  1. I think they should approach Weeks about a contract extension. Getting a 2nd member of this core would really help create some surplus talent throughout the organization, as all the top prospects now are earmarked to replace somebody. This would make a mid-season trade easier.
  2. I wonder if this is the issue with him, as he started throwing a 2-seemer last year. I remember back when Dave Stewart pushed this same thing on Ben Sheets. Sheets would get alot of groundballs with it, but he also give up more HRs. Sheets was better when he went back to throwing his straight heater, and his command of it became pinpoint. I can't say for sure that this is the issue with Jeffress, but if it is, ditch it and move on.
  3. Trying reading a few of the posts. The concern was who would play in the OF if Braun or Hart were injured. Its a real concern with Braun recent injury scare. Calling me out without reading the context of the posts is being a jerk. I quoted one of the posts I was referencing to make it easy for you to understand my response, so go back and look at it. You seem overly emotional to an otherwise civil and intelligent conversation. I think you need to go back to that thread and see who actually has been posting his errors as they happen. You need some serious fact checking. Maybe then you'll realize I'm not the only one concerned. If its so easy to find 850-950 OPS OF, then why is there so few of them? Last year the league average OPS in LF was just 785. 3B was 771, so its really not the difference you keep alluding to at all. Next time you get your undies in a bundle, do some fact checking. Trying to call me out will be a losing battle. I hope we can discuss The Brewers in a more civil manner in the future.
  4. As usual, great stuff from Adam McCalvy. I really liked this quote: "When Brett was drafted, he was drafted for his bat," Melvin said. "It wasn't firm where he was going to play, and [second base] might not be his last position, either. He's athletic enough to play a couple of positions." Who knows, maybe Weeks would take an extension, and Lawrie will move over to 3B. His arm is much stronger than I expected, if he's not needed at 2B or 3B, then its RF. Its just awesome that we've nabbed a dominant player with the 16th pick. Melvins decision to heavily scout Canada may be the best he's made.
  5. Not necessarily, because at 3B his defense subtracts from his offense, at another position, it will be easier for him to be above average, and even if he isn't its a smaller impact on the total defense. In LF, he'd just have to be better than Lee, Duncan, and Soriano to be in the top half of the division defensively. Hart is under control for 2 more years, not 3. Who is the 3rd outfielder next year? We have a 3B for next year already too. We're a serious contender this year. If we need Gamel, we'll use him.
  6. Gamel has had his whole life to develop, he has played about 5 times as many games at 3B as Hall, yet he's not close defensively. He's just not the same athlete. Could you imagine Gamel trying to play SS, 2B, or CF? The Mets just did that last year with Daniel Murphy, and it was a major positive for them. Murphy's UZR/150 was above average despite never having played the position, and he hit. The difference between him and Gamel is that Gamel is a much better hitter at the minor league level.
  7. If we had extra money to throw around, we'd have thrown it around already. Edmonds is not playing because nobody wants him, he's not playing because nobody wants him at his pricetag.
  8. Your right, Gamel is just waiting for a spot to get his bat into the lineup. As to where he should play, I'd rather have a poor defender in LF, than a below average one at 3B, and below average might be too positive. I think using him in the OF also makes Duffy useful, as a defensive replacement and sometimes PR/defensive replacement. 3 ABs for Gamel and 3 innings of Duffy defensively is a pretty good LF.
  9. JoeHova's right, people don't boo Helms, they boo the Wes Helms situation. They boo the fact that Melvin gave him a ridiculous extension. they boo that Yost played him in front of superior players. The boo the trade that Yost recommended to bring him here. They boo that Yost thought he could make him a worthwhile defender. Don't take the booing personal Wes, but we had every right to boo.
  10. Thats a good read. This is the part that popped out at me: In the entire history of the June draft since 1965, NO PITCHER who was taken in the Top 10-overall picks has ever had a Hall of Fame career. Zero. None. Zilch. And none close. I hope thats not an issue for the Brewers for a long, long time. I guess we have a pitcher with HOF potential, and we passed on him with the 5th overall pick in 2004, but grabbed him up in round 2.
  11. Thats definately a strange move. There's a pitcher on Wisconson's roster that hasn't earned the right to be there, and Bowman has.
  12. Thats correct. Because of this, it makes it much easier for Washington to go ahead and make the selection. They have some leverage here. Boras runs the risk, if he doesn't let Strasburg sign, that Washington will just select him again next year. That would be hilarious. I'm guessing Strasburg signs, for about $20 million.
  13. Wooten has been awesome. The Brewers like have a veteran closers on their minor league teams, and thats a role he fits perfectly. I doubt they promote him any time soon, as I doubt they view him as a prospect. I saw him pitch a bunch of times in college, it seemed like they were on every time I turned it on. He stuff is very uninspiring. He sounds like a great young man,, and I hope he can find a way to get quality hitters out, but I doubt the Brewers are going to rock the boat for this guy. He'll move if they have an opening that needs to be filled, but they won't cut or demote someone just to move him up.
