  1. Gamel has not just Randolph but also Ken Macha working with him on his defense. They've already identified a flaw, he comes too upright after fielding the ball, which gives him poor balance on his throws. Both of these men are terrific teaching fundamentals. I'm sure Money is good too, but a minor league manager has a ton of other responsibilities, so he spread a little thin.
  2. This chirade the Brewers are playing by pretending that Casey MaGehee is better than Adam Heether has to end. Heether has always been better and continues to improve. Heether is a late blooming MLB caliber middle infielder in the mold of Mike Aviles and Jeff Keppinger. The Brewers have a need, MaGehee isn't filling it, move on to a better option.
  3. Rivera didn't enter the game until Todd Coffey came in, it was a double switch so Coffey could pitch the next inning. With the way our guys have hit as pinch-hitters, or the way all PH's hit, I don't know if we gain much by pinch-hitting for Kendall.
  4. I agree, that might even be conservative. However, I think we'll have a number of hitters put up better numbers than that this year. This is a very deep team.
  5. Thats pretty good news on all 3. Its good to hear Salome's absense isn't ongoing back problems. Its relieving that Periard doesn't need shoulder surgery. As I said earlier in this thread, sometimes cortisone shots do work. Also, I'm hoping Josh Romanski is one of those guys, like Amaury Rivas, that comes back from TJ surgery with a few ticks more velocity. He would then become a serious prospect when combined with his athletism, command, and offspeed arsenal.
  6. He's starting for the 5th time in 6 days, and PH in between, I think to say he's rotting is being a little dramatic. Shouldn't we wait until a longterm injury actually happens to trade? Hardy might not get injured again all year. The Brewers could also replace Casey MaGehee with Adam Heether, who is dominating in AAA, and has always been better than MaGehee. He's playing well, but didn't last year, so its hard to tell how good he is. If he is good, what motivation does Cleveland have to deal him? Like you said, he's not expensive. Weeks is injured, not dead. Brett Lawrie is a terrific prospect. Hernan Iribarren is having a good year at AAA. Alcides Escobar is showing steady progress with the bat. We're strong at 2B.
  7. Shouldn't the Brewers wait to see what they have in Gamel before trading for help? Is a Counsel/Hall platoon at 2B suddenly worse than it was at 3B a few weeks ago? I don't think anyone would disagree with my assertation that Gamel is as good, if not better, than Weeks as a hitter. I still continue to think the whole leadoff thing is overrated. After the 1st inning, the guy is just a ballplayer like everyone else.
  8. I'm not sure why we'd trade Parra for a pitcher who's road ERA might be similar to what Parra puts up overall. If we aquire a pitcher, I'd want an Ace type, then I'll consider trading Parra, but replacing Looper or Suppan would make more sense.
  9. The Brewers have always strictly adhered to the slot system. They were 1 of just 4 teams to not sign a player for 250 K over slot last year. Considering how well the Brewers draft, you have to be impressed with their efficiency. The key is avoiding Boras clients (unless they're college seniors), but that keeps getting harder to do. Boras will represent about 1/3 of the 1st round this year.
  10. Since when did TJ surgury come with a 16 month recovery time? Brewers prospects Mike Jones and Amaury Rivas had TJ surgery in late July of 2007, and both made it back for opening day 2008, and Rivas had a breakout season. Riske's likely return would be next June, and earlier is a possibility.
  11. Who are all the Boras clients in this draft? I know of Strasburg, Grant Green, Andrew Oliver, Kentrail Davis, Dustin Ackley, Aaron Crow, Donovan Tate, Matt Purke, Jacob Turner, Levon Washington, James Paxton. Who am I missing?
  12. This sucks, but at least its an injury at a position where we're strong. The Brewers are 2nd in the NL in bullpen ERA, just like last year. The team also has a number of relievers pitching very well at AAA. Its odd that he might need TJ surgury when the tendon is just loose, not torn. Very rare injury.
