  1. In agreement that Mets farm system doesn't have the bullets necessary but Wheeler/d'Arnaud as key pieces is a very nice return if you believe Wheeler returns to his pre TJ form. A rotation of Nelson, a healthy Wheeler and Hader at the top in 2017 would hasten the rebuild considerably and d'Arnaud is a starting caliber catcher, easing the effect of losing Lucroy. All catchers with French surnames can play, can't they?
  2. Arcia homered off Sergio Romo? A 425 footer no less? Now that's impressive!
  3. "Lefties take longer to develop"?? Nonsense. Bumgarner debuted at 19. Kershaw at 20. Sabathia at 20. Chris Sale at 21. All had less minor league experience than Hader and none has had any significant injuries other than Sabathia much later in his career. "Too slight"??? Sale is listed at 6'6" 180. Obviously, the perception at the time he was drafted was that Hader wasn't in their class and that's going to result in slower progress. But scouts make mistakes and if they did a 2012 re-draft today, Hader would be right up there.
  4. On a team that isn't expected to contend for a couple years, every player is available for a price. Since they can afford to wait out any growing pains, his value to the Brewers should be based on his potential rather than his current production and is likely higher than other teams value him, but you definitely listen to offers if teams are interested. If we were contending for a playoff spot and Nelson was our best pitcher, then it'd be silly to trade him, but that's not the situation this year and likely won't be for at least a couple more seasons. In two years, they can have Nelson and Hader as 1-2 in their rotation in either order. That's assuming of course Hader's not making his 75th or so start in AA. That alone can make their rotation worthy of wild card contenders unless they purposely are trying not to be.
  5. The jury's out on Stearns. He's hit on some (Villar, Carter, Guerra) but jury's out on most of his moves and will be for some time. The return for Segura wasn't bad but it's becoming apparent he sold low on him and unless Diaz becomes a player down the road, it's likely the best player moved in that deal is now playing for Arizona and that's not even mentioning Wagner who might turn out to be serviceable. His rule 5 selections at this point look ill-advised as do his cornering the market on overrated former Red Sox 3B (though there was truly nothing to lose on those). His best deal was trading a prospect (Sneed) for Villar, so that doesn't really qualify as a rebuild move but the return so far is promising. Neither does the signing of Carter though that could end up being turned into a nice move for the future. Melvin had a terrific final year as GM from picking 24 year old Hernan Perez off the scrap heap (who Stearns foolishly risked losing to a waiver claim after last year), making the deal with Houston and getting Davies for expiring contract in Parra.
  6. Madison Bumgarner made his major league debut at 19, and was in the big leagues to stay midway through his 20 year old season, one in which he logged 193 innings. the previous season he logged 141 innings at age 19. He hasn't missed a single start since. Chris Sale made his major league debut at 21, was used out of the pen for a year, then save for a couple starts here and there, has been in the Sox rotation since. Sale had all of 10 minor league innings before making it to big leagues to stay. Kershaw debuted in the majors two months after his 20th birthday, and has been there ever since, and never missed a start. The difference between those guys and Hader as minor leaguers? Performance-wise, zip, zilch, nothing. Hader's been every bit as dominating as those guys were. No, the difference is that those guys were all first round picks, and Hader was picked in round 19. But if they could go back and re-draft the 2012 draft, is there any doubt Hader is a top 10 or 15? Brewers are babying him, plain and simple. That's not the way to handle talents like his.
  7. I don't think there is any chance that Collins can stick at catcher, but his bat should play almost anywhere. He isn't my top choice at #5, but if he can transition to 1B, he will move quickly. The last big bat the Brewers selected as the 5th over pick in the draft from the U turned out pretty well. I don't see a cornerstone type 1B in the Brewer system currently either and he's probably advanced enough to be in the core that includes Arcia, Phillips and Clark. I'd be fine with Ray too, but Collins intrigues me.
  8. Crazy waste of resources. So another beautiful modern park will be demolished? Can't be too surprised though. NBA and NFL venues have become obsolete virtually overnight. Who would have thought 20 years ago, the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis wouldn't be adequate and result in the team moving?
  9. Either Jungmann is hurt or as was suggested the new pitching coach messed him up. Maybe it's both. He's not the same guy that looked after his first 10-12 starts that he might pick up some ROY votes. He's not of the age that they can be real patient either. He's wasting a 40 man spot.
  10. Santana, whether due to injury or not, has not been good offensively or defensively since the first 3 weeks of the season. I'm guessing Braun's going on the DL but I was about a week away from suggesting Santana be optioned and Broxton brought back. Hopefully Broxton found his stroke in AAA and it carries over. His defense will help. That Braun wasn't used in the extra inning game suggests his back issues are more serious. I'm the lone wolf as usual I know, but I still wish they had Davis. Many on here thought his trade value had peaked and that Santana was ready when they dealt Davis. I think that was wrong on both points. Davis is continuing to establish himself as a premier power bat, leading the AL in AB/HR and tied for lead with 12. Imagine the mine field an opposing pitcher would be facing with Braun, Lucroy, Carter and Davis in the middle of the lineup.
