  1. I am 28 years older than Jed Bradley, to the day. . . 6/12/62. The benefit is that I've been a Brewers fan since 1970, though looking at pics of Kuenn makes me realize that I'm not young.
  2. I just realized that I am the same age that Harvey Kuenn was when he was managing the Brewers in 1982. He was a physical wreck who looked about 15 years older than he was, but still. . .
  3. If nothing else, this Red Sox sweep will get a huge overreaction on Buster's podcast.
  4. I'm not a fan of the gold. I have some color blindness, but to me, that color looks like brown mustard. I also don't like metallic gold thread, and I don't like the dark blue jerseys. I really like home white and road grey. I like high pants with stirrups and white socks and black shoes. I know my 1950s color scheme would fail in the gift shops, so I'm stuck in the past.
  5. I ripped Braun for months and was ready to move him to the highest bidder. But he has been consistently apologetic, and has done more than most PED guys (perhaps ANY PED guy) to get back in good graces with the fans. Whether that was his doing or not, I don't much care. . .and I understand that he's never going to come totally clean about his life's history with PEDs, he's not going to give back the MVP award, etc. Still, he served his suspension, he apologized, he's forever marked as a cheater. And still, he's our guy. My ire has run out. I don't get any pleasure by being conflicted at the ballpark on whether I should cheer or not cheer, or stand or sit, or check in with Bob Costas on how I should behave. The prodigal son has returned. And after 6 months of crap weather in this freezer of a climate, it's finally baseball season, and I want to cheer for my team. If that is met with Bob Nightengale's displeasure, then I'll live with that.
  6. KRod got the save, so there shouldn't be an issue. If Henderson is torqued off, then so be it. Take the job back.
  7. I don't think I want one, but I think it's a great idea. Hank the bobblehead doesn't satisfy my desire to have a Lew Krausse bobblehead, but they don't need to sell the Brewers experience to me and guys like me. Every year, there is a new batch of 8-year olds who are just starting to get into the Brewers. So if it's racing sausages, or Bernie, or a stray dog, they're right to try to get kids to the park--and anyone else who needs a nudge to get interest in the team. After the Braun suspension, they could use a boost of joy, and that stupid celebrity dog is perfect for that. The Hank story is the perfect rags-to-riches story, and one that humanizes the team and its players. And while I'd rather see them have 5 guys on the Baseball America top 50, you find happiness where you find it.
  8. Same for me. It's an impressive presentation for a 20-game package, with tickets and parking passes printed in personalized spiral bound books. We also requested and received F&B/gift shop vouchers in a separate envelope. But no Segura bobblehead, and no reference to it. As professional as the rest of the package was, I'm pretty confident they'll handle the bobblehead thing just fine.
  9. Record: 76-86 All Stars: Gomez, Braun Biggest Surprise: Roenicke isn't the manager at the end of the year Biggest Disappointment: Segura, Davis, Henderson Playoffs: No Place in the Division: 4th NL Playoff Teams: Dodgers, Cardinals, Nats, Pirates, D-Backs AL Playoff Teams: Angels, Tigers, Red Sox, Indians, Rays World Series: Dodgers over Red Sox
  10. I like the Hank story, and it's a good way for the Brewers organization to get some nice publicity. Part of me wishes Hank were a bit more nasty, and nippy, and maybe if he had an irritable bowel that would be funnier. But while we're stuck in the endless winter, with nothing much of interest in spring training, Hank is a nice diversion.
  11. Jim Irsay is 54 years old. In the video from his arrest, he looks like he's 75.
  12. I know one of the guys behind this site: http://www.awingthing.com/ Lots and lots and lots of reviews of Milwaukee area chicken wing providers. I think Wing Stop on Miller Park Way (south of the stadium) is a fine place with a variety of flavors. I'm not a big fan of their sugar/salt mixture that they put on their fries, but you can request them plain, and then salt your own. I don't really like Quaker Steak or Buffalo Wild Wings, but they're both pretty popular, so it's probably just a matter of taste.
  13. No cowboy stuff or country music. And the boots were more like Hush Puppies suede boots that were cut to the height of high top basketball shoes, but with two eyelets and crepe or gum rubber soles. In any case, they missed badly on that one. . .I think. Though I do remember them as being pretty comfortable. . .
