we have to Wes' on the team? It's no Mouton's Foutons, but it's still odd. If Wes wants to go out for 6 innings every night and 3 ER that's a fairly solid improvement for the team. I'm not sure how much, because a person can certainly make the argument that you manage a game that Glendon let get out of hand a lot differently then a game you feel like you've got a good chance to win, and that may lead to some of the quite skewed records the team has. In fact I'd assert that with a couple of 4.5 ERA pitchers after our current top 3 and Ben doing about what he's done plus Hall instead of Clayton we're pretty close to .500. No one stands out as spectacular, but it's a team that doesn't have any glaring weaknesses. i.e. the KC model of how to win in a weak division
  9. As I recall a lot of High Desert players were grabbed out of the Indy leagues, and some others would classify as older players..... Long story short if unpleasant how many of those HD guys are going to still be in the system next year? Reid makes it sound more like a toxic waste dump than a disappointment. Which is unfortunate because there are still some prospects on that team I think would be worth seeing in AA next year outside of the distortion of the park.
  10. Well obobo Helena is no another High Desert, and I think it's not even as friendly as Ogden was last year, but the Pioneer league is an offensive league like the Cal league and I'm pretty sure that Helena has a park affect similar to what Minute Maid field has. Additionally it's not uncommon for older college players to have big years in R+ and never make it out of A ball. So one does need to be cautious, but it is exciting.
  11. "in the works for awhile" "No surprise" Interesting quotes, but it leaves you to wonder why he started in A+ if they realy seemed to want him in Huntsville all along? It's not like he's done anything to scream promote me this year. Ah well the saga continues.
  12. Here's a fun question. What if Nelson does well straight out of the gate for Huntsville? Say continues to hit .300 and his returning power keeps on coming back. Does he move with the rest of the Huntsville squad to Indy next year?
  13. I doubt Glendon is closer material but he put a nice littel relief streak together... The market on starters is so thin if Rusch has a solid start next time out someone will take him. Neyer lists the Yankees, Red Sox, and Twins in the AL as needing starting pitching. Not sure they would take a chance on Glendon, but George never wastes an opportunity to burn money. In the NL the Cubs, Cardinals, and Giants all have starting pitcher needs with the Cardinals needing more than 1. A fair number of the teams are just looking for an innings eater so I'd say Rusch has a chance to be dealt by the July 31st deadline. I'm not expecting much, but a couple of solid A+ players would be nice, and just getting off the hook for Glendon's buyout is a solid return. It's hard to say in the end because as you see every year there is such a variety in what teams trade for these lower level MLB players.
  14. I guess HD needed somebody, but this has to hurt DJ. Has obviously got the OBP skills, he just needs to figure out how to hit for more power outside of HD. Compared to the first couple of months for the guys that got promoted to Huntsville last year I think DJ did just fine. Oh well, we'll just see how it plays out. Does this mean Nelson is going to get more LF time?
  15. Another note, as pointed out Hall has really been getting it since May, the Tribe kept pointing to moving him into the lead-off spot as igniting him but he still hit .315 in May. I think the Lead-off thing coincided a bit more with Indy playing better on a consistent basis and is a bit of a more dramatic movement, but Hall has been hitting over .300 for 3 months. Maybe we can petition to just have the entire Indy team records for the month of April eliminated from our memory and go from there.
  16. We've been concerned since Brad came back about his power, but he seems to have found some of it consistently over the last couple of weeks with extra base hits appearing about every other day in the box score. Not quite the pace we were expecting from him in HD, but certainly progress from the extremely empty batting average he was putting up. To bad Prince didn't have a big day yesterday with all of those base runners.
  17. The memory of being able to have gotten Acevedo at last year's deadline for Jose Hernandez if only we had paid his salary was too much for most of us.
  18. Not really happy about that, but as someone else said it helps somewhat that he's had a couple of college years. I think the most important thing is not to rush him even though you can hear the clock. You want him to have success early and often because if you can get him to AA and excelling in 3 years he's got the talent for the rest of the jump. I'd probably start him in Beloit next year and be prepared to move from there. I wonder if the Brewers might have him play winter ball? it's fairly advanced and he might struggle some but it's experience.
  19. Really Sweet Lou that's more obvious and over used than 80's references in Huntsville! We're trying to expand the musical repitoire here as soon as we find Tennelle we can have the 70's at Helena http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  20. I think it's rather misleading to say we skipped all of our best prospects over A+. Nelson is there. Jones is the only premium guy I can recall that we skipped at the start of the year. Clark and Kade were promoted on merit and because of their advancing age. I seem to recall that the Beloit squad last year was pretty bad with little pitching and sporadic hitting outside of Nelson. As to whether Doug likes HD I can't answer that and I have a hard time arguing with him if he feels that the park is damaging to prospects.
  21. Hey watch what your putting in their terrifying stories about narrowly missed bizzare injuries to JJ just don't sit well. Hey let's highlight some positives with the Mavs Jeremy Frost is doing pretty well up their. His BB/K ratio is a bit concerning, but he's more than holding his own.
  22. Now I may have implied a connection but I couldn't remember what awards Brooks recieved hence the generic "MVP". Still that's a much better than average prospect list even for 1st rounders.
  23. I have a confession to make guys. Lou is the result of my first truly successful genetic engineering experiment. I obtained some DNA samples from John Vandenberg and Brian Foster and was able to fuse them and incubate this clone prior to the draft and fabricate a history for him. As you know see he possess Foster's raw power bat and arm combined with the pure distilled baseball knowledge that runs in Vandenberg's blood as well as his ability to hit for average. After all those years of talk success has finally been achieved! Fun factoid 60% of Foster's hits have been for extra bases. So far Manny Ramirez (66%) is the only other player in the system doing anything like that. Prince checks in at a modest 33%
  24. As I would so gracefully point out there was a certain Longhorn who won MVP awards in back to back years who struggle mightily to find a bench role in MLB.
  25. Well Jim I do believe that as painful as it is to admit all of the best candidates to fill in at Huntsville are pitching in Beloit. I for one would like to see the little promotion score cards they have on each player to see how there doing and what more they are expected to do. Some how I expect that right now their thinking about Huntsville in the playoffs no matter what, so while a season sweep ould be nice they can afford to risk not winning the second half by a game or two. Beloit has a shot at the playoffs in the second half (what a difference a second hitter in the line-up has made) and I'm sure they'd love that and Helena following them.
