  1. Well here's to hoping that the Stars have managed to snap out of there funk just in time. Nothing like winning the League title to wipe out memories of a late swoon (remember a couple of years ago when the Yankees absolutely tanked the last two weeks..). Corey Hart now with an even 40 doubles that's mighty impressive, and the 25 steals are intriguing. I wouldn't mind seeing a slightly more sane version of Frankieball in Milwaukee in a few years.
  2. I'll add this link in from Baseball Primer with the authors take on Hardy, Krynzel, and Hart in the Brewer section. www.baseballprimer.com/articles/emeigh_2003-08-29_0.shtml
  3. Who exactly does Weeks think he is with that nearly .500 OBP? Barry Bonds. Aren't these college kids supposed to take a little while to adjust to wood bats. It gets harder and harder to admit that Weeks is not the top Brewer prospect. I'll holdout for awhile yet until we've seen Weeks keep it up for atleast another month. And to the folks at BP who dissed the move because of his competition: CAN YOU SEE HIM HIT NOW? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  4. Davis was hampered for much of his career by playing in Texas. Which gave him the trifecta of suspect defense, an offensive ballpark, and the DH. Expecting him to post an ERA of 4 isn't entirely unrealistic. I wonder if anybody out there is calling Doug about Doug? On a related note the next ex-Texan on the list could be a certain catcher.
  5. Well Leo's numbers after May have been not very good, and other than throwing a lot of ground balls he doesn't really profile as a good bullpen guy long term. It's quite possible that we just got the best two months of his career. Yes 6 in a row does feel pretty sweet, I wonder if there's an early candidate for player of the week already http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  6. It's been only a short time and I'm sure that there'll be rough patches and adjustments as scouting reports go out, but it looks like reports about Weeks polish with the bat were exagerrated though his defense is clearly in need of some coaching. I can live with that, the question is can the midwest league?
  7. Hah I wasn't wrong about Frost just a bit early. In case you missed it Jim he was listed as a CAT in the box score tonight. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/pimp.gif
  8. What time did that second Indy game get done? I'd bet the hustled through the in between innings except their feet were probably dragging. If any of those kids ever have a manager question their intestinal fortitude they ought to shove last night right down his throat. Do you think Cecil told the guys they could come to the park a little bit later today? OK so some people have had a chance to see Weeks play now. The question I have: were reports that Weeks wasn't as advanced as you would expect right?
  9. Fearless prediction: Chris Saenz is the ace of next years Huntsville rotation and catches all kind of surprise and excitement with people thinking he came out of nowhere. His peripheals are better than a number of other guys. Comfortably over 1K/ IP less than 1BB/ 2IP fewer hits than IP (no mean feat becaue I think HD's defense outside of West is suspect). I think he's just been plain victimized by bad luck and a lot of wind aided HRs. Of course those of us who watched Saenz fight for respect last year in Beloit won't be surprised.
  10. Hey the comma is the most used punctuation in English he needs a good break. My point was that if your tossing a non pitcher out there your either going to get lucky and he tosses a scoreless frame or he's going to get lit up. Giving up 1 or 2 runs is possible but the other two ends of the spectrum are a lot more likely, and if you bunt your betting that the team will score 1 run and maybe two depending on how you feel about the game being tied (I would not be playing for a tie at that point either which makes playing for the big inning even more obvious). Hope that helps!
  11. Your already ahead, if your tossing a non pitcher out there your odds of 1 or 2 runs scoring are much less than zero scoring plus more than 2. In short you play for the big inning because that gives you the best chance to win one insurance run isn't very reassuring.
  12. You forgot that soft tossing gets by on excellent control descriptors Kat.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif
  13. I think their are restrictions on how many position players you can send for the AFL clancy. Thus throwing a bit of a Wrench into that idea. I have no doubt that Weeks will be sent and use the below AA exemption.
  14. It's worth emphasizing that John Vandenberg has been very warm for quite awhile now raising his average to .310. It's not an empty batting average but it is a bit on the light side. Still we don't always emphasize this enough the Midwest league is a pitchers league so hitting over .300 is pretty good at that level. Some improvement in strike zone adjustment and adding some power (grab some Hardyflakes in the offseason John) could make him a very good offensive prospect. I've been a bit skeptical of sending Hardy and Krynzel to the Arizona Fall League again I'm not sure how much they would benefit from going there again. Hardy maybe a bit more since he's had fewer minor league ABs and missed a month this year. I think guys like Noochie, Nelson, and Clark could benefit more. With his recent hot streak Kade Johnson might be the best candidate of all. A hot month of August isn't a lot to go on for promoting him to AAA next year, but if he could have a good August and then go to the AFL and perform well things would look much better. Finishing up my AFL thoughts I'm always hesitant to send pitchers due to workload issues, and there aren't any obvious candidates who lost injury time as far as I can tell.
  15. BY his own words Gripp was upset about playing time, and felt that it wasn't worth the stress with his wedding coming up. I hope he makes a successful transition to other employment.
  16. THe Expos have been in limbo for 2 years but their GM has done a pretty good job with a solid package of talent handed to him. The Marlins were never in limbo, they went straight to rebuilding and acquired a boatload of young talent, so much that even the owners borderline ridiculous trades couldn't repress the team.
  17. Hey nice heads-up and to other rare posters out there Brewerfan works not just because of a few dedicated individuals, but also lots of people just doing little things too!
  18. Maybe they dropped the ball a bit there? Alternatively if Gripp had gone up DJ would have been the obvious choice to go back to Huntsville, but that would have left practically nothing at HD for offense.
  19. A variety of comments while supresing my outrage at the lack of an Arizona box score. 1) Gemoll has indeed held his own much like Varner it was something of a surprise promotion. Noochie sounds like he's an exciting defender and Gemoll is apparently pretty solid at first base. I think both have done enough to warrant promotion to AAA next year, they might not have the athletic potential of the other big names, but they have hit a comparable amount, so why not? And for those with longer memories and want proof of how far the farm system has come Brandon Gemoll makes me think of Kevin Barker as a prospect. Barker failed, but he was an OK prospect so Gemoll supporters shouldn't take that as a slight, merely a reflection that our 30th or 40th best prospect is now as good as our first prospect used to be.
  20. I could have sworn that Frost had been getting some time behind the plate. I'll go check some link reports
  21. Well I think it might lose something if done too often, Tuesdays during homestands seems pretty good that's like 10 a year or so. Anything to make the Brewers more entertaining. Of course it worked so well since it was an impromptou idea, not carefully crafted by the marketing department and hence that gimmicky feel.
  22. Stealth catching prospect Jeremy Frost with 2 walks tonight and a base hit. We may have lampooned the catcher-fest in this years draft, but between Kade, Frost, Captain Lou, and Opdyke we've got some solid catching prospects plus a couple of guys like Foster and Esparagozza who could be pretty good with some luck.
  23. Well if the Brewers are trying to give some proof that the farm system is for real Weeks shouldn't hurt, and having Manny is your scheduled starter is pretty sweet too. Of course a couple of Prince moon shots would be fun as well.
  24. I can only hope Sheets has found it for good finally. His ERA has dropped like a rock since he stopped giving up gopherballs like he was pitching in Coors. He might not be an ace, but he looks like one heck of a good #2 lots of innings and an excellent chance to win. Did Ned reveal confidential medical information?
