  1. Now those are the same scouts that don't think Gamel is a 3B right? The scouts aren't high on Greens overall tools, but they do say he has very good batspeed. His lack of tools limit his versatility defensively, but his offensive ceiling is good.
  2. You've seen Gamel play more than most, would you DH him in interleague play, or would you consider playing him at 1B, and DH Fielder? I would think you could give Gamel a little time there in AAA to prepare for this. A little cross-training might give him a little different perspective and actually help him defensively.
  3. MaGehee played LF in college, Hall never played it in his life. I just can't figure out why this organization continues to kick around Bill Hall. We used to joke about whether or not Hall could pitch. We should see that any day now, he'll probably be asked to catch at the same time.
  4. Why do people kick around Taylor Green? His minor league numbers rival Gamel's. While he doesn't have alot of defensive upside, he is a better defender right now than Gamel. The Brewers sent him to the AFL last year, they obviously like him alot. He should be very MLB ready by 2011.
  5. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, I'd like to go back the thread topic, and re-ask this: Heres my major issue with the bench. The Brewers face a LHSP tonight. If Braun isn't available, who starts in LF? Nelson and Duffy can't even hit RHP, and one of them is going to start in LF versus a LHP? I think the Brewers really errored in spring training not getting MaGehee reps in the OF. He hasn't played the position as a pro, but he did play the OF in college.
  6. Hart is a FA after 2011, Hall 2010, so a longterm need exists at both positions. I would sure hope Gamel would be playing the OF before the Brewers open a spot for him in the big league line-up. Calling him up to the Bigs and switching him to the OF at the same would be terrible planning.
  7. What defensive metric are you using to judge Fielder's ability to receive throws?
  8. This thread just highlights the rediculousness of Mat Gamel not having played the OF yet. After 4 years of HS baseball, 2 seasons of JuCo ball, and 4 seasons of pro ball, they think somehow a fifth pro season is going to be a sudden cure all? Gamel's bat is ROTY worthy, and we have a quality 3B signed through next season. Some positional crosstraining can't hurt anymore than everything else they've done with him defensively that hasn't worked.
  9. I'm thje biggest proponet here for moving Gamel to a new position, but Gamel is a better 3B right now than Fielder is a 1B. Fielder is awful at 1B, and the Brewers could have used keeping him in the minors as motivation to at least learn the proper fundamentals of stretching for throws. I do agree Gamel should learn a different position, and he could get plenty of ABs as a backup at LF/RF/1B/PH. Gamel is even a better PH option versus LHP than MaGehee. Heres my major issue with the bench. The Brewers face a LHSP tonight. If Braun isn't available, who starts in LF? Nelson and Duffy can't even hit RHP, and one of them is going to start in LF versus a LHP? I think the Brewers really errored in spring training not getting MaGehee reps in the OF. 10. Ya, the writers from BA keep saying he has a mid 80s fastball, and everyone else says high 80s to low 90s. Is BA just taking that from their predraft report on Anundsen? A major reason the Brewers drafted Anundsen was they thought he would add velocity, I hope that has happened.
  11. JJ Hardy and Yo Gallardo are very offended by this statement. (Both were 2nd round picks)
  12. Not making a trade is mortgaging the future. If we didn't maake a playoff push, we wouldn't have had the payroll to sign Hoffman. I know its hard at the beginning of this cycle to wait for draft picks, but after we do this type a few more times, and the draft picks from our 1st prospects for rental deal get closer to the majors, more will realize we've created a never ending cycle to replenish our talent. I do appreciate that some wanted to deal for a longterm pitching solution, I wanted that at the time too. However, a pitcher who would have been a longterm solution wouldn't have been as dominant as CC, we wouldn't have made the playoffs, and we wouldn't have this years payroll, and we wouldn't have 2 extra quality draft picks next month. As for LaPorta, he's a quality power hitter, but he's a DH, and we have 1 too manyof those already. TotalZone For The Minors shows him as a terrible OF. I want a quality defensive team that can support a pitching staff.
  13. CV had a 2.12 ERA in 64 bullpen innings, with 72 Ks last season. He was the unsung hero to our playoff run. No need to send him out yet. He'll find himself soon. I hope Macha continues to use his relievers in rotation, rather than the over-rigid roles Yost used the pen in last year. Set roles leaves relievers at the mercy of team hot and cold streaks.
  14. Why wish good luck to this selfish loser? He's the guy who refused to sign a team picture the rest of his team signed for an MS fundraiser. I hope he goes 0-5 with 5 K's, an error, and catches the swine flu.
  15. I stand corrected. It now makes more sense now how Bush made it through waivers, as if he would have been claimed the Brewers simply would have revoked.
  16. If you are going to compare the 2, then you need to curve Nix's stats for his time playing in the offensive havens that he played in during his time in the Texas chain. Brad Nelson's career minor leagues stats are not a true representation of his present hitting ability. In spring of 2008, he junked the big leg lift he used his whole career for a toe tap. He instantly went from a hacker to an extremely patient hitter.
  17. While I realize Hardy won't and shouldn't be optioned, he does have 3 options remaining. Bush had to clear waivers because he was out of options.
  18. What OF would rather have for 1 game , Braun, Duffy, Hart, or Braun, Hart, Gillespie? Also, after Gamel is sent back down, he'd be replaced with Irabarren, who'd then be the backup CF. The few starts Duffy will get in CF isn't enough to keep him around, especially considering he doesn't offer any offense as the back-up CF. Gillespie has been a far superior minor league hitter than MaGahee, making him a better fit for the PH role versus LHP. I'd also prefer him as a hitter to Duffy versus RHP.
  19. True if you look at only offense in a vacuum. However, defense maters. Thats why I have started refering to players by their Value Wins instead of their OPS. I want to alter my original prediction that 7 position players will have at least 3.5 Value Wins, thats a miscount, I mean 6, and Fielder won't be one of them. Hall and Weeks are now more valuable than Prince.
  20. I see him making defensive misplays almost daily. As for huge offensive numbers, I think he will be a little better than last year, but thats still not huge. His Win Value isn't something I made up, if you think that is inaccurate, thats more a matter for the folks at Fangraphs. I think his value is actually overrated in Win Values, because theres no adjustment factor in UZR for Fielders complete inability to receive throws, but I'll just stick to their stat for now.
  21. At 1st I thought the idea of sending Hardy to AAA for a few weeks was outrageous, but actually, it is a terrific idea, as it would give us control of Hardy for another season. It would make up for the colossal blunder Melvin made to open the 2005 season. It will never happen, but it would be awesome.
  22. I'm not saying we don't have some very talented prospects, I'm asking why they could easily replace someone else, but not a low Value win player like Fielder? Its very possible the Brewers will have 7 position players with at least 3.5 Value Wins this year, including Hall and Weeks, and that group likely wouldn't include Fielder.
  23. I agree Gamel should be brought up for interleague play. However, should he DH? How long would it really take him to become a better defensive 1B than Fielder? Let him play 1B the week prior to his call-up, and if he takes to it quickly like I think he could, DH Fielder. Gamel could probably scoop throws better than Fielder in his sleep. He also offers a little bigger target. I know some will say "but that will take development time away from him playing 3B", but he's been playing 3B forever, what difference is 1 more week gonna make? Send down Magehee and Duffy, recall Gamel and Gillespie. After interleague play is over, replace Gamel with Irabarren.
  24. Its very cool seeing Braddock back. His velocity was up last year, but his command was off. Poor command is normal with a bum elbow. Now that its fixed, he could really move this year. His upside is huge.
  25. Zack is Back! Its a Cinderella story. He starts off with a scoreless inning with 2Ks.
