  1. On the plus side most of those names legitimately belong on that list. Odubel Herra and Scott Hatteberg not as much. Frank Thomas benefitting from a lot of ABs against really bad 90's pitchers (not the he needed the help).
  2. Adam McCalvy @AdamMcCalvy Replying to @AdamMcCalvy Craig Counsell on Eduardo Escobar starting a Major League game at first base before he's done any work there: "He's a baseball player. We're not sending a baseball player into a basketball game here." Amen. I love this quote. Is Craig secretly hinting at a Richie Sexson return?
  3. I reject the premise of the question. Regardless of how quantitative friendly folks are a trade is all about improving CHANCES, there are no guarantees and framing the question in that way isn't going to lead to a better understanding.
  4. Donaldson has played a bit of 1st and part of the reason I like that angle is that I can see him needing more off days at this point in his career and if he is taking some time at 3rd Urias can get a few more, and the rest of his ABs come from splitting time with Rowdy at first. On the roster management side I'd imagine Shaw is gone then and either Cain or JBJ is part of off setting the salary. The positional flexibility leans into a team strength, about the only missing portion would be if one of those IFers splitting time could double as the 5th OFer.
  5. Boras talking extension for Scherzer is Boras 101. A team motivated enough to shell out the prospects for legit ace. Obviously he has someone focused on the here an now potentially willing to overpay in the moment on a contract extension. He can just wait for a knock your socks off number in that position. Or wait to negotiate with all the teams in the offseason.
  6. The solution worth emptying the farm for won't happen, but it is Ohatani. He fills all the soft spots at once, and you maintain a competitive core for a few years even if there is no young talent left on the farm.
  7. Park factors would definitely double inflate, but I was just looking at raw OPS totals and seeing 4 or 5 of them were posting career bests. Given that almost all of them were long time Giants though just the switch to a more neutral park could be a big driver. It does mean their pitching might be better than I was giving them credit for though.
  8. I loved the nugget that he hadn't been tossed from a game in almost 10 years, and the last time was also against the Brewers.
  9. Anyone have any idea where the Giants are pulling this offense from? Almost 100 games into the season and they have a large number of guys 30+ having career years so far.
  10. Not surprised that humans could outdo the computer scheduler. So many of the things are suggestions instead of hard and fast rules that can be easily optimized.
  11. Great start by Burnes I would opt for giving someone else a mop-up inning to finish it out though.
  12. Normally I'd agree but given the strikezone today I'm sure that was going to be called a strike on 3-0 so take a rip.
  13. Did Clancy get hired to manage for a game at AAA?
  14. I am kind of excited about the Smith pick, I think that combo of height and control is so unusual there is more projection there than one might otherwise assume based on past experience.
  15. I find my interpretation of the pick is influenced somewhat by How the big league team is succeeding. Namely very deep with lot's of contributors and seemingly churning out value from utility types. And seemingly pairing that with the ability to develop pitchers in a way never before seen in Brewers history. It sort of harkens back to the 90's Braves and the Cards too. Certainly it seems like more than just 'better drafting' there is some substantial improvement in development and part of that seems like it is finding a way to make guys useful by accentuating strengths.
  16. I can't believe they didn't pull Pina after that AB. I would certainly test his throwing arm if I am the Reds and get the chance.
