  1. Eh. Just a .698 career OPS against RHP so he doesn't fit the need for a lefty bat all that well. He's Kottaras without the power, a little better BA, and doesn't catch. I'd rather have Young for a year.
  2. Why not? Melvin said he was looking for someone with some closing experience. He and Roenicke have a great relationship. Old? Guys like Hawkins and Dotel keep finding jobs every year. K-Rod is a kid compared to them. I like that he was able to put the disaster that was most of 2012 behind him and be effective last year.
  3. Article in mlbtraderumors suggests that Kendrys Morales might still be out there after the draft. If that's the case, go ahead with the plan B guys, Francisco, Halton, Morris. If one of those emerges, great, If not go after Morales, when you can load most of his deal beyond 2014 after Ramirez and Weeks are off the books. Still also might be worth bringing in Young as a great swing guy in the IF.
  4. Santana would likely prefer to have a longer look than just a month of spring training hence a minor league deal with a June 1 opt out (as opposed to a very low non-guaranteed major league deal) makes more sense on both sides. He also wouldn't count on the 40 man and the Brewers would have that time to assess their current projected rotation. I'd prefer a Scott Baker myself on a similar deal.
  5. I wouldn't reject the idea of Morales out of hand. If you can get him well below market because he costs a draft pick, that might be a good investment in the long run. It might mean they have more dollars from greater fan interest to keep their own longer. He wouldn't turn a 75 win team into a contender, but they may now be an 85 win team when all is said and done, and adding a quality bat like Morales might add another 3 or 4 wins to that. Plus, he'll turn 31 in June and figures to have several more peak seasons in him. If all the dire predictions do come to pass, they can still build the farm system up by dealing off a Lohse, Ramirez, or a Gallardo at the deadline or by making a blockbuster involving a core player.
  6. I think the fans will dislike losing Thornburg a lot more than having to go with a Halton/Francisco or a Michael Young as the primary 1B option instead of someone like an Ike Davis. I don't see the Brewers "cracking" here. We're not talking about the next Cecil Cooper. If either Seattle or Texas signs Nelson Cruz, then it's quite possible a Justin Smoak or Mitch Moreland would become available and the Red Sox could find Carp expendable too.
  7. The Brewers are a combined 43-61 in April and May that last two seasons. Weeks contributed to those slow starts by hitting under .200 in that period both years (.158 in 2012 and .183 in 2013). Insanity is trying the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
  8. It's premature to speculate until he shows he's healthy enough to make 550 or so plate appearances and shows he's still a productive hitter. Both are pretty big ifs at this point and one reason bringing in a guy like Michael Young makes some sense. He could be a Brewer in 2015, but I wouldn't put money on it. As for who plays there in 2015, they'll likely have to look outside the organization. Chase Headley?
  9. Chris Narveson has signed with the Yakult Swallows for a reported $850K. That might be a good business decision, as he gets paid more than he would with a AAA contract and as we seen with McGhee, a good season over there can pay dividends and lead to a return to MLB. Good luck Chris!
  10. I think he was the first Brewer to hit for the cycle on Sept. 3, 1976. I still remember listening in my car when that happened. I was already out of state when he started broadcasting. He's one of a few that had two tenures with the Brewers. Another was Davey May who's also no longer with us. Off the top of my head, there also was Jim Slaton and Gorman Thomas back in the day.
  11. Colvin had some back issues last year that contributed to his bad year. If healthy, he's certainly worthy of a flier on a minor league deal. Yeah Coors helped his splits, but his road splits in 2012 were affected by playing a lot of games in the NL West pitcher's parks. A healthy Colvin (and that's an if) is certainly in the class of Ike Davis.
  12. How about Tyler Colvin on a minor league deal? He''s only 2 years removed from an .858 OPS in the major leagues. He's primarily an OF but he does have significant experience at 1B so even if he doesn't make the team he could play of in Nashville. He's been good in even years and awful in odd years.
  13. Making room for Michael Young perhaps? Melvin has a history of signings close to Christmas.
  14. Even the Michael Young of last year (.279/.335/.395) would not be a "black hole". True that's not the typical production you get out of that position. But Lucroy supplies 1B type production in the catcher's spot and what Young would be likely to produce would be perfectly fine for a catcher and wouldn't be all that bad for a 3B. Last year they went through Alex Gonzalez and his .194/.219/.226 at 1B, Yuni (.194/.220/.343 at 1B) and Francisco (.215/.294/.455 at 1B). Those 3 totaled 476 plate appearances while playing 1st. Now that's a black hole. Not only were they bad, all 3 saw significant time at 3B when Ramirez is out. Young wouldn't preclude them using a Morris or a Halton there if Young were needed more at 3B.
  15. 1. Release Rickie Weeks assuming he can't be traded 2. Explore extensions for Jean Segura and Wily Peralta 3. Draft a college 3B high 4. Don't assume you won't contend. Hold players accountable. 5. Continue to develop starting pitching
  16. That takes 712 quality AB's away from the Reds. Hamilton can't steal 1B (.308 OBP at AAA) and while his speed will help in the OF, he's still relatively knew to the position.