  14. What is it about my shopping or browsing history makes Amazon think I would be interested in desert boots? Do they know that I wore a pair in 1975 when I was in Junior High?
  15. I am finished being angry at Braun for his PED violation and suspension. I will not forget his violation of our trust, but it doesn't do me any good to keep expecting more information on his drug history. He's served his suspension. He reached out to fans, he has been exposed as a cheater and liar, and he's shown contrition. He doesn't need to forfeit his MVP award, because it's tainted. It's clear to everyone that it's meaningless, so having it or not having it doesn't matter. It's not like the voters are going to cast their votes again for Kemp or a different guy.
  16. I was disappointed last year when the Brewers signed Lohse instead of Dempster. Shows how much I know. It's really unusual for a guy to walk away from that much money. I can't say that I would do it.
  17. I'm excited by this signing. . .it's still a longshot that he plays at a high level in the majors, but it's a sign that the Brewers are in the mix on highly regarded foreign talent.
  18. I don't condone abuse obviously, but charges were dropped, so we don't necessarily know everything. Though I'm sure he did something wrong, we don't know and are jumping to conclusions that aren't necessarily fair. A quick Google search will show that the Waukesha County incident is not the only one in Mr. Rodriguez's history. I appreciate "innocent before proven guilty" in the eyes of the law. But I'm not going to let the court's action or inaction determine what I think of someone. There's enough noise out there about him that gives me reason to think there have been times when he's not been a good guy. Others are free to reach their own conclusions.
  19. I have been listening to podcasts from WFAN from Ron Darling, Bobby Valentine, Howie Rose, Gary Cohen & Keith Hernandez talking to Mike Francesa and Steve Somers about Kiner. He must have been a tremendous guy, based on the reverence poured out about him. It's stunning that he was in baseball from the time he was a teenager until he was 91. Tony Kornheiser describes someone who lives that long as "outkicking his coverage", meaning that his greatness is often overlooked at the time of his death, since there aren't many left who bore witness to it. I think that's true of Kiner the player. And his broadcasting was almost exclusively with the Mets, so he didn't really shine brightly outside of the New York viewing area. So he was a huge figure, but mostly in a different time and place. By all accounts, he was very generous with autograph requests. He reminds me a little like Harmon Killebrew, who was also revered as a true gentleman. Rest in Peace, Mr. Kiner.
  20. I don't like guys who beat up women, even if they play sports.
  21. No offense taken. If and when I display ignorance on a subject, I'm fine with being steered in the right direction. Thankfully, I have not had drug use/abuse issues in my family, so I'm an outsider when it comes to diagnoses, treatment, causes, etc. In the days after Hoffman's death, the news reports sound as if he had been struggling with this for awhile. It's especially sad that he was so gifted in his art, and so tormented by his addiction.
  22. That's a good response, Baldkin, and I'm not trying to take the Nancy Reagan approach to drugs. I want to be respectful of those with the disease. I just don't know what things can be attributed to a diseased brain and what things are due to bad decisions.
  23. That's a bad way to go, alone, on the floor of your bathroom with a heroin needle in your arm. I'm certainly sad for his kids. They are much too young to have to deal with the loss of their father. And I'm sad that he was addicted to heroin. I guess I just don't understand addiction. We've known for years and years that the stuff is addicting, and that it can be fatal. So I don't understand why someone would try it even once. Death wish? Overconfidence in one's ability to not become addicted? Impulse control? An inability to put off today for better tomorrows? I understand that some people are just wired with addictive personalities, and we all have personal demons. I'm thankful that my own demons are too many doughnuts and bouts of laziness. It's a shame that he died, just as it's a shame when anyone dies from something that seems avoidable.
  24. Free Wily! Henderson seems to be in Danny Kolb/Mike Fetters mold as far as career impact. And Garza hasn't done anything just yet. Peralta is my default choice. He's a product of the farm system, and has at least been a player of promise. My personal choice would be along the lines of Lew Krausse/Marty Pattin/Gene Brabender/Skip Lockwood, etc. But I like to reminisce.
  25. There are several Hall of Famers who have plaques without logos. With Maddux and LaRussa, they each had enough of an impact with more than one team to leave their caps blank. The plaques themselves will have a record of who they were with during their careers--like with all Hall of Famers. I don't think it's really a big deal. They're honoring the men.
