  1. It's tough to take BA seriously when there new rankings don't recognize Grisham as a top 100 prospect. He's an athletically gifted 22 year old killing it at AAA. He's a top 25 prospect right now. They are dead on though about how Melvin is still killing the Brewers with his era of incompetence on the international market. It will take a few more years to overcome that.
  2. The whole point of this exercise is comparing tools and style, and not stats. And I'd argue that style- and tool-wise, Corey Ray is a carbon copy of a young Ray Lankford. Of course, sometimes unfortunately substance and style don't always coincide. Hitting is one of the 5 tools. Lankford had it as a minor leaguer, Ray doesn't.
  3. Yes, i’ve watched them play baseball. And I stand by my comparison. Besides the fact that, you know, Broxton stands nearly 4 inches taller, has a much longer swing, and, of course, bats right handed. But other than that ... twins! Honestly, they are completely different types of players. Ray generates his power with a short, quick stroke, not unlike a player like Ray Lankford. Broxton's swing is long and powerful when he makes contact. Sort of a very poor man's Devon White or Mike Cameron. Corey Ray doesn't compare to Lankford at all. Lankford wasn't a strikeout guy in the minors, and was a productive hitter. He was in the majors by age 23.
  4. Grisham with his 3rd AAA homer. The game has gotten easy for him. He's still drawing walks, he doesn't strikeout, and he's just 22.
  5. Ray is more comparable to Jackie Bradley Jr. than he is of Keon Broxton. In what way? Bradley consistently made contact throughout his career, while Ray is a strikeout machine. Bradley had an outstanding sophomore season in college, was really good in his first full pro season, and earned his way to the majors by age 23.
  6. Ok, so it was random and even more pointless. And you weren't agreeing with another posters statement. That statement said Grisham was now our best OF prospect over Ray AND Lutz(more on him in a second). You then were somehow shocked that Ray was ever considered a good prospect. Not that you agreed Grisham had surpassed him, merely that he was ever highly regarded. But we're going to use BA and K's to rank how good a prospect is. Yet Tristen Lutz is still a "great" prospect. What did he do last year in A ball? 139 K's, .245 BA. So did I just pretty much sum up Tristen Lutz and his potential as a "prospect?" Ok, back to the topic-TRENT GRISHAM. Interesting that you completely ignore that Lutz was a 19 year old in A ball, yet he was still better than Ray was when he was at the same level after playing 3 years of college baseball. What's amazing about Grisham, is that to properly compare him to Ray at the same age, Grisham would need to play in AA again next year. That won't be happening. Grisham has 8 homes since May 24th. What an amazing run. As others have mentioned, he also is doing it with his usual ultra patient approach.
  7. Yup. It still blows my mind that people thought Ray was a good prospect. Lutz is still a great prospect though, he's just too young yet, just like Grisham was. Ray, on the other hand, will be 25 in a few months. When will Grisham go to AAA? After the break? Why exactly does it blow your mind that people THOUGHT Corey Ray was a good prospect? He was unquestionably a good prospect. He had/has all the talent needed to be a very good player. Athletic and toolsy OF'ers with a hit tool that's lagging behind are boom or bust type guys, but that's hardly rare and that's kinda what being a prospect is. Of Ray's class, the entire 1st round thus far has produced.....wait for it....-.6 WAR. So it's not like his class is killing it while he's turned into an old man. What's more, Grisham being a good prospect has nothing to do with people "thinking" that Ray WAS a good prospect. This post makes very little sense to me and seems rather disjointed. One has very little to do with the other. Though if you want to compare them, lets wait until Grisham's entire season at AA is done. Ray put up a pretty big year last year at AA and while he was at the ripe old age of 23 when he did that(as opposed to the young 22 year old Grisham) it was still pretty impressive. I have one dog in this, and that's the Brewers. So I love seeing a kid with tools like Grisham has putting them together. I see very little reason to dog Ray though while he's dealing with injuries in San Antonio. Ray hit 239 last year with a whopping 176 strikeouts. Not really impressive at all. He's been grossly overrated since draft day, or even before. He didn't improve in college either. I didn't intend to aimlessly dog him, I was just agreeing with another posters statement, and adding to it.
  8. Blows past Ray and Lutz to easily be our #1 outfield prospect. Hoping he’s promoted soon to AAA, to see if he can maintain his dominance up a level. Yup. It still blows my mind that people thought Ray was a good prospect. Lutz is still a great prospect though, he's just too young yet, just like Grisham was. Ray, on the other hand, will be 25 in a few months. When will Grisham go to AAA? After the break?
  9. Eddy Tavarez reportedly tops out at 99 mph. Fun.
  10. I like what the Brewers did in this draft, and I'm super impressed with Todd Johnson. I think we'll sign 30+ players out of this draft. I like how we're heavily involved with juco players.
  11. My guy for our next pick is OF Jordan Brewer. Not just the right name, he had a big junior year at Michigan after being at a juco. Athletic and could still be on the rise.
  12. Remember pre Steans and Johnson when the Brewers would ignore strikeout pitchers in the draft? Glad those days are long gone.
  13. Small is similar to a left handed Freddy Peralta. He gets that extension in his delivery so his fastball plays up. Like others have said, ridiculous K totals, much like the steal we picked last year, Ashby. Only difference is, this guy did it against the best competition.
  14. That was kinda what I was thinking. I wonder if they had a framework for a deal in place. All I know is when the Brewers take a guy that everyone seems excited about, it'd been a bit of a bust in recent years, the guys who don't get praised as much by the pundits seem to end up having more success. Should be big savings here, as Small is a 4th year junior.
  15. Out of left field, but fits a mold we have success with. Huge strikeout totals with a dominant pitch. I like it actually.
  16. I wasn't thinking a HS pick going in, but it looks like we might have a shot aft Gunnar Henderson. That's exciting. He's kind of another Turang.
  17. Braves take Shewmake this early? Very questionable, he just doesn't have the offensive production. Both of their 1st round picks are low ceiling.
  18. That I'd love, but he'll never make it this far. Edit: Wow, a few more mocks are showing Hoese lasting to us, that would be a no brainer. Always a contact hitter, he became a masher this year after putting on some muscle.
  19. I love the idea of a bat first 1B too, but Busch just hadn't hit as well at NC as his hype suggests. I find him underwhelming.
  20. He's just young, he never lost prospect status. Important to remember that he's 26 months younger than Corey Ray. I think we always knew he wouldn't be a true CF, but we have a huge future need for a LF. He'll eventually be a defensive asset there. Great to see the power arrive, especially considering how thin we are now in OF prospects.
  21. Except the posters here who called the Brewers idiots for not giving Hiura TJ surgery immediately after drafting him. They can sit quietly for another week, then join the party. Hiura already batting clean up today. So huge to have another home grown superstar. He is almost perfect, and still just 22. Well done Brewers.
  22. Shewmake over McConnell would be an incredible disappointment. McConnell has better tools in every category, especially arm and power, but has a better hit tool too. Shewmake is a slightly more inspiring clone of Allemand, not someone with a big league future. No worries though, Tod Johnson was promoted to the top spot because he doesn't ignore the numbers. We'll get someone exciting.
  23. I agree that they'll go with a bat. I'll predict their guy will be Brady Mcconnell. Draft eligible sophomore having a big year at the plate. Great athlete, highly rated out of high school, plays SS.
