  1. Can't bring up Broxton or Phillips due to sending them down in the last 10 days. I think it is important to note how sporadic and how limitted the ABs will be. I will take my chances with the guy with MLB experience. Kyle Wren likely to be a dumpster fire in the few random ABs he will get before Phillips(my educated guess) gets called up or Keon Broxton. Dumpster fire? That pretty well sums up Nieuwenhuis' entire 2017 season, majors and minors. I just don't get the lack of respect for any player in the system not acquired by the boy genius. Brewers gave away Cooper. Wren has fanned 51 times in 405 minor league PA. Nieuwenhuis has fanned 54 times in less than half that many PA at AAA. Only justifiable reason is the Brewers are close to acquiring a better quality experienced LH hitting CF and need a fill in for a couple days. Then after that guy is acquired they can simply DFA Nieuwnhuis again. Why was Phillips sent down to begin with anyway? He could have split time with Brinson. Have to wonder if Villar's days with Brewers are just about up. Bringing up an extra OF could mean the intent is to platoon Perez and Sogard at 2B.
  2. I've advocated for making the big move for a quality arm but the time to make a big deal for this year was coming out of the All Star break. Every day that went by reduced any impact. Nobody can have enough impact in 2 months to make the price worthwhile. The tipping point was the start of this week heading into series with the Nats and Cubs. Now the moves to focus on are around the edges with rentals and using the talent in the system. Give Hader the darn ball. Hope Brinson is the real deal now, not 2 years from now. He just might be. Get Anderson back healthy and hope he's the same guy he was went he went down. Hope Thames has another hot streak. Keep Braun healthy. All is not lost. Even if the Cubs take off, the wild card is still well within reach. Just win your share against them and beat up on the Reds, Cardinals and Bucs.
  3. Everyone's overlooking an obvious candidate for the bullpen: Bubba Derby. Yes, he's been mostly a starter in the minors, but that's true of most major league relievers and he mostly relieved in Biloxi before being promoted and he's behind the top names mentioned as future starters.
  4. You'd option a guy who since he arrived is 26-13 in 55 starts with a WHIP of 1.316 and a 4.1 WAR in less than 2 full seasons? Heck I think he's the most reliable starter they have. Note I said reliable, not necessarily the best and maybe not the most talented, but certainly the guy with the most savvy, guts, and makeup between the ears. Since he first arrived and shut out the Cubs in Wrigley late in 2015 for 6 innings, Davies has repeatedly shown that he's cool as a cucumber under pressure and that's a talent in itself.
  5. He's done well this entire month. He had a 1.96 ERA before this start. Went 7 scoreless. I knew he'd be a rotation asset, maybe even top of rotation-ish. Suter has definitely nailed down the Anderson spot in the rotation, which could have turned into a black hole during this DL stint. Don't know if Suter is top of rotation quality, but I'd be plenty happy if he becomes this generation's Jamie Moyer. How about a poor man's Mark Buehrle?
  6. MLB trade rumors says Span is available. If Granderson might be a target, why not go after Span who's better at this stage.
  7. Yeah, he's one available vet bat out there that can play CF and if Brinson's up for good which I think he is, it would be nice to ease him in by having a vet LH bat rather than Phillips in a soft platoon to face tough RHP. He won't cost much of anything either other than salary. If Phillips is traded, I'd rather have Denard Span than Granderson though if the Giants made him available. Broxton for Span perhaps?
  8. That's not a bad package, but not close to what the Cubs gave up. I'm glad we didn't try to match the Cubs' offer. They have a lot of young talent at the MLB level and an unlimited check book, so they can make that deal. The Brewers couldn't afford to pay that much in talent, so kudos to Stearns/Attanasio for understanding that would have been a big overpay for them. Ortiz is two levels above Cease, and just a few months older. I believe the Brewers had a decided edge there. The problem is the Jimenez is younger and outperforming Ray in the same league and appears to be the best prospect in the deal and that's what it came down to I'm sure. If the Sox had been in love with Ray, it would've worked. They weren't.
  9. Yeah they updated it. Apparently it's the Royals.
  10. Uh oh. Mlbtraderumors speculating Jays are close to dealing Liriano. No mention of to whom but that would be so Brewers. He did beat. the A's on Monday and would be available Saturday.
  11. I wonder if Augustine will bring up his start from August 5, 1979 when he allowed 6 runs in 2 innings of a 19-5 loss in the 2nd game of a doubleheader vs. the Red Sox, a doubleheader at County Stadium where the Brewers were swept by the combined score of 26-7. I was there. Talk about a contrast to the prior week when the Brewers were finishing off a sweep of the Yankees.
  12. This isn't the old days. That kind of stuff was stupid. Ah but the brawls between the old Braves and Dodgers were epic and the hitters weren't as comfortable either.
  13. Understatement of the century by Lepay, "unfortunately this is a step backward for Peralta".
  14. In the old days, guys would get knocked down in games like this, like the game after Joe Adcock hit 4 HR and a double in Brooklyn, then was beaned his first time up the next game.
  15. It's actually entertaining in a perverse type of way. I can just imagine the Skysox pitching staff gathered together watching this one on MLB tv and taking bets on which guys are called up after the game.
  16. Shaw bringing back memories of my first childhood hero, Eddie Mathews.
  17. Pretty good isn't shutdown. The really good pens have 3-4 shutdown guys.
  18. He doesn't need you to make excuses for him. This was supposed to be another wasted season, that's how the team was built. Now we're surprised it's actually turning out that way. Oh, and the best options at SP ARE actually in the rotation. Hader, Burnes, Woodruff, Wilkerson and I am probably missing some, all should have been used as a starting pitcher before Blazek. Stearns didn't hit on really any bullpen arms. Did he go out and sign top end guys? No. But he whiffed on a closer and he's whiffed on just about any other arm he's brought in. Not only is he above true but as a team that kept winning games and building a lead, he sat on his hands even though it was very easy to see the true colors of this bullpen. He could have been proactive rather than reactive. He's failed this season. Hopefully he learns from it and the same with Counsell. Worse than whiffing completely, much of the guys he has in the pen are teasers. They sting together a few decent outings and the manager thinks they are actually good. Hughes, Torres, Barnes and Drake fit that mold.
  19. It's hard for a guy already in the game to go out there and pitch because he can't warm up. Otherwise I'm sure Perez would volunteer. I'll go with Pina pitching and Perez catching. This game could end something like 24-2.
  20. Guessing Blazek had his first and last major league start on the same day.
  21. More likely they were monitoring Jhoulys Chacin who won his 10th game of the year last night for the Pads.
