  1. I assume that Melvin won't do anything crazy this offseason and will mostly ride into 2014 with the 2013 roster (including several of the pitchers and position players called up over the course of the year.) To some extent I'm ok with that. I think that the team would end up playing winning baseball, which is always step 1 in my mind, but I wouldn't envision that crew making the playoffs and that is the more important goal. Unfortunately to really make a strong push for the playoffs I think that they need to go more towards the complete overhaul route. That would be a giant roll of the dice that I just don't see Melvin going for.
  2. The fact that McCann wasn't ejected is crazy to me. As Turboricky mentioned, we would be loving Lucroy if he stood up to a guy show-boating against a pitcher like that. It seemed like an over-reaction on McCann's part but the overall tactic doesn't bother me. It DOES bother me that he didn't get thrown out of the game for it. If you're going to do that stuff and play the tough guy there needs to be repercussions for it. Managers have to pick their spots when they lose there tempers or make a dramatic point because they know they'll be tossed from the game. Same should hold true for players.
  3. Turns out they rarely do their full homework on guys named Braun either...
  4. The difference in my eyes between the phone calls and other standard PR moves (major cash donations to charity, apology interviews, etc) is that this actually takes time and effort from Braun. As someone who has to spend a couple nights a month calling through lists of people that I don't know I can attest to what a slog it can be. Paying $200 for a robo call would be way easier than spending several nights working the phones. Will be interesting to see how many he gets through.
  5. Is it time to start tracking where the Brewer's would pick if the season ended today? I'm disgusted by the fact that I'm semi-serious.
  6. Selig just can't shake the steroid blemish on his career... mostly through his own poor decisions. I think Selig has done great things for baseball as a whole but his legacy was going to be tarnished by the fact that he didn't crack down on steroids when he should have. This just reeks of trying to make up for past mistakes.
  7. If we're going to consider the 2002 team the benchmark for a bad team then I'm going to say that the state of the franchise is solid. However, I have grown accustomed to a team that can compete and isn't the laughing stock of MLB. If we over performed in 2012 then we are at least under performing at a similar if not greater ratio this year. I don't think that the state of the big league team is in shambles. We're not going to the WS next year, but we should at least be playing good baseball and staying in the conversation without major overhauls and high profile free agent signings. That is more than most teams below .500 can say. That being said, the lack of impact talent in the minors scares me. I want to go back to the playoffs and I don't see the current squad the arsenal assembling in the minors getting us there. I'm honestly torn between the fire sale and rebuild for 2016 strategy and the strategy of plodding along, hoping that some pieces fall into place and then striking while the iron is hot.
  8. I don't think Gomez is the mid-season MVP but he should ABSOLUTELY be winning a Gold Glove. I don't have cable so I don't watch ESPN and Baseball Tonight - who else is even in consideration?
  9. If we're going to start signing players to extensions based off of performance so far this season, Yuni B will be a centerpiece for years to come...
  10. LOVE watching these guys put up runs right now. Getting to the bullpen early two nights in a row should help us tonight and again tomorrow.
  11. This is where having real protection for Braun would be nice.
  12. What's that Braun? You only hit HUGE homer runs? I'm not even mad, I'm impressed!
  13. Love the evening west coast games. They are the only games that start after I'm done with work. Nice to actually be able to watch the game instead of constantly flipping back and forth between my work and the MLB.tv
  14. Obviously love the winning streak under any circumstances but sweeping the Cubs just feels gives that extra little cherry on top.
  15. I will feel significantly better about our chances on any given night with Hart back in the lineup. Right now it feels like we're just making an offering to Jo-Bu and crossing our fingers every night.
  16. I really hope that they go with a short leash on all of the mid to back of the rotation guys. The key will be to stress that it isn't permanent and that they can get back to the big leagues quickly if they find they can work out the kinks.
  17. To have the ball bounce between your own legs to loss the perfect game has to be frustrating!
  18. The port o potty situation is a disaster. In my opinion it is always bad but it is flat out unacceptable on opening day. Its a super common complaint that the Brewers refuse to even acknowledge let alone address. As others have pointed out, the organization could deal with this without any major expense or loss in revenue. It baffles me that they haven't addressed this issue. I frequently find myself just taking a knee next to the car which is not ideal from a public decency or sanitation perspective.
  19. As long as we don't give up too much I would be interested in seeing what he has left. Our potential starting pitchers have so much variability in their projections - they could be better than Harang or they could be much, much worse. Harang would be someone that could toss 180 innings of predictable back end of the rotation innings. Picking him up would allow us to have a shorter leash or put less pressure on inexperienced pitching staff.
  20. I have a style of running shoe that I have been using for 6 years and now they only seem to be making them in aqua blue with bright yellow and orange streaks. I purchased them anyway but now I'm using them as an excuse not to go to the gym and run. Probably why I'm fat...
  21. I think that we'll be able to start judging the Seid years around this time next year. We'll know more about some of the potential impact players that were drafted last summer and will see if the general draft trends shift at all. It is really disappointing to me that we don't have more people up there with the decent draft slots that we have had over the past couple of seasons.
  22. Record: 83-79 Division: 3rd All Stars: Braun, Weeks Surprises: Weeks, Segura, Olmsted Disappointments: Aoki, Fiers, Hart If Weeks stays healthy he always has the potential to have a big year, but I think that staying healthy and hitting like we know he can would qualify as a surprise. I've got an uneasy feeling about Aoki and Hart matching past numbers. I just think that there will be a lot of ups and downs / inconsistent performances from our starting pitchers. We've got a lot of guys who are more than capable of throwing 7 solid innings one night and then getting shelled the next. Hard to put together a playoff season with that. edit: Should have added that I like Olmsted's chances of succeeding in the bullpen. Melvin seems to hit with these scrap heap hard throwers pretty regularly.
  23. My top album for the year was Trampled By Turtles - Stars and Satellites. Some great tracks on there. In a similar genre, "bluegrass" bands that are pushing the boundaries and making music accessible to non-bluegrass fans, The Infamous Stringdusters - Silver Sky should get a mention. A couple of others that have been mentioned already: Alabama Shakes - Boys and Girls Jack White - Blunderbuss Of Monsters and Men - My Head is an Animal
  24. There is a Dick Cheney joke in here somewhere....
  25. I enjoyed following Parra as a prospect and hope that he is able to find success someplace else. That being said, I'm glad DM pulled the plug.
