  1. I wouldn't let him find out. I'd deal weathers for him. The Braves could then buyout Weathers for $500 K instead of Hudson for $ 1 million. I'd pick up the option on Hudson. Then we avoid trhe risk of a multi-year deal. Hudson will get a very big deal in the open market. Oliver Perez got 3 years $36 million last year, and he's never been 5 WAR. Hudson has 4 times. Hudson will do well.
  2. Looper has never been 1.8 WAR in his career and he's 35. He's terrible, he never should have been signed, and he will only get worse. Doug Melvin has absolutly no understanding of pitching, and thats why he's fielding a bad team. Pitching is all about finding guys with upside, Looper has none. The Brewers should pool there money together for someone who at least has a chance to be good, like Tim Hudson. Hudson has only made 5 starts this year, yet is still worth more WAR than each of Looper, Bush, and Suppan. Hudson would give us a guy who would at least have a chance to be 4 WAR. Hudson, combined with any scrub, like Mike Burns, would be more WAR than Bush and Looper combined, for the same money.
  3. Your likely right, they won't even consider it. Melvin likely has no idea he's not a good pitcher, as Melvin hasn't shown that he has any idea what good pitchers are. Of course, I keep holding out hope that past results have just been a fluke, and Melvin shows that he fully understands pitching this offseason.
  4. Why would you even consider bringing back Kendal when you could sign Henry Blanco just as cheap or cheaper, and get a plyer who is superior both offensively and defensively? If you curve Blanco's stats for park effects, he has a higher OPS than Suzuki. His offense is stronger either way because of the advantage he's carrying in the more important portion, OBA.
  5. Bush wasn't hurt last year, yet he was still just 1 Win Above Replacement. He's not good. The Brewers will have to at least consider non-tendering him after this season. He'll likely make about $4 million next year, and its kind of a gray area if he's worth that. He just has little upside. This team needs 2 more quality starting pitchers to contend next year. Luckily we have a number a valuable pieces to move. Gerut helps create that surplus.
  6. I agree completely. Blanco has become one of the more undervalued guys in the game now thats he's become a tollerable hitter. Its unreal that he played for $850 K this year while Kendal collected $5 million.
  7. Suppan has been hot lately, but is still below replacement level for the season, for the 2nd year in a row.
  8. One of Gamel or McGehee will be traded for a pitcher. The other will be our starting 3B. Whichever it is, we'll be better with the addition of a pitcher, if Melvin can identify a worthwhile pitcher.
  9. Bradley has been a good hitter in the past, sometimes even great, but he doesn't fit in the NL. He's a DH. He's made of glass. Only once in his career played more than 109 games in the field, and that was when he was 26. He'll be 32 next year. He'd be a good fit for an AL team, but not us.
  10. Blackburn will be 28 to start next year, he's 4 years older than Gallaro, and yet isn't as good. Blackburn doesn't miss bats, his K rate is an embarassing 4.05K/9. Thats horrible. His average FB is 2 MPH slower than Gallardo. Theres nothing interesting about Blackburn. Blackburn is just .9 WAR better than Hardy this year, and Hardy was worth more WAR in 2008 than Blackburn is in 2008 and 2009 combined! The Twins need pitching. These guys they have in their rotation now are devoid of upside.
  11. I think another question is "Would anyone else feel comfortable with Gerut as our starting RF?" Its possible Hart is dealt for pitching, opening that spot for Gerut. Gerut had a very strong OPS last year, and is red hot now.
  12. Trade our best prospect for a catcher with a 304 OBA when we're desperate for starting pitching? I wouldn't even consider it. Briggs, you are right that Oakland is desperate for bats, especially a 3B. McGehee for Dallas Braden makes sense for both teams. They have the same service time and WAR value. If Gamel can replace McGehee, Braden makes us 2-3 wins better than whichever starter he replaces here.
  13. I completely agree with this. Vazquez makes us 5-6 wins better next year, but eats up alot of salary, and is a FA after the year. McGehee fills Atlanta's longterm need, a righthanded hitting 3B, for the next 5 years. We give up alot, but we get 1 pitcher closer to contending next year.
  14. Perkins isn't coming off a down year, this is all the better he is, he was lucky before this. His stuff is very mediocre. Delmon Young is wretched. He's below replacement level for the 2nd year in a row. He was clearly a juicer who is a shell of his enhancer former self. He doesn't belong in the majors. The Twins pitching was bad this year. Only 3 AL teams have worse ERAs. They have the same need we do. Despite there soft middle infield, they still score enough runs.
  15. The Braves have an outstanding 1B prospect in Freddie Freeman, their not looking to add Fielder.
  16. The reason I say Escobar will be more useful at 29 than 23 is because he is currently a below replacement level player. If anyone expects him to be a below replacement level player at 29, then I don't know why were even talking about this guy. I think he could be real good at 29. Counsel is better than Escobar right now, its really that simple. Hardy and Escobar are unconnected. Hardy if we don't get a good offer, should be our starting SS next year. If we do get a worthwhile offer, which I'd expect, then Counsel should get the starting job he's earned. When Escobar becomes a worthwhile hitter in AAA, bring him up. Rushing players when we have viable alternatives is pointless.
  17. Wouldn't AAA be a great place to work on plate discipline? Sending him their to work on it, and defensive consistency too.
  18. Hardy has been 1.3 WAR, Escobar has been below replacement level. He's been fun to watch defensively, but also sloppy and unproductive.
  19. But what if the other GMs main goal is to improve his team, and he needs a SS? Is it more important to put the screws to a team, or is it more important to fill your holes? The Orioles look to be pretty good in 2011, and would be better if they had Hardy.
  20. This is awesome news. I'm assuming they wouldn't do this if he wasn't going to start. He is an exciting prospect with power stuff. I've been promoting him since late April. I've had to endure numerous threads that called him a nobody, even one where numerous people agreed with his non-placement on the P50. This is sweet vindication. I'm excited for him, and the Brewers.
  21. Al, your using completely out of date numbers. Atlanta addressed this months ago, with success. They traded Jeff Francuer for Ryan Church. Church's career OPS is well above average. They benched Garret Anderson, who was getting 2/3 of the starts in LF as part of a platoon. They promoted his platoon partner, Matt Diaz, who has blossomed with the added playing time. He now has an 885 OPS. Atlanta also has Jason Heyward, a RF who was just named Baseball America's Minor League Player of the Year, waiting in AAA. Atlanta is very set in the OF corners.
  22. Buchholz is 25, with a 1.40 WHIP, and just 6.2K/9. He's not great. Anderson is a 1B prospect coming off a full season with a 637 OPS. Niether is great. I don't see us getting a great player or prospect from Boston, they don't have any to deal.
  23. Lars Anderson lost some serious luster this year. He had as bad of season as any major prospect, with a 673 OPS. He's still young, but it certainly raises a flag. Buchholz is already 25, he's a good, but not great, value. Boston doesn't have enough to get Fielder.
  24. McGehee only has 5 more years of control left, though thats still alot. Its awesome he keeps hitting. Scouts have to be impressed with him. Some organizations don't give didly squat for minor league stats. There will a few teams that will really want him. If they don't want to give up a quality young pitcher, then he'll be back here
  25. How do you propose getting Doug Davis to sign a 1 year deal? Signing Davis to the 3 year deal he'll get risks messing up 3 seasons. I'd rather have the better pitcher on a 1 year deal.
