  1. Unfortunately it looks like I won't be able to make it this year, just way too many life issues. I hope everyone has a good time and I look forward to coming back in force for 2005!
  2. I do seem to recall that Doug stated they felt that it was more productive to do extra instruction in the spring than the fall league and that was their motivation for the change. The early reporting date would seem to validate that for all those who took it as a sign the team wasn't doing all it could do to make the prospect thing work.
  3. Stupid stats are meaningless I say! the fact that a team of Enrique Cruz's is predicted to get a single victory obviously fails because it assumes that somehow the Brewers could find a pitcher or two to throw a shutout! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/roll.gif On the other hand it's a nice way of putting his ineptitude in perspective.
  4. Perhaps not quite the spot for it, but I think we need to give Melvin a little more credit for only offering a minor league deal to Perez. We all know that based on last year a lot of other organizations would have signed him like he was truly an average catcher and a number appear ready to do so. If we are going to harp on the small negative things a GM does like signing a good bench type player a million bucks a year for 2 or 3 years. We should compliment him when he shows restraint.
  5. Yes but I'm sure Jack Z. and his scouts love them http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .
  6. I think Doug deserves a little bit more credit for offering arby to Perez and Vanderwal. It certainly looks like a no risk way to pick up 1 (for Perez) and maybe even 2 extra early draft picks. Sure it's not 1st rounders, but second-third rounders can give excellent value with much smaller price tags and still comparatively good chances of contributing. And without having to shell out for a huge bonus in the 1st round money should continue to not be a serious problem. To bad we didn't start playing around with these type C free agents before.
  7. Santos is modestly intriguing, but Nunnally looks like he's some real good OF depth Career MLB OPS of .823 with good OBP. Definitely a guy who has had a hard time getting an extended look anywhere. Given his age he might get bad at anytime, but a solid NRI on this team.
  8. St. Louis is clearly jealous
  9. Performance may come and go, but tools last nearly forever.
  10. I guess for me I have a hard time believing that his career batting average can stay so putrid. Then again his BB/K ratio has basically flipped between the minors and the majors and the increased K rate alone could account for the drop in batting average. Still that does indicate that he's still got some room to turn it around a little. It's not the best option, but at this stage of the game it's a reasonable one.
  11. Well I can't get too excited, but he's got enough of a track record that he might reasonably be expected to hit closer to .250 and as clancy put it, be a lefty duplication of Osik's last season. Which would be allright.
  12. So how long do we let the workhorse pitch? I'm sure Jim remembers the last time we let a pitcher pitch himself out in winterball and then try to get a full MLB season out of him for the first time.
  13. Works for me I imagine.
  14. You know for all the hitter's league talk about the AFL looking at the team numbers doesn't really suggest a massive HR bias there just didn't seem to be a lot of inflated looking SLG% / not nearly as many extra base hits. Even Rickie I own OBP Weeks only slugged .431 hardly an awe inspiring number (the .440 OBP is however). This may make Nelson and Krynzel's poor number a bit more palatable. I would have liked to have seen Kade get some more ABs, but those are the breaks. Here's to seeing Ben and Tim pitching next year in Spring training.
  15. What kind of defense does Coste have? With that fairly proliffic batting average it's easy to see how he could work his way onto the team and be a solid member. Kind of reminds me of Casanova, The biggest potential difference being that Casanova wasn't a very good defensive catcher so he looked pretty worthless when the hits didn't fall in.
  16. I keep looking at Johson's line and all I can think of is Billy Hall II. Granted Hall was a lot younger when he tore up HD then struggled in AA for half a season, prior to recovering for a good AFL campaign and then getting promoted to AAA. Sound Familiar? One could think that he's made some improvements, but I'm skeptical since the pitching is weaker the elevation higher and it's only been 34 ABs with modest power. One can always hope though.
  17. Ben with a 17:2 K/BB ratio? That's sick. He'll have a long career not walking guys and not giving up HRs in this day and age. Certainly looks like there might be some interesting spring training battle between Ben and Luis, heck I'm sure Nick will register some mention as a rotation candidate.
