  1. I had a first cousin of Paul Molitor's. Very normal kid, she took 2 years to say anything about the Molitor connection. It might be difficult with kids, but certainly associated family can be quite normal in my modest experience.
  2. I love it and the NL West is a perfect example of the benefit. Even when the Padres were still in it, the advantage of not having the 1 game playoff was a huge incentive to keep playing for all the teams involved. The Brewers were very much the exception with having a bunch of meaningless games. With the old wildcard format everyone but the NL East would have been coasting by mid September, and the Brewers even earlier if the Cards decided they never really had anything to play for. I very much like that teams are rewarded for being the best over the long season.
  3. It's functionally eleven because of the head to head nature so you get the loss you need with every win.
  4. I didn't see anyone mention it, but switching the offense to run heavy combined with quick routes and throws really helped the O-line. Rodgers not playing the run around and heave game was huge
  5. No points on the board I'd have kicked it, but for the chance to try and put a game out of reach I'm all for it. I thought the defense actually did quite well, even with the no call on the grounding it took how many goal line plays for them to score? I wonder how much fire they would have had to start the second half if that's called and they end up with nothing at the half (I can't remember if they had a timeout to preserve the clock or not).
  6. I liked going for it, and also liked that they didn't just go big to try and pick it up. That snap may have messed up the timing just enough.
  7. Valerio as a middle infielder makes a strong case, but it seems like Wiemer's to lose at this point.
  8. The link was amusing in dropping Urias to just a utility man. Under the Brewers philosophy it seems like the goal is to have at least middle infielder type who is effectively a starter in terms of ABs and playing time. Urias as a capable or better defender across the board (even if the wild throws are maddening) and very respectable bat is a great profile for that role.
  9. Texas getting stomped by Arkansas was pretty entertaining. They've been on the Michigan trajectory as a program for awhile, I wouldn't be surprised if moving to the SEC just completes that shift to second tier (at best) status. Even with the SEC hype boost a conference can only squeeze so many teams into the top 25.
  10. Zach Plesac has started all 3 times the Indians have been no-hit this year
  11. In my intro ecology class at UW the Southern part of the state was considered Oak Savannah, and there was a line where it switched over to conifers. I haven't seen that type of terminology used since so I don't know if it fell out of fashion, but my recollection of the map was that it was more of a diagonal line, and wouldn't quite fit Hwy 29. Since I've gotten a cabin out that direction though it certainly seems like there are some noticeable precipitation differences north and south of 29.
  12. That throw before it got to Jeter was right on the line, it was going to bounce for sure, but my question has always been did he actually make it get to the plate faster, since it was just a flip and a pretty short distance?
  13. I think most of the projection systems are still somewhat unfairly punishing the Giants based on expectations coming into the season and underselling them. A small lead for them with ~20 games to play calling that anything other than a toss-up at this point is claiming too much accuracy in your model.
  14. Partially because he is a lefty and we have quite a few lefties in the pen, I'd wager on Lauer being the 4th starter and Houser definitely a pen option. Also walking the pitcher with bases loaded.
  15. I'm trying to remember the explanation from a TV broadcast a couple of weeks ago, but I believe it helps him not fly open with the front shoulder.
