  1. He exposed a system of cheating instead of being silenced by some nonsensical code. That's courageous. And since the A's compete in the same division as the Astros, he was also delivering a competitive advantage to his current team.
  2. I wonder what Brandon Taubman's role was in this. He went from fired misogynist to being on the permanently banned list. He suffered the worst punishment of all, and so far, I haven't read what he did to deserve this. And good for Crane for firing these guys. It's been a tough couple of days to be a Houston sports fan.
  3. I like the hammer of justice when it's levied against others. I wonder what I would think if this were Stearns and Counsell and the Brewers draft picks. The Astros and Red Sox have done enough winning to salve this wound. If they find a team that hasn't won, but cheated like this, that could really set back an organization. From a day-to-day standpoint, the Astros have some work to do to find replacements for Luhnow and Hinch. The bigger news story will be when the Red Sox get their punishment.
  4. Apparently he wants to top the $6.25 that Papelbon got as a 1st year arby in 2009. That's the record, and hard to believe it hasn't been topped in 10 years. He is used in a unique way, and has been effective at a very high rate. I have a hard time seeing him not winning his case.

  6. Your name is SeaBass and you refuse to eat any seafood except the most basic kind. That's curious. I appreciate the irony. But seafood is so icky! Plank grilled salmon...Jumbo lump crab cakes...Spicy Tuna Sushi Roll...Jambalaya...Cioppino...Broiled whitefish with a little lemon juice, olive oil, garlic and capers...you're missing out on great food! Step away from the fish sticks!

  10. Coffee has been served with dessert in fine dining restaurants for many years, so if people grew up with that experience, then I can see them expecting the two to go together. And the hot liquid helps melt away some of the stickiness of cake frosting, pie filling, etc. So while it may be generational, it's also not without merit.
  11. I'm with you. I might have 5 cups of coffee per year, only black, and only if I'm having dessert in a restaurant. We have the same coffee maker that we had on our wedding registry 31 years ago, it gets used that infrequently.
  12. This seems like a good move both from a baseball perspective and a business one. Counsell seems like a good or even great manager. The players respond to him, there have been no mutinies or other signs that he's getting tiresome for them. And on a team that is close to the end with their franchise player and so much roster churn, Counsell serves very well as a connection to the fanbase.
  13. Keith Law has left ESPN and is now at The Athletic. Law gets ripped with some justification, but he was still contributing baseball content at ESPN. Not sure if they're making less of a baseball commitment or if they'll backfill his position.
  14. Best post of the offseason! Congratulations on your progress!
  15. I hope Nelson comes back strong and effective. The Brewers have been so unproductive at developing top line starting pitchers that it would be great to see one of their guys really excel--even if it's somewhere else.
  16. He still gets to play baseball and you'll still get to see him on tv, but he's not on the Brewers any more. The team that won the championship wanted him more. He loved playing here, but now he gets to play with them. The Brewers have a whole new group of players to watch and learn about, and maybe some of them will be as fun and good as Thames.
  17. Jake Ferguson says hey. Ha! That's what I get for diving into unfamiliar waters.
  18. Barry Alvarez = Bad Grandpa. https://ftw.usatoday.com/2020/01/barry-alvarez-rose-bowl-grandson-wave-game-wisconsin-oregon/amp Though to be fair, the Rose Bowl maybe isn't the best time and place for Bring Grandson to Work Day.
  19. I think if FSN were getting a $60 million product but only paying $25 million for it, they would be able attract more lucrative advertisers than Pizza Ranch and Gruber Law Offices.
  20. I'm reminded of how much I enjoyed watching Carlos Gomez play. He was maddening at times, but when he excelled, he was so much fun.
  21. Best wishes to him. If he starts strong, he'll become a fan favorite. Not sure what this means for Vlad, Jr, though maybe Shaw will spend more time at 1B.
  22. I like the concept a lot. I worry about the speed and consistency. We already suffer through the dead time of challenges, what happens when the automated system fails? I guess we'll find out.
  23. To me, the only good thing about the Smoak deal is the contract. That's not nothing, as every Brewers deal seems to be viewed through that prism. But he looks to be the least productive 1B in the division, and his performance is trending downward. Maybe he hits in Miller Park and plays passable defense, but on the surface, he looks like a below average player with easily replaceable skills.
  24. Keston Huira to Rays for Tyler Glasnow. Who says no? Not me. I would make that trade.
  25. Something has to be up. I can't see them paying Sogard (or anyone) $4.5 million to be a part time player. Maybe they're sending Hiura off for a SP.