  18. So were starting to creep towards that 60 PA mark for Krynzel everyone else has played less. I have advocated extreme caution with AFL numbers especialy for position players because it's a very offensive league due to conditions and the quality of the pitching. So to that end I tend to view it how I look at rookie league numbers, skills are more important than the OPS. His SB numbers are still not very good, but the one thing that is begginning to standout is his K-rate. Right now he's striking out once every 8 ABs, which is really quite good. A full season of 560 ABs is only a 70K season at that rate. This contrasts mightily with his rate in Huntsville of more than a K every 4 ABs. You can put caveats for pitcher quality and small sample size on that, but it's awfully hard not to think that atleast some of that difference is due to a real improvement. Put another way I submit that K rate for a batter is less sample size dependent that other things. Much of the luck affect we see in sample size is variation in the rate that balls in play fall for hits, not at the rate they are put into play.
  19. Those are some pretty numbers. Jason Shelley part II anyone? Anybody know what he throws?
  20. Kind of disappointed to see Paz on the list. We've debated this somewhat before, but even if he can't play SS particularily well having a bench UT who can post OBP near .400 is someone worth looking at. Some pitchers on the list too that are solid depth guys, but in the minor league FA world there's a lot of guys who can fill that description so I'm not overly concerned.
  21. Here's one from the wildly improbable. The Expos in their continuing bid to win now yet strip down trade Vasquez and Sledge for Richie? Just kind of a spur of the moment idea without knowing how low their payroll will go it's hard to guess if that trade makes serious sense for the Expos, but it sure works for the Crew if the get Javier signed to an extension and Sledge fills that RF description Melvin was talking about.
  22. Did you read the article foamboy? He said they are closing their academy and are going to focus on signing a few good talents every year and have them come to Arizona instead of signing any 16 year old kid who can swing a bat and letting them play in the DR for 2-3 years before letting them washout in Arizona. There not leaving the DR they are changing tactics. It appears that Epy's plan was to drive around and look for the great unfound prospect. While other teams are going in and identifying the best prospects and not infrequently finding that the really good kids are "discovered" by more than one team and get bid up. Epy's style worked just fine when noone else was there but now everyone's there, so the great unfound prospect pretty much sucks. And frankly at the rate we'd been producing prospects we'd have been better off having scrapped the program years ago and 1) reduced debt and 2) used that extra money to afford a few more draftees even Jarrod Page. That extra 400K could easily have netted us 1-2 more good prospects from the draft each of the last few years.
  23. Again some may quibble with the move but like with canceling fall instructionals and basically changing them to early spring mini camp Doug laid out his reasons and they aren't thread-bare justification for penny pinching. Epy's record with the Brewers is unimpressive, and the Brewers clearly would have been better off not having wasted money on the program fro 10 years and used that money to sign 2 maybe even 3 of the higher profile Latin players of the last few years in a bidding war. So I'll look at this as a possible step ahead and at worst a side step.
  24. How about Saenz? Sure Brad was at HD for part of the year, but Chris slogged through the worst of it, and then gets promoted at the last second and his second appearance is to protect a 1 run lead in the 9th of the deciding game of a playoff series. Talk about night and day atmosphere changes. Can the Brewer win 3 league championships this year? That would be enough winning mindset to make Dean blush http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  25. I wonder how valuable these playoff games are to the minor league franchises as extra income? I sure hope that the playoffs can rekindle some interest in Huntsville and Beloit. The Stars should be able to look forward to seeing some more great pospects next year and I would imagine a pretty good team and Beloit should be pretty good too next year. I can't say that the Stars will win their playoff series, but I think their big offensive funk is largely over. Krynzel is still down from earlier in the year, but he's doing OK and Hart and Hardy are still out there doing there thing. This never was an offensive powerhouse team at all this season, so we need to keep that in mind.
