  1. A totally out of the blue move would be renting Darvish as Stearns has basically said he's looking for guys who will be around past this year. Cueto would be a very interesting move as well.
  2. Antone Williamson (#4 overall pick in 94) might be number 1 bust for Brewers. Dave Krynzel was another. Then there was Mike Jones a year later. Gold was for sure. Lots more of them.
  3. Cooper was a 4 year college player who didn't start his pro career until age 22. He was a 6th round pick which is high for 4 year college players so he was pretty well regarded and he's advanced every year. Some big guys take a while to learn how to turn line drives into HR. Based on the evidence this year, I think Cooper has learned. For a big guy, he doesn't strike out much at all either so I'd say he's a pretty accomplished hitter.
  4. Pass on Stroman, cost high in terms of prospects we would have to give up and serious durability concerns based on his frame. Frame has nothing to do with durability. If Stroman is available, I'd make a significant offer to get him as I think he's at least on par with Quintana. Tom Gordon had a similar frame and how long was his career?
  5. Completely agree. If Cooper gets a true shot, he might be the real deal. Nothing wrong with Wang either. Yea, it's too bad in a way, but there's just no room for Cooper. They would have needed to add him to the 40 next year. Keep in mind part of the plan moving forward at some point could be Braun or Santana moving to 1B either full time or part time. So as long as they had to move him, I'm just glad it's for a pitcher- relief pitcher or not. Not sure this has anything to do with Wang, plenty of room for more than one LHP. I would have kept Cooper and moved Aguilar this winter. Aguilar probably gets more of a return. I really love Aguilar's bat too, but Cooper has an edge athletically and could be used in the OF and has option years that come in handy. Boston felt like they had to move Shaw too and they got burned with a reliever in return.
  6. This guy is a parody account, not a reliable source at all for anything other than humor I wouldn't go as far as saying Brewers are actively shopping Hader, but I bet his name comes up every time Stearns asks about a quality controllable starter.
  7. Completely agree. If Cooper gets a true shot, he might be the real deal. Nothing wrong with Wang either.
  8. Hate giving up an everyday player for a bullpen arm even if the everyday player was blocked. At best Webb's just a minor bullpen piece. Who knows what Cooper could end up being if given a real shot?
  9. The Cubs gave up 4 guys, none of whom would help them before 2020. Quintana solidifies their rotation for that same time period. No brainer for the Cubs. The comparable Brewer offer would be Ray, Freddie Peralta, Luis Aviles and Neuhaus. I'd have done that one in a heartbeat, unfortunately Ray hasn't shown as much as Jimenez and that's the difference.
  10. Besides the prospects, I would think Aguilar would be very attractive to AL teams as he's proven to an extent vs. MLB pitching, and he's controllable through 2022. White Sox for instance, have an opening at DH. They've been using Matt Davidson at DH only until Frazier is traded or leaves via FA. If he's added to the package offered for Quintana, they might be able to get Sox to take something less than two of the top 5-6 Brewer prospects.
  11. Probably Aguilar, because he is a RH hitter and because of Garrett Cooper. Although I'm a little concerned about Coopers Home/Road split in AAA (.442/.300) Aguilar's success at the major league level and his control make him a better trade candidate than Cooper. Yes Cooper has raked in Colorado Springs, but it's not like he's been a bum away from there with a more than respectable road .859 OPS. As Billy Ripkin said during the AAA All Star game last night "Colorado Springs is a great place to hit, but you still have to do it, and he's doing it better than anyone else on their roster", a roster that includes some very, very highly rated prospects I might add. He also commented on how difficult it is for a big guy like Cooper to keep from getting real long with his swing. Yet his K rate is very, very low for a guy slugging .652. At this point, I think Cooper could replace Aguilar and they wouldn't miss a beat. Cooper also has some OF experience, though most of that was last year. I still think athletically he could play OF too.
  12. Cubs were reportedly asking Detroit about Michael Fulmer and were willing to part with Schwarber. Now Tigers are said to be searching for their CF of the future and rejected the Cubs. If Fulmer were available, the asking price would be enormous, but Brewers have the CF in Brinson that might interest the Tigers but don't think him alone gets it done. Question is what else would they want? Davies? Woodruff?
