  1. Gomez deserves to start in the NL with Puig and Stanton. Braun is deserving of a reserve spot. Lucroy deserves to start too, but he'll end up as a reserve. Lohse isn't a lock yet. There's lots of pitchers having great years. NL starter locks so far are Cueto, Hudson, Wainwright, Greinke and Teheran plus one of the Cubs. That's 6 for sure. How many other starters get selected? A case could be made for Will Smith too.
  2. Hammel is 6-3 with a 2.78 ERA, WHIP of 0.869, and K/BB ratio of 4.13. Hitters are batting only .187/.243/.291 off him. He's actually been better than Samardzija, 2.3 WAR to 1.9. Samardzija gets the attention because of lack of wins oddly enough but Hammel is their All Star as the Brewers can attest.
  3. Very, very good point. Amazing how many big innings they've had since they stopped the playing for one run at a time.
  4. Even when he's a little off, he usually keeps the team in the game. When he's on it's a thing of beauty. He's convinced me.
  5. Melvin has managed to turnover talent from within with guys like Davis and Gennett recently and Lucroy several years back, and through shrewd deals that brought Segura and Gomez. He's also has arms poised to slide into rotation spots as they open up. All this with one of the lowest rated farm systems. No, he hasn't built a juggernaut but he's put together a roster that in years when injuries don't derail them, can often compete for the postseason and it's a roster that only needs attention in one or two spots a year.
  6. Wang's already well behind most prospects his age in development time. If he makes it through this season with the Brewers, it's likely he'll start next year no higher than Brevard as a 23 year old. It might even be he's in Appleton next year. That's part of the reason I'm not on board with this. It's a lot of shenanigans for one prospect for whom success if it comes at all is so far off. He may well be 26 or 27 before he's ready to pitch in the major leagues.
  7. Do you want to pay $5-6 million, which he figures to get in final arby year, for a serviceable back end of the rotation arm, or pay $500K for a pre-arby arm with more upside? You can always find 5th starters cheap if you need them. Braves got Harang for $1 million. Brewers will face decision on whether even to tender Estrada this winter. Why not look to see what he brings?
  8. Weeks is 2 for 22 with 10 K's since he peaked at .365 on May 15. I wouldn't get too carried away by his 3 week hot spell earlier. He's probably still no better than a .230/.310/.400 high strike out hitter when all is said and done.
  9. It's a bit early to start talking about pace, but Estrada is on pace to threaten Bert Blyleven's HR allowed season record of 50 and Estrada would do it in about 80 fewer innings. It's hard to see how he can hold on to his rotation spot if he keeps giving up HR's at this rate especially with Nelson pounding on the door. That can't help his trade value either.
  10. This season has yet to be defined in terms of what may ultimately cost them. In 2012 it was a bullpen that was historically bad especially in the first half. In 2013 it was injuries/suspensions that cost them the middle of the lineup along with putrid production on the right side of the infield in the first half combined with an ill timed pitching slump in May that led to worst month in franchise history. This year they've gotten two months into the season without a season defining weakness showing. For that we should all be pleased. Starting pitching has slumped again in May but not to the degree it did last year. If it rebounds later in June like it did last year, they could be in it all year.
  11. Davis appears to be a guy who's just plain streaky. I can live with that from the 6-7 hitter in the lineup if he slugs over .450 with 25 HR and 75 or so RBI out of the 6th or 7th spot. His production should mirror what Corey Hart gave them. I think defensively he's been better than advertised too. His arm is weak but it's not all that bad.
  12. Boras will want this year and two more. With Ramirez' contract ending, they are going to need a solid veteran bat in the middle of the lineup next year too. I'd go 3 years. It should be reasonable 3 for $25 million range. I think plan B is Morris replacing Overbay at some point. Doesn't look like Green is in their plans.
  13. Davis has picked it up considerably in the last week. No way they pull the plug on him now.
  14. Estrada is on pace to threaten the all time single season HR allowed record of 50 set by Bert Blyleven in 1986 in about 80 fewer innings. Blyleven logged 271 innings that year. Yeah he'd be of some use eating some innings out of the pen, but unless he starts keeping it in the park, not sure of his value either in trade or bullpen. He can be cruising along and then boom, without warning he'll give up one usually followed closely by another.
