  1. I think it's safe to say that if Tampa picked Harvey it would do so only because they knew he would sign for less. Which is OK since it would hopefully keep the price down for us, but atleast wouldn't aggravate it. That said after Detroit got done thank god we'd pick DY. We just don't have any RF prospects and I think after his Miller park performance he's ahead on the board. You can argue that we've got a number of 2B prospects none of them great, but a lot of guys who could fill the speedy lead-off role and Cruz too plus Ginter at the MLB level. It's not that their's enough talent to sway a decision except in a case where it's close on talent.
  2. Well so far Haudricourt has done a pretty good job with the first two articles. And it's better coverage on the draft so far then we've gotten previously.
  3. For the record if anybody tells you that Wilhelmsen is lacking in confidence don't believe it. Talking to his dad at Fanfest and he said that Tom was disappointed that he didn't start the year at High Desert. It certainly seems like we were fortunate that so many other teams passed on him. Stuff and control a most dangerous combination
  4. Some nice things on the minor league front. Corey seems to be settling in and taking his offensive game up a little bit lately. Flashing some more of that power and a little more patience. Krynzel is on a track of about 80 walks in a full season as a leadoff hitter, a nice figure. You'd definitely like to see him make more contact, but hitting over .300 without any HRs and that strikeout total is fairly impressive.
  5. Poor Toby way back when he started the Power 50 he had to reach to call guys prospects, and now he's got guys who would have been top 30 material easily in those days on the outside looking in. Would help if we were in a position to be graduating guys off the Power 50 due to promotion. The post draft competition will be fierce.
  6. Wow colby hits 5-5 on his top 5 DFE candidates. I think it's pretty clear that the Brewers like this process and are comfortable with it, though Eveland only sort of counts since they wanted him to sign last year. I wonder though with such a high number of players signed if they didn't use the process as a way to bridge some budgetary overflow from last year?
  7. It's OK Cheese take a deep breath, but I doubt Weeks will start at AA. You have to atleast see what he can do for a week or so against Class A pitching. He's not as polished as many think and he's had little exposure to top level competition. That doesn't make him a bad choice, but I'd be skeptical of starting any college aluminum bat bred player in AA. Personally I'm happy with either pick, and if for whatever reason they liked Harvey I'd tend to trust them, but with Loewen gone I don't see any of the pitchers as being worth our pick
  8. I guess when you start dealing with big numbers on a regular basis it maybe easy to lose perspective. It's one thing to try and maximize your bonus, since for a lot of these players that's all they'll ever really make as a player. So you want to try and grab that slice of the dream, but I wonder sometimes if they forget to assess what they are turning down. After a couple of million just about any non-Enron investment strategy would allow you to effectively "retire" and live a very comfortable middle class lifestyle. So given the risks if you've taken a deep breath and looked over the possibilities why try and holdout for that last couple hundred thousand. That's what stuns me so much about the Harrington thing. Here's to hoping he does get things turned around.
  9. I agree this is great news I was getting worried we wouldn't be able to hear from you again.
  10. I seem to recall that last year the news on Manny's signing came out kind of late the day after when we had all given up hope. Or something along those lines.
  11. One would hope that given that we have farm system depth now injured prospects won't feel those kind of pressures to return to quickly since they are the man. Can't wait for Ben to get healthy again.
  12. Rydogg advanced or not I think 2005 is quick even for a september call-up. Weeks being a college guy is a little more believeable, but I wouldn't bet on any high school player to blow through the minors in a year and a half.
  13. When asked Igor do you think the D-rays are trying to play games with everyone so they can sign their pick cheaper? I quickly said yes. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the D-rays still want Weeks and they are just trying to sign him to predraft terms and using "interest" in Young to get him a few bucks cheaper.
  14. That's certainly another pretty good haul with the DFE's this year. After last year waiting impatiently hoping to sign Manny I have complete faith in the team to ID the talent they want to sign and get it done. Can't wait for Eveland to get signed.
  15. Rumaging through my head that's clouded now with so many prospect names to remember, wasn't Barnes drafted more as a pitcher? Granted in this organization I can see why they'd go for a third base prospect if they can find one.
  16. I humbly submit the following promotion proposal. starting in Beloit Chas Terni to HD, Johnny Rayburn to Huntsville, Rich Paz to Indy. As a final step depending on you preferences Veras can be replaced at 3rd by Luuloa, Luuloa could be released or any number of situations, but in the end it gets a couple of guys who might be utility prospects moving through the system before they get too old and hopefully adds soem talent to places that could use it.
  17. At this point I'm not terribly impressed with a 24 year old middle relief prospect. I'd have taken the money
  18. Quibble all you want but I'm happy to see some more roster cleaning. If nothing else I'd bet other players with more to offer get put through waivers in the coming days/ months. And it's nice to have Rushford back. Now featuring the Indianopolis Indians in the movie Minorr League http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  19. Saying for the moment that we do manage to sign Barnes that would be a pretty sweet follow-up on the DFE front to Manny last year. Is the team making an effort to use DFE to try and uncover more pitching gems then they could do within current roster limits or has it just worked out that way?
  20. Hey Toby I was wondering if you had a take on Dan Hall scouting wise. His a bit old for A+ at 23, but it's not ridiculous a midseason promotion (not the Huntsville needs more pitching) and he'd be on track and holding your own in Coors II merits consideration too.
  21. You don't draft a player who at best could turn into Dmitri Young at #2, but if you have a prospect that ends up that way it should be considered a victory. As usual Dmitri's problem is that he got overpaid. As a young player hitting well over .300 with decent power coming off the bench and even being an acceptable place holder in LF, 1st, 3rd, RF is pretty good. He'd give you about league average hitting.
  22. I'm starting to feel bad for Coop getting stuck with that train wreck.
  23. I don't know that teams trading down slot to save money would be the worst. In some ways it may represent a viable strategy. You don't want to see a team make an inferior trade to move down, but that would only happen if the market for high priced players were depressed..... The logical conclusion of which is a few teams drafting at the top, and if a few teams are drafting at the top that's a lot like a monopoly. In which case unless the Yankees are the only team playing everyone else is going to leverage their multiple picks into lower signing bonuses solving the problem.
  24. Timing and expectations. Things that amount to little more than luck and circumstance. Was Loewen really that bad or was it more of a case of him not performing quite as well as expected? This is where timing comes in. If he had had a less than stellar start a month ago people would have noticed, but then forgotten about it. I swear you see this every year with the top tier talent they get built up and then the first less than stellar thing that happens people are shooting each other trying to get off the ship. I'd be concerned that the bad performance may have been due to other reasons, but a single start isn't going to change my mind.
  25. I think I'll wait until the end of May before I start thinking about Hall coming around. End of June I might seriously start thinking it. He's got enough talent that short of really awful luck it's hard for him to bat near .200. Even if he was batting .280 he'd still only have a .320 OBP so he's got plenty to work on.