  13. Gindl is still at it with an .809 OPS in 71 games this year for the Lancaster Barnstormers in the Atlantic League. His former teammate in the Brewer system Sean Halton is also playing with Lancaster with a current OPS of .831 also in 71 games. I thought Gindl had a chance to develop into a Matt Stairs type player but he's never quite had the power of Stairs even though their swings looked a lot alike.
  14. Brewers acquire Jhoulys Chacin and Brad Hand from Padres in exchange for Jorge Lopez, Jett Bandy and Wei-Chung Wang.
  15. Can Suter keep this up? Channeling my inner Clancy, I sure hope he has shown CC/DS that he deserves a chance. He has had success at every level of the minors, has a 3.12 ERA, with 1.29 WHIP in 49 innings of mixed service in the majors. It seems to me that Suter keeps Anderson's slot until he comes back or proves he can't handle MLB. Woodruff has been out long enough that he would have to make multiple starts down in the minors to show me has it back, and has the stamina. At whatever point one of Woodruff / Anderson is back, then Guerra gets pushed out if he is still 2017 Guerra. If Suter is doing well, then I have to think that Woodruff remains in the minors as the main guy to bring up if a starter goes down. Unless you are willing to tempt fate and replacing Davies, he of the lucky horseshoe of offensive support. I think Davies is firmly established, not just on his 10 wins, but on his work in 2015 and 2016. Offensive support aside, he's been a winner ever since he's been a Brewer. Suter is the wild card. If he keeps pitching like Mark Buehrle then they could really have something. His fast pace keeps hitters off balance. I agree that Woodruff's 2017 opportunity came and he missed it at least for now. Time for him to crank it up in AAA and be ready if other's falter.
  16. Guerra's issues have to do with his velocity being down and as a result he's become more of a nibbler with his fastball and getting behind consistently. That doesn't allow him to use his out pitch. It was up a bit this past start in the 92-93 range so there's some hope it will get back to 94-95 where he had success last year. In their position Brewers can't/won't give him a long leash. Wang's been very good lately with 12 K's in his last 5 appearances over 6 1/3 innings. If anyone in the pen starts to falter, he's definitely an option.
  17. Personally, I think Hader is being underutilized. I'd send him back down and stretch him out for 3 starts and let Wang take his bullpen spot for the time being. Hader could be the difference maker but not pitching 2-3 innings per week. I can see the argument that if it's not broken, don't fix it. But there's a lot of ifs. Can Suter keep this up? Will Guerra get his form back? Garza? How long will it take Anderson not just to get back but get back to the level he was at.
  18. The teams to worry about are the Cardinals and Pirates both of whom have better starting pitching than the Cubs do.
  19. Chacin now has 6 quality starts in his last 7 games. The 7th was 5 innings against the Dodgers where he allowed 0 runs.
  20. Barry Cort was a 4th round pick out of high school in 1974 who won 14 games in AA at age 20. He won 36 games in the minors before turning 21. Sadly he blew out his arm about a month after a promising start to his Brewer career at age 21 in 1977 and never made it back. Had he stayed healthy, no telling what kind of career he would have had. He might have put the Brewers over the top in both 78 and 79 too.
  21. So does Wang finally get the call to take a roster spot for a few days and fill out the 40 man? Or do they add an extra bat and reward Garrett Cooper?
  22. Clancy, have to hand it to you. Suter is looking like the second coming of Mark Beuhrle. If he keeps that up, he'll have a spot. But they'll still trade for Quintana, and say thanks to Garza as he's dispatched.
  23. 3 plus pitches including according to BA pre 2016 draft scouting report: "low to mid 90's fastball, elite breaking ball, and a changeup that has been a weapon" What more stuff would he need??? He's showed great command since turning pro, an ability to keep the ball on the ground, and a puny BAA of .181.
  24. You are underrating Quintana. Quintana is a career 21.4 WAR pitcher in 6 seasons. deGrom is a career 13.9 WAR pitcher in 4 seasons. Right now Nelson is a legit #1, Quintana is #1 on half the teams in baseball and Anderson this year is a solid #2.