  14. Steffan Wilson did play 9 games their last year, but thats still very limited experience. I hope they keep moving him around. If he's going to make, and he could, it will be as a back-up corner guy. His K/BB really illustrates how much better he is pitching this year. This year in 6 games he's at 22/11 in 33.2 innings. Last year in 8 games at BC he was 11/14 in 18 innings, and in Huntesville in 18 games he was 45/32 in 57.2 innings. IIRC, we had an article last year that detailed he was able to throw 90 again, but his frustration was he just couldn't command the ball. Pretty normal stuff coming off TJ surgury. 26 is old for the FSL, so he'll need to become dominant quickly, and earn a promotion.
  15. We could always have him work they for a week before interleague play to prepare him for this. A little cross-training might be good for his 3B defense, to get a chance to watch another 3B play from accross the diamond might give him a little different perspective. Remember back in the day when Cirillo was in his prime? He had a kneck injury and couldn't play 3B for awhile because he couldn't turn his head. With no practice, he moved to 1B where he was instantly sensational. I'm not asking Gamel to be sensational at 1B, just better than the limbless stump that plays there now.
  16. Gamel with HR number 8 tonight. That puts him on pace for 39 for a minor league season. A total like that would put to bed the fears a few had that he didn't have huge power. I can't wait to see Mat DH in inter-league play (since the team probably won't follow my recommendation and have him play 1B and have Fielder DH), he will give us the advatage over most AL teams at that position!
  17. Its a pretty good chance Dominguez ends up in RF, but thats OK because he can run too. I'm still interested in this freak. His raw power is something I want a closer look at. He could be a righty swinging Russel Branyan. Interesting to see that Conar Gillespie rated very highly defensively, as his defense was a major question among us before last years draft, because he had a ton of errors. The Brewers showed alot of interest in him, but ultimately took Jake Odorizzi ahead of him. Tommy Mendona (the inspiration to the story Battlekow linked to) is someone I mentioned in that "What bat would you like to draft" thread, and he might fit us somewhere in the 2-3 round range. We've never really had a chance to draft a slugger who also happened to be a great defender. The question with Mendona is whether he'll make enough contact/hit for enough average.
  18. Yeah, thats amazingly scary. I really hope at the deadline after the Brewers aquire a frontline stud, we can find a sucker to take Suppan like San Fran did a few years ago when they dealt Matt Morris to Pittsburg with a year left on his deal.
  19. While Nelson hasn't hit so far, I don't think has done something to show he'll never hit. He might reel off 5 hits in a row. He hasn't been overmatched, he just hasn't gotten hits. His end of season numbers will likely be poor, but it wouldn't suprise me at all if he put up a 750 OPS from this point forward. We're not going to find a bench bat better than that. Jim Edmonds would be a great 4th OF, but the lack of available playing would make his Value Wins minute, and his dollars per production would be very poor. It would be a waste of a few million dollars.
  20. Weeks and Braun didn't play A ball for more than a couple months, and Lawrie is just as good of hitter as they were then. His pre-draft experience puts him on a different path than most players. His glove will get the same work at any level, but it could actually cause him to develop bad habits at the plate if hitting gets too easy for him.
  21. I agree with most of that, but Farris will go to AA next year if he earns it, as Lawrie could be in AAA. He will likely play in the AFL this year after spending half the season in AA. A real question with Lawrie is, should he be cross-trained at 3B? Weeks will still be in Milwaukee in 2011, but we'd have a need at 3B that year. 2B and 3B are fairly easy positions to bounce between.
  22. Dude, your way to smart to make a statement like this. Green OPS'd 922 in A ball as a 20 year old. Rottino played at the same level as a 24 year old, yet OPS'd just 834. Green won't be 24 untill the 2011 season. These players don't compare.
  23. Jeffress is 21 years old playing in AA, and he's K'ing well over 1 per inning. He'll be fine, it could click for him at any time. I understand being frustrated, but theres no reason to draw premature conclusions. At this age, Justin Verlander was still an extremely wild college pitcher. I guess you've lost track of him, but it suddenly started to click for him mid-season last year, and he's been very, very good since then. Brett Lawrie is a hitting machine. His OPS is up to 992 with tonight's performance. He was facing Eric Hosmer tonight, who was described as the best HS hitter in last years draft, where was drafted 3rd overall. His OPS was 675 before going 0-4 tonight.
  24. The SP Nashville faced tonight will start for the Cubs on friday against the Brewers as a replacement for Carlos Zambano. I'll predict the Brewers have better results. The organization won't have to go far to find a scouting report on him.
  25. I'd prefer Gamel in LF, because I think you could get some impact out of Duffy as a defensive replacement, and sometimes even a PR and then defensive replacement. Duffy doesn't have any other role to save him for. Gamel getting 3 ABs combined with 3 innings of Duffy playing defense is a real good LF. I know we could do the same by having Hall switch from LF to 3B in the middle of games, but that might really get Hall messed up. Its all a moot point for now, but that could change again tomorrow.
