  1. The Brewers Clubhouse shop at Miller Park bugs me. Specifically their insistence on carrying so many variations of the ultra thin t-shirts, and so few of the traditional weight shirts. Someone also convinced them to go with the microfiber tech polo shirts at the expense of traditional cotton polos. The next guy I see who looks good in that DriFit material will be the first. And I have been stopping by there regularly to buy a traditional weight long sleeved t-shirt to no avail.
  2. The old Park Avenue disco/nightclub was the site for some small concerts back in the day, and I saw Spyro Gyra there sometime either in 1979 or 1980. I wasn't 18 yet, though that didn't seem to matter, as it was a ticketed event. I think it was assigned seating, but I'm not sure how they did it in a non-theater setting.
  3. Just read John Thorn's tweet that Robert Creamer passed away today. He was 90 and was one of the guys who offered commentary in the Ken Burns Baseball documentary. Great storyteller, great writer. 90 is a full life, and he was a great contributer in his later years. Thanks for the terrific work, Mr. Creamer. Rest in Peace.
  4. DirecTV and Viacom's dispute + a daughter on summer vacation who likes Nickelodeon is bugging me. I don't want a partial refund or free movie channels or an upgrade to my DVR service. I want kid channels back. I'm running out of ideas here.
  5. Bob Betts, for the record. "Drive . . . .home . . . . safely!" I can hear it right now, plain as day. For me it is: "Please do not interfere with the ball when it is in play. Thank You." Weird how some things just stick with you.
  6. I'm probably in the minority, but I love the AJ storyline. Crazy = unpredictable, which is something that's been missing for awhile. Other than the Punk/Bryan/AJ stuff last night's show was pretty bad. When they burn up time with Santino AND Hornswoggle AND a King v. Michael Cole match, AND a Heath Slater appearance, AND a Funkasaurus squash, that's a lot of filler. Hard to see how they're going to go 3 hours with that stuff.
  7. Love the newish State Farm commercial with Kerry Wood pullling stuff out of the ivy. Awesome ending, though I don't want to ruin it for others who haven't seen it.
  8. I would not include fans, grounds crew, ushers, vendors, or anyone else who isn't involved in the baseball aspect of the team. I would put Del Crandall, George Scott & Teddy Higuera at the top of the list for future inductees.
  9. I bet that Mrs. H5 cleans the bathroom. The tote routine is fair if she does the same thing. I was thinking more in terms of using medicine cabinets, drawers, or whatever. She does and she does. I would like to think that I'm not a slob, and in other parts of the house she's not so particular, but in our house the bathroom isn't clean enough until someone can perform surgery on any surface. The quirks of life..
  10. Or there's a deal in the works to move Greinke. . .
  11. I agree with others who suggest he might have been using something so that he could play through an injury, or more quickly rebound from an injury. I also think it is entirely reasonable to think he's completely innocent. And like rluzinski, I don't think his 2012 season has anything to do with what happened last year. What still bothers me is his statement from earlier that the whole truth is yet to be told. And yet it remains untold. He knows something about the case that I don't, and I don't like being an outsider to the truth.
  12. I'm not sure I agree. Though my wife agrees with you. I have been given a fine looking leather open top tote with instructions to keep my toiletries inside this tote, to bring the tote out when I'm using the stuff, and then return the tote back into hiding when I am finished. To me, that seems like an unnecessary step, when I could just leave my stuff out on the counter, since I'm going to use it again the next day. I see the bathroom as a utility space to serve my need to keep clean, where my wife sees the relationship differently, where instead, it is my role to keep the bathroom clean. And so that's what I do. But only because the whole tote routine is less unpleasant than listening to complaints if I didn't use it.
  13. I have DirecTV in Brookfield and like it, but I do have issues with rainy weather. When it rains, I am often disappointed to see "Searching for Signal". I haven't tried to switch over to standard def during those times..that's a good suggestion. We use it mostly for sports and kid viewing, so I can't offer any help with On Demand, Premium Channels, etc. I have TWC as an internet provider, so when the TV is frozen, I'll go online for info.
  14. Based on eBay, I'd say that's a decent price. Though I would say there's also some risk since it's not graded. It could be fake, it could be trimmed, it could be a 3 instead of a 6. . .it depends on how badly you want the card and how much you'd be bummed if those turned out to be true. Good Luck. . .I don't want to wreck your party, just want to be a devil's advocate. Otherwise, go for it!
  15. It's fun to have a strong-armed catcher throwing guys out, but I'll take offense over that if I can get it. And I need to have a manager who will play for the big inning when that good hitting catcher is on the team.
  16. My trips to the bathroom are seldom amazing or epic!
  17. Speaking from the perspective of one who has worked either on or in close contact with a university campus for over 20 years, I fully agree. I concur. I am most bothered by this when I pop in while my wife is watching an HGTV-type show about decorating/renovating, etc. Every time the new room is revealed, the homeowner finds something that they are amazed by. Maybe it's a throw pillow, maybe it's a floor lamp, maybe it's a side table. Whatever it is, it is declared "amazing", often through tears. I have never been amazed by an ottoman or a bowl of lemons. The rooms are often fine, and sometimes really great. But a grouping of furniture should not amaze anyone.