  17. If Francisco makes the opening day roster, his leash is going to be very short, especially if Morris gets off the a hot start. I don't get the anti Young sentiment myself. We're talking about a guy who's been a premier hitter. Yes he's slipped. But last year they started off the season with a just as old but nowhere near the hitter in Alex Gonzalez at 1B who was backed up by Yuni. Young's not a guy that can play 156 games like he did with Rangers in 2012, when his numbers slipped significantly. But 130 games at age 37? Why not? That little extra rest might boost his numbers to say .290/.335/.410. Who's he really blocking? Halton? I like Halton as much as anyone and think he'll have a role this year at some point, but I'm guessing over a full season, he'd hit .250/.300/.400. Not Yuni like, but not something to really get excited about either. The mentality of the Brewer brain trust is that 2011 and 2012 were sabotaged by slow starts. This team isn't a favorite, but it's not hopeless as far as contending either. But they can't be 10-15 under .500 again on June 1st either. They will have two first year regulars in Gennett and Davis. Adding a veteran bat with a limited downside could prevent a shaky start. If they are out of it in July, Young can and will probably be moved. One way or another, he's likely to finish the season on a contender.
  18. Another name to throw out there, though no rumors of any Brewer interest, is Wilson Betemit. Betemit is a switch hitter, and has career numbers of .267/.332/.442. He's played 80 games at 1B in his career. Missed most of last year with injury. He's much better hitter from the left side: .279/.347/.472. Just turned 32 and should come fairly cheap.
  19. If Young has a decent first half, teams will come calling for his services down the stretch. He's kind of that extra bat that teams look for to replace a struggling young player or fill in for an injured player. It could also turn out he brings a veteran presence such as Scott Rolen did in Cincinnati that helps this group gel into something more than people expect. The worst thing is for them to decide they now have a pure platoon at 1B. I would expect Halton to play everyday in a corner OF spot in Nashville if Young is signed and be the first call up if either Davis or Braun goes on the shelf. Then if the time comes and Young is dealt to a contender, Halton will slide into his spot. If Morris gets off to a hot start, then they should just jettison Francisco. Young would be essentially taking Betancourt's spot. If the Brewers can get 800 AB's from Ramirez and Young combined, that's a significant upgrade over the totals of Betancourt, Alex Gonzalez, Ramirez, and what Francisco gave them at 3B before he was moved over. Toss in 250-300 more this year than last for Braun, and there's certainly hope for this team.
  20. It's not intended to be a Hall of Fame or a Wall of Fame, a Walk of fame, or whatever. it's a Wall to honor the history of the franchise. What better way than to list guys who played significant time in a Brewer uniform. Good, bad or indifferent, they are part of the history of the team. At one time or another, those guys all connected with the fans. A young fan might see Sixto Lezcano's name up there and ask his grandfather about him and his grandad can relate to him about opening day 1980 or someone can ask me about Johnny Briggs, who's name I took as a handle here, and I can tell him about the night he blasted a pair of HR including a GS off Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan into the bullpen in RF of old County Stadium or went 6 for 6 in Cleveland. Why is everyone having such a hard time grasping the concept? I think it's great. Guys like Bill Travers should be remembered. At his peak for a brief time before shoulder injuries derailed him, Travers was on his way to a stellar career.
  21. Maybe you stopped watching Brewer games after August 16th last year? He hit his last HR on that date, and then proceeded to end the year 8 for 63 (.127) with 30 Ks. His defense was awful too.
  22. Sorry, missed that. Failed to check the transactions last night and this morning. Unfortunate. I can live with Young but only if he plays regularly (at least 5 games per week) instead of Francisco, and not in a strict platoon with him. Young is probably still capable of putting up Loney-type numbers, and if he does, he's a guy that can be easily moved to a contender if they fall out of contention.
  23. Eric Chavez makes a lot more sense to me. Chavez and Young are the same guy (though Chavez has been more productive recently) but one bats right and the other bats left. The Brewers need lefty bats more. Who would you rather see taken out of the 1B platoon, Francisco or Halton? On the other hand for those who insist Gennett needs to be platooned, Young is better option than Weeks.
  24. I hate Ron as much as the next guy buy Yuni's playing time was cut in Sept. Yuni started 10 games and got 52 PA, Halton started 11 games got 52 PA. Ron's job over the last couple months was more to maintain a good atmosphere in the clubhouse so that the team would at least put forth a solid effort game after game. He saw to it that every guy on the roster was seeing action, even those who knew they wouldn't be around next season. I thought in that regard he did an outstanding job and the team responded by playing quite well. The last thing he needed with all those rookies around was to have a few veterans sulking about playing time in the waning weeks of a losing season setting bad examples.
  25. I was/am a big Rickie fan but it is obvious that it is just the pure hate against Weeks for regressing so much in 2012 & 2013 from his 2009-2011 season form where he averaged .269/.357/.472. His dramatic fall off to a .222/.320/.384 in 2012 & 2013 because of...? His ankle injury in 2011? Dale Sveum leaving after 2011? His best bud Prince leaving after 2011? People just want him off the team period regardless if his presence would help the team. His presence hurt the team in 2013. They were better after he got hurt. There's little hope that after coming off another serious injury that he's going to reverse his slide and actually help the team.