  13. Taylor Green has almost the exact same stance as Lawrie, he's just not as open. He has the same exaggerated crouch.
  14. I just realized that Mat Gamel is the Brewers 1st 4th round pick (2005) to make it to the show since Billy Bates, who was drafted in 1985. The diminutive 2B appeared in 29 games, with a .335 career OPS. I'd say Mat will have a much more inspiring career.
  15. Turner is a Boras client, and is asking for $7 million. He could fall like a stone with that asking price, and the Brewers will pass on him too. Lets say he agrees to $5 million, thats $3.7 million over slot. There will be a very good player available for slot at #26, the Brewers will save that money to spend on a trade aquisition for the stretch drive. The Brewers could actually use more power bats in the system, The Brewers already have a nice collection of power arms from rookie ball through A+. They'll stick with BPA. With 5 of the 1st 74, they could get a collection of both , power bats and power arms. If the Brewers pick 3 pitchers before round 3, it will be only the 3rd time in franchise history the've done that. The other times were last year , (with 4), 1993 (Jeff D'amico and Kelly Wusnsch were major leaguers), and 1987. None of the pitchers from 87 made the majors..
  16. Mark Attanosio mentioned how the Brewers being a strong baseball market demographically was a major reason he bought the team. This isn't the 2nd best market in baseball, but it is about 10th. This isn't really a tribute of how we are as Brewers fans, its a tribute to how we are as professionals.
  17. I'm very happy Macha didn't go nuts just because his team meet a hot club for 1 series. That would seem like a panic move Ned Yost would make. The players control their own destinies.
  18. Baker had a 3.45 ERA last year, pretty impressive in the AL. He's significantly better than Dave Bush. The rookie they sent at us was Anthony Swarzak. He is a 23 year old quality prospect and former 2nd round pick. He has good stuff and had some very good minor league seasons. I don't know why you'd consider him a career minor leaguer.
  19. Iribarren has never played there in a minor league game, but he did get one start there in spring training this year. Cool to see Escobar working that OPS north.
  20. Some awesome pitching on the farm today. Butler with 5 more shutout innings. Thats 15 straight innings since he's given up a run. He just doesn't give up extra base hits, and his K totals are increasing.
  21. Anundsen is a righty , not a lefty like Moyer. As the chart Battlekow posted, lefties can get by with far less velocity than righties. Moyer is the reason I have hope for Chris Cody. I'm content to see what he turns into too, I'm not in any way saying he should be released, but he's 15th on the P50. Thats awfully high in a good system when he's battling such long odds. Your chart shows there isn't any RHP breaking into the league with 85 MPH velocity. The only guy throwing 85 is Livan Hernandez, and he got pounded last year, and I'll guess that his numbers will go south this year too. To predict Anundsen is likely to accomplish something in way no one else is able to do to me is over-reaching.
  22. All of Minnesta's hitters were slumping together , now their all hot together. Nobody is going to get them out right now. Parra didn't throw that bad, they hit good pitches. It would have been better to play them a week ago, but no big deal, our record is still awesome.
  23. I find it contradictery that you don't want a limited upside guy, but you like Mier and Stassi. I doubt the Brewers would have an interest in either because of that lack of upside. I do, however agree with your desire for Mitchel. I think the emergence of Tim Wheeler increases the chances of Mitchell being available to us. Its a really deep 1st round, IMO.
  24. Did he break 86 with his fastball? I'm suprised so many are excited about a guy who doesn't have big league velocity. He doesn't even have Ben Hendickson velocity. Velocity isn't everything, but every MLB RHSP throws high 80s.
  25. Great to see Jones get off to a great start in AA, especially pitching in front of the home crowd. They were pretty merciless to him last season, but I'm sure they'll cheer him now. The batter Jones struck out to get out of a jam in the 5th, Quiroz, has spent parts of the past 5 seasons in the majors.
