  1. The August numbers since he returned are better. Even June before he went down was better than May. He actually only had about half a season of AAA experience coming into the season, so there could be something there yet. Taylor stalled out forever by comparison at AAA before taking another step.
  2. Responding to the Cards question. As it stands right now they only have 3 games in September against teams under .500. They might continue to look OK for August since they still have 6 games against the Pirates and 2 more against the Tigers, but it would be an impressive feat to qualify for anything.
  3. Some other reasons to be pretty optimistic. We've already seen that the pitchers by themselves can basically play .500 ball for 6 weeks. And While nothing is guaranteed they did with stand 1 significant Covid outbreak. And we seem to have developed into a pretty consistent finisher since Stearns came on board, which seems tied to actual changes (like more rest and usage patterns) so it's not just luck. I think the playoffs odds have it about right. The Brewers could play some mediocre baseball for a month and the Reds could get really hot. Or the Brewers could play OK and the Reds play historically well for a month.
  4. The way the offense has been going maybe we should stick with undecided just in case the pitcher spot get to bat in the first inning again.
  5. In yesterday's playoff odds run at Baseball prospectus, the doubleheader sweep pushed both Chicago and the Cards playoff odds to zero, on top of the Reds taking a pretty big hit (-8.4% in a single day). And then there were last night's games. Pecota playoff odds at the start of play yesterday 97.4% with a World Series % of 12.8 trailing only the Dodgers and Houston. Fangraphs has us at 97.7% as of today to make the playoffs and 9.2% to win the World Series.
  6. The ump scorecards are somewhat useful, but the definition of consistency they use does not come remotely close to how people actually use the term. What you really want to know is when the ump has a slightly different strikezone then the computer how consistently is he calling pitches on the edges. I'm not sure from the raw data what the easiest way would be to calculate a statistic, but I can think of a few different starting points so it's not that hard to do.
  7. Yeah after not seeing him at all for 20 years I've seen him show up here and there as a villain in some shows, Warehouse 13 is one I can remember right now.
  8. Woodruff would like some of the run support Ashby gets.
  9. This would be a great time for Yelich to remember how to hit for power.
  10. Picking an OF probably makes the most sense since it is so early in the game it preserves a lot of options for later in the game.
  11. That's like taunting the sabermetric notion that batting average is meaningless.
  12. I would have figured Tellez to lead off the 7th to and then swap in JBJ for Garcia defensively in the bottom for both the best chance at some offense and the best defense.
  13. Unless he loses it Freddy should make it through 6 pretty easy, and has a decent chance now to have a complete game.
  14. Garcia might have been nervous Adames was going to catch him for the team lead in HRs.
  15. Taylor did have a cold spell of about a week were he went hitless (but still had some walks). Before that though he was coming off 4 consecutive multihit games, and then he had another one in Saturday's game to break the hitless streak. I'd say he is doing fine. If that cold spell was still going I'd be more concerned.
  16. For tomorrow I'm a big fan of the 7 inning doubleheaders, but I'm not sure in general. I do dislike the man on second for sure though and will be glad to see it go.
  17. I had failed to appreciate how over the top Eldred's usage really was. Back when Brewerfan was getting started along with pitch counts 100 was the we are about done here mark but as long as you didn't break 110 there was no significant evidence saying it was a problem, but it seemed to ramp up after that and anything over 120 was a lot and to be avoided. And even by 20 years ago it generally was. It's too bad Eldred kept pitching well enough to rack up those extra pitches. A couple of pretty good starters would have actually made a number of those 90's teams playoff contenders at least.
  18. An only modestly paranoid Giants fan could pretty easily convince themselves that the Giants just got super lucky and if they had been facing the playoff Brewers bullpen they would have lost all 3 games.
  19. Without Brandon Belt, Sanchez would have just wrapped up a save for the series sweep against the Giants no extra inning craziness...