  18. He's trailing Eric Chavez, Mark Ellis and Orlando Hudson in career WAR and is 45th among active players. Maybe BR overstates the value of defense, but those numbers are striking. Among active 1B/DH, he's behind Pujols, Thome, Helton, Berkman, Giambi, Teixeira, Miguel Cabrera & Ortiz. His career WAR so far is 26.2, putting him 522nd among offensive players. There are some Hall of Famers with low career WARs, but they are also the guys on everybody's list considered as least qualified (Rick Ferrell 26.3; Freddie Lindstrom 26.8; George L. Kelly 23.4; Ray Schalk 25.0; Lloyd Waner 22.0, etc). They were also inducted at a time when politics and favors were more important than stats. I can't see that kind of thing happening in today's time. There are other guys from this current era who are or aren't borderline Hall of Famers with much more value: John Olerud 53.7 Will Clark 53.2 Robin Ventura 52.3 Jeff Kent 51.9 Bernie Williams 45.9 In his very best year, 2010, Konerko was a 4.3 WAR player. He's 36 now, so if you want to project him for another 12-14 points, that puts him around 40 WAR for his career. . . In other words, "You can put it on the boooooooard. . ." No.
  19. The Hall of Fame is a museum, independent of MLB. Bud Selig is on the Board of Directors, as is Jerry Reinsdorf, Bill DeWitt, David Glass & Paul Beeston. So it's not really independent of MLB. And walk the corridors and display cases of the Museum. You'll see lots of Rose stuff on display. I've been there probably a dozen times (hopefully going back this November). It's a fabulous place that doesn't hide Pete Rose at all. The Museum shows Rose stuff & Bonds stuff & Joe Jackson & Mark McGwire stuff. It is the official historic archive of baseball history. It's possible to tell the story of baseball history without inducting these guys. The Museum part of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum does that.
  20. Here are the HOF hitters who were active in the AL during Walter Johnson's career: Frank Baker Ty Cobb Mickey Cochrane Eddie Collins Jimmy Collins Earle Combs Sam Crawford George Davis Jimmie Foxx Elmer Flick Lou Gehrig Charlie Gehringer Goose Goslin Harry Heilmann Willie Keeler Napoleon Lajoie Tony Lazzeri Heinie Manush Sam Rice Babe Ruth Ray Schalk Joe Sewell Al Simmons George Sisler Tris Speaker Bobby Wallace
  21. There is a newer commercial for FatHead where a guy is choking on a chicken wing and the FatHead Justin Verlander comes to life and saves the choking man by firing a baseball into his chest, sort of like a Heimlich maneuver. I don't if I'm bugged so much by the commercial as I am horrified. First the choking guy's friends are just standing there while their friend is on a quick path toward death, then they have Verlander firing a ball right into the guy's chest. Little Leaguers have died from being struck by baseballs, and yet that's the punchline in this commercial. FatHeads are marketed to fans of all ages, and it seems ignorant that they would advertise this way.
  22. Anyone who has been to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum knows that Pete Rose is well represented there. There are probably more Rose items on display than there are of Robin Yount. They haven't erased him from history, they don't pretend he didn't exist. He does not have a plaque hanging in the gallery, and he's not a "Hall of Famer" because he's disqualified from being one. Insider gambling is different from you and I playing online poker, or betting on the Belmont Stakes, or throwing down money on the Super Bowl. Baseball is an industry and when insiders bet on games, they threaten the existence of the industry. The legitimacy of the sport is compromised. When insiders bet on games, there is a reason to suspect that they could also throw games. Rose was a fabulous player who would otherwise be qualified to be honored by the Hall of Fame, but it's unreasonable to expect the Hall to bring honor to someone whose actions threatened baseball's legitimacy.
  23. What is interesting about a solo XXXL guy wearing a stained XL banana costume? After "So what's with the costume, and how do you pee?", what else is there? At least with FRA, you could ask how she gets her tickets, what she thinks of her fame, what does she do for fitness. . . Understand that I said YOU could ask. I'm in the family section with my wife and daughter, and me chatting up busty women is generally frowned upon in the H5 household.
  24. Money was a vastly better player than Loretta. He had a 106 OPS+ vs. a 98 for Loretta. Money was a 4-time All Star, Loretta went twice. Money has a career WAR of 33.3, Loretta's is 16.6. Money was a plus defender, Loretta played more games at other positions, but the metrics show he was below average. Money set a record for consecutive errorless games at 3rd. Money stole more bases and at a higher percentage than Loretta.
  25. The longer these otherwise obvious candidates are kept out based on steroid suspicion, the longer it will be debated, which just draws more negative attention. It's probably time to just read the numbers and vote...these guys were allowed to play, and the numbers all counted in major league games. The Hall of Fame doesn't want it that way. From the HOF's website on how the BBWAA should consider candidates: 5. Voting: Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played. It's not just about putting up numbers. They included integrity, character and sportsmanship for a reason. And yes, Cobb, Landis, Anson and others failed in those areas--but I wouldn't force today's BBWAA to have the same interpretation as did the writers of yesteryear. It's a 15 year ballot for a reason. There's bound to be disagreements that take time to settle, and often you can't see the impact of the times until there is some distance. I don't see why a backlog of candidates would be terrible. It would just show the process in action.