  11. Khris Davis has 36 home runs in his last 454 plate appearances. He is one of the premier power bats in all of baseball. He is in his prime and cheap. Brewers sold too low. Way too low and Santana is a replacement level or worse corner OF.
  12. I can't believe this is being seriously discussed. This is a franchise that has spent ridiculous amounts on mediocre pitchers past their prime and Nelson comes along and shows signs of being the best starter they've produced since at least Gallardo and possibly Sheets and people want him dealt? Premier pitching is too hard to come by for small markets. No return would be enough.
  13. Could have been a sweep had Sedar not held Carter at 3rd in the 12th last night, but I'll take 2 of the 3 from the almighty (in their minds) Cubs!
  14. Even though they are about the same age, Cervelli doesn't have the track record or offensive numbers that Luc has put up. Really only one year (last year) as a full time player. But he seems like he gave up some cash. The MLB Trade Rumors guys had predicted a 3-year/$39M deal this off season - assuming he continued to produce all year. Still a nice deal for a guy who was considered a back up two years ago. Lucroy would be a bargain if he signed a 4 year $60 million extension that covered his age 31/32 to 34/35 years. Just wish both sides were interested. Heck Melvin signed Damian Miller to a 3 year deal when he was 35.
  15. The two had nothing to do with each other imo. Maybe, maybe not, but he's not the first guy to suffer that fate. Dale Sveum, Rick Renteria, Brad Mills, Ryne Sandberg and Bo Porter were all doomed to the same fate. They all took jobs understanding they weren't trying to contend and they all accomplished that. Joe Maddon wasn't around when the Cubs stunk.
  16. The Astros trade of Lyles for Dexter Fowler was hardly a rebuilding move. They turned around and dealt Fowler for journeyman Valbuena, again hardly a rebuilding move. None of the arms they dealt were on the level of Nelson either.
  17. White Sox don't have a great system. Fulmer's highly touted but with so-so results so far. Their other big prospect is Tim Anderson, who plays the same position as Arcia, and isn't as good defensively. I'd need a sure thing and then some to deal Nelson who's controllable for this year and 4 additional seasons. Other somewhat intriguing guy in their system is Danny Hayes, a 1B who's a OBP freak, not unlike Walsh. He had an OBP that was 140 points higher than his .248 BA at AA last year. He's off to a great start in AAA: .312/.411/.558. But he'll be 26 in Sept, and has never hit for the power you want at 1B. He is blocked there, but I sure wouldn't deal Nelson to get him.
  18. Just saw interview with Zack Collins on MLB traderumors. What's not to like here? Power, patience, LH bat, from top program. Sure, he's projected to go lower, but so was Schwarber wasn't he? They invested a lot to get Nottingham but no reason not to have two stud catchers in the system and hope one can handle the job defensively and the other hits enough to play elsewhere.
  19. Khris Davis hit 3 bombs last night and now has 11_for the year. All I can say is Nottingham and Derby better be good because the jury is out on Santana.
  20. Cotts opted out of minor league deal with Angels. Have to think he's a better option than Capuano.
  21. With all due respect, Jungmann and Davies project as 4-5 starters. Jungmann didn't come close to dominating minor leaguers like Hader has. Hader projects as a 1, 2 or at worst a 3. Hader should be compared to Gallardo, who was in the big leagues at 21 after making all of 26 starts combined at AA and AAA. Hader has 404 minor league innings under his belt including 29 starts at AA alone. Gallardo had 380 total innings when he was in big leagues for good at 21, not counting 3 rehab starts after making it in 2008. You actually think Tyler Cravy or Hiram Burgos would save the bullpen more than Hader? Really??
  22. What Hader and more importantly his agent don't know he's the best starter in the Brewer minor league system right now? He's in his 3rd season in AA, and he's way, way above the talent level of the league. He's being artificially held back plain and simple. How long can they go and not risk damage to the ability to lock him up a few years from now? Don't think he and his agent won't remember? That's not to say he's a finished product by any means but he's darn good right now. Certainly better than some of the guys they are trotting out there at for major league prices. But finishing school should be the major leagues for talents like him, not seeing AA hitters over and over. It's far worse to hold him back and then see him struggle adjusting to major leagues while the rest of the roster is ready to compete. Not every piece that will be part of the teams that will compete will arrive together. That didn't happen in Chicago and shouldn't happen here. They can shut him down early enough to limit him to around 150 innings. He's got 18-20 starts left to reach that level. That would take him to end of August.