  15. Nelson served notice to Estrada that he can't follow up his May performance 5.16 ERA in 5 starts with similar numbers in June. That just won't cut it when the teams' number one prospect is ready. Garza and Gallardo are on long leashes but not Marco. Estrada has 4-5 starts to get it back together or he's either in the bullpen or another city. I don't think if the right deal came along they'd hesitate dealing Estrada either.
  16. Considering some of the quotes over the weekend, I'd say it's quite possible we'll see McGehee back in a Brewer uniform at some point. He was very well liked and the Brewers figure to have an opening at 3B in 2015.
  17. Morales? They can find a better 1B man than that with the farm system they have. Agree about keeping Nelson up. Release Weeks and trade for a good 2B/SS backup player. Start Gennett full time. The more he sees LHP the better he will get. Weeks is hurting his development. It's time to improve the bench and Melvin needs to wake up an do it and realize he doesn't have good backup options in the Brewers system. Morales is a proven, professional, MLB switch hitter with power. You can't say that about anyone in their system. He'll be available for no compensation in 2 weeks. Opportunities for playoffs don't come around every year for the Brewers. It behooves them to try and get him.
  18. Roenicke has always been an advocate of aggressive baserunning. It was still a boneheaded play by Gomez that may well have cost them the game. Sometimes a manager reaps what he sows.
  19. A number of possibilities are out there to be considered. Braun could be DL'd again. Of course Gallardo could end up on DL but that doesn't guaranty Nelson stays beyond the one start. Gorzelanny is close to being activated too and he could just replace Nelson and they could give Thornburg the 2nd start. I don't think they will DFA Overbay until Ramirez comes off the DL and more likely when it's clear whether or not they sign Morales. If no Morales, then it's Morris time. Problem with sending down Herrera is that both Gomez with his back and Braun are basically day to day. If they can get by (it was mentioned Gennett was taking some practice in the OF) then I suspect Herrera will be sent out. There's one logical pitching move that could be made of course, but no sense opening that discussion here.
  20. Heyman is reporting that Brewers have had scouts watching Morales work out at something called the Scott Boras Training Institute in Miami. Wouldn't Boras be better off having Morales sign with an indy league team and play his way into game shape there? Does Boras pay out of job ex minor league guys to pitch to his clients?
  21. Unless you are in a situation where one run is critical, you should always take the approach to try and cut off big innings. Big innings take you out of games. Play back and don't make a .250 hitter into a .350 hitter especially with a runner at 2nd too. Roenicke has a hard time with this concept as he's always content to play for one run at the expense of potential for big innings. Bunting early in games against a pitcher who's being knocked around pretty good just keeps the opponent in the game when you should be trying to knock them out of it. Oh if you execute (a big if sometimes) you get a run here and there and might build a 2-3 run lead, but that's not enough as we saw in the last 24 hours.
  22. One thing about Overbay that clouds reasoning. He's always had that sweet swing that some lefties possess. He still has it so when he makes contact you think, wow, what a nice stroke he puts on a ball. Plus he still uses the entire field. Gamel had that too to some extent. The problem is Overbay has always been susceptible to off speed stuff. As hard as Oswalt used to be able to throw back in his prime, he'd make Overbay look silly with his changeup. Now besides the off speed stuff, Overbay is a tick behind the really hard stuff. He'll still do damage to average fastballs and hanging sliders but pitchers like that are mainly down in AAA. Morris' numbers this year show some progress over last year. If they fail to sign Morales after the draft, I think we'll see Morris up here and he'll have more than half a season to show what he can do at least against mostly RH pitching.
  23. Think Roenicke was the first to pull a pitcher with nobody in the pen warming up? Na. Terry Bevington (one time a Brewer minor league manager) did that with the White Sox back in the 90's. Of course Bevington became a standing joke in the Chicago media and was basically run out of town for being a bad manager overall but that incident was always a focal point. Mention Bevington's name to any Sox fan and their eyes roll. Of course Milwaukee media will rally behind Roenicke. If RR did that in a big market, he'd be toast.
  24. Can you recall one time a training staff has been fined or suspended? No because teams don't put healthy players on the DL so they can circumvent the Rule 5 provisions.
  25. My bet is that Roenicke's thought process was when Laird got that fluke "double" putting runners at 2nd and 3rd, Roenicke thought "I need to turn around Doumit and get a strikeout" He plain forgot he hadn't gotten Smith up. Complete brain lock. That's my guess. Its the only possible explanation. Of course it's understandable as Roenicke has been very busy this week concentrating on how to best use his 12th pitcher.
